I do it so that it mixes up the game as much as possible. I usually play as a man then on the second play through a woman with different stats and strengths to see the differences.

Wait what? I was giving a possible reason why a woman would choice not to be a guy not the end all answer for it what's with the response?
Switched fonts, sorry, I thought you'd click on the idea that it was in a different voice.

Male-Male camaraderie tends to be based on sweeping insults to best friends, but if there's a woman there, it often gets toned right down. If there's a woman pretending to man, the sharpness of the language - like there - can catch someone out.

That wasn't meant as an insult towards you, just as an example of how guys online can talk to someone in a friendly way, despite it being offensive.
Ahh no problem then, I thought what you thought I was thinking and thought... yeah.

Most games the female character is the fast, agile one. That's what I like to play. I hate the real slow, super strong ones. And if it is a 3rd person game, why would I want to look at a male butt for the entire game?

If I can play as a green mean Orc in WoW, I guess I can handle roleplaying as a woman.
I don't feel like it breaks the inmersion at all. Besides, it adds more variety.

I don't always play women, but I do significantly more than men, only in MMOs usually though, and that's usually just down to animations and style. Males in MMO's always have huge shoulders with six packs even though they're fat, it's fucking ridiculous. Plus, some animations just plain suck, like male undeads in WoW. I prefer the skinny, upright female model that does backflips, not the hunchback male that can't even lift his sword. Also, some times for armor types, like in Aion the female armor was badass, even more so because they often had loose pieces which looked awesome with the physics.

I usually find them more aesthetically pleasing, not in a pervy way like I enjoy staring at pixel ass, but in armor, animations and non-stereotypicalness.

For me? I create characters. If the female gender seems to fit then.. so be it, it's fun either way seeing what happens when I throw my creations at new settings.

Well, except for Ti'anla. I made her after coming up with something unusually amazing in EVE's character creation and it seemed a waste just to loose the result.

Well there are two main sexes (a few in-betweens) and infinite genders. Some days you might lie closer to the opposite gender when you're creating a character. Or in some games (say Vindicticus) where you have only a limited number of characters to choose from and each of them have different play styles and these characters aren't all the same sex (Fiona is female, Lan is male, no leeway.)

RPGs will sometimes have different options depending on sex and occasionally I'm just in the mood for a character motif in my head that works better with the opposite sex.

well i know why some of my female friends play as guys is so they dont get hit on by lonely desprate guys.

i think the reason some guys play as girls is so they can con items or money off some other people (this only applies to online games) my brother plays Guild Wars and every time he makes a new player its always a girl, im still not sure why

wow. theres a lot of gamers out there to whom the protagonists ass is a crucial game element... there must be a way to tap into this demographic.

Didn't read the entire thread but isn't one of the earlier Resident Evil games you have no choice but to play as a female? Could be wrong about that one. I know Bayonnetta you play as a female. I think for some it's the whole looking at a female aspect; for others, it may fit the game play or mission (some games give female character better stats than males as far as speed and agility). I'm awaiting the FPS game (MW like) where players have a choice to be either gender for online play. I think AC:Brotherhood is the first to do something like this.

In your guys opinion what makes a good female protagonist? Im working on a story line for a female protagonist in one of my games, but i want her to be cool without her having to be a strip tease, so what do i do to make her perfect?

I always played as Judy Nails in Guitar Hero because she kicked ass. She was the best character, plain and simple.

What started out as random occurrence turned into a bizarre social experiment. I started playing WoW out of boredom, not really caring for anything about immersion, leaving the gender icon set to female. When my proper typing skills and excessive use of emoticons led people to believe I was actually a girl on the opposite side of the screen, I wondered to myself how long I'd be able to maintain the charade. Keeping my correct gender completely hidden, avoiding gender-specific pronouns, and continuing to type as I normally do (read: without resorting to any form of leet speak, the black plague that it is), I would say that I was successful. Added complications like blowing my mic port out (thus appearing in Vent but having a legitimate reason for never speaking) only aided matters.

Thus, for 4 years, people thought I was a woman. I can't say I'm proud of that.

Well, in the case of Fallout: New Vegas, I found it difficult to play as a selfish, bi-sexual cannibal when doing it as mister Ryan Tesla, as I couldn't help but project myself onto him, and since I'm not any of the above things, you might see how that could ruin my immersion of the game some, eh? So playing as a girl allowed me to be the above things without breaking immersion, also since I modded Cass's outfit to be playable miss Sarah Tesla's ass is positively divine whenever she wears it, and is quite pleasant to gawk at whenever she walks around in third person view, which is a nice plus. ;)
