I play as a guy in MMO's purely because of the sexist comments I get When I play as a woman, With console games I'm not fussed as to what gender I play.

Well, if I'm gonna spend the best part of 1000 hours staring at my character's arse, it may as well be something nice to look at.

Well in some games it's more practical, like in Fallout 3. In others, like Mass Effect, it gives a slightly different narrative/storyline.

And for some, like World of Warcraft, you can make in-game money with a female avatar.

I take no issue with playing as a female character, as long as she isn't wearing the proverbial "Battle Bikini".

If you're going to stare at a characters butt for 70+ hours, would you like that to be a woman's butt or a man's butt?

(is a girl)

The few times I've ventured into MMOs I tend to play as guys because they have decent clothes. It's not even just the revealing factor of my girl character going into battle in a bikini, there's also long bits of fabric hanging off which would be easy for an enemy to grab. Guys get pants.

In less purely functional terms, why not? In more structured games the gender roles are reversed all the time. A good example would be the silent protagonists since you get to make up their story and motivations as much as you do for MMO characters. Link, however pretty, is still a boy but I love playing as him and such.

As for guys choosing girl characters, maybe it's just a change of pace since most games have male main characters.

In Oblivion, there were multiple instances in which the main character lost all of her clothes. I also just so happened to make my character super hot. Really, if I'm going to be looking at a character for dozens of hours, why not make it something pleasing to the eye? I don't do it every time (In Fallout, you can't really see the character you made after a certain point). In Mass Effect, I was p-o'd that you couldn't have a lesbian relationship with any of the crew members.

I think that's the ultimate fantasy, for me anyway. I want to be beautiful and amazing like women, yet at the same time get to have sex with hot women as well. I don't enjoy looking at straight porn, because of how disgusting I find men to be anatomically. BEING a chick while being WITH a chick is the best thing ever. And that's why I like my avatars to be girls. Sometimes.

Funny you mention functionality. I know a married couple in an MMO who did just that. Wife played the burly Tank and husband played the female healer. Her excuse was the same as yours, and his excuse is the same as ours.

Funny this should come up. The other day I was playing KoF with a kid on the PS2, and for my team I intentionally went for the more well-endowed female fighters. The kid was so distracted, he could barely keep up heh heh heh!

I don't do much RPG so most of the time I'm dealing with having to play as the uber-clichéd Duke-Nukem-in-a-different-skin character. So while playing Mass Effect, I took Fem Shepard just for the sake of novelty. Turns out I was rewarded with better voice acting, more bearable facial animation and not someone anatomically over-done. Plus, more entertaining watching her manhandle men twice her size.

In fact, right now for me the only reason to be a man in an RPG will be if I can play as an average Japanese salary-man going mental and starts slaying demons.

But if I'm playing an MMO (which I never will), I'd definitely be a dude. Same with the rest of you guys. It's really not cool otherwise.

personally I play a female for the "Black widow" conversation options in Fallout, it gets hilarious at times, especially with Benny. That and i`ve spent most of my gaming life playing titanic space marines and army soldiers, so playing the sleek, sexy, and

sudden OT: female Shepperd and Williams are probably the only female characters that the developers did not make to look like strippers or lingerie models.

i did in Vampire the Masquerade,
mostly as a female vampire you can seduce not only guys but the girls as well.
so from a tactical perspective it meant i could talk my way into alot more places
and from a gameplay perspective, a bit of saphic flirtation is never a problem.
Infact, we never have too much saphic flirting in games

My friend always plays as female characters in Guild Wars and his argument is "if I am going to look at someone's ass for hours on end it may as well be a female one." As for me, well I am glad they at least have began adding female characters into games more often now because I generally feel more immersed in a game where I can be my gender. Though I can forgive Zelda (Link is kind of a tad girly anyway.)

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
My brother plays almost exclusively female characters, and I know he isn't alone. I honestly can't think of single good reason to, for me, all it would do is spoil the immersion as I'm NOT a girl. So, anyone who does play as a woman in games, why? Feel free to speculate even if you don't play a woman, but please try not to just descend into "COz ThEy ARe PerVS LoL!".

TLDR: Why do men play as women?
You know before you posted this thread the answer was already available from Extra Credits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits?page=1]; having already done two episodes explaining the importance of diversity in gaming and the benefits to be gained by playing roles you aren't.

No matter how much I disguise it, my answer will prbably boil down to that. I guess I also like to see if the gameplay changes at all.
This. With the games I play being so lobg these days it just makes sense to play as someone you like. It doesn't neccessarily break the immersion either...

1- Some people don't want to run around as a guy staring at a guys ass.

2- To play a game is to play something you are not, this I guess is the extra step

3- Why not.

4- The male model/voice is unappealing or poorly acted/done.

5- Some people want to be women, jus' saying.

I usually play female on my second time through. Mainly because I have a really annoying obsession in role-playing games to do things with all types of characters. Evil male, evil female, good male, good female, etc.
Though, it's also to see what changes.

Fable 3 is the only role-playing game so far I have only completed twice and stuck with my second character as my main. A female, if you must know. I find it more immersive somehow.

Seriously though, I have a female orc warrior in WoW that I love playing. She's neither pretty nor can I personally "relate" to the experience of a woman or an orc, but the point is that it's a role playing game....you're supposed to enjoy the experience of being someone you aren't, essentially.

I've had a female dark elf in Oblivion...Lara Croft in any of her games....Jill Valentine in RE, etc etc. the whole point of picking different characters other than yourself is the very definition of escapism, to project yourself in to the role of someone you decidedly aren't. If I limited myself to roles only I could relate to, I wouldn't be playing many video games since there very few that are about middle-aged, bald white accountants.

EDIT: I was playing female characters on and off in Dungeons & Dragons and other paper and pencil RPGs looooong before female characters had moved out of the 8-bit era, anyway. I suspect people who started in PnP RPGs might find the idea that role-playing is about projection in to something you aren't in real life to be a bit easier to understand, or at leats more comfortable with the idea.

This AGAIN? How many times is this going to be brought up? Look, guys who write books and screenplays and even video game scripts have to write the female parts, too. Guys who do the GMing chore in a tabletop RPG have to play females all the time to flesh the world out. What's the difference between those things and a guy playing a female in a video game? There's no difference, and no difference between that and any situation where a female creator/GM has to play or write male parts.

I would like to ask the people who keep bringing this up, or who are afraid of playing a member of the opposite sex: do you also refuse to read books where the protagonist is of the opposite sex? Or books written by a member of the opposite sex? Because I have to warn you guys: if you read an actual book where the hero is a lady, you might end up seeing her point of view on something, and - gasp! - find yourself imagining the situation. Which, would be just horrible, right? Because it might mean you ARE a girl!

Now, seriously, doesn't that sound stupid? Can we drop this now?

Because I can?

It offers new gameplay options, for instance, like in Mass Effect 2, I have a female Shepard renegade who has a relationship with Garrus, I also have a male paragon but there's something awesome about a badass red head who teams up really well with Garrus.

It also depends on appearance. In Oblivion, I have a female moon shadow elf with a white bob haircut and red eyes. She also wears a female version of Ezio's armour from AC2. Now tell me that's not awesome...
That does sound awesome. Sounds exactly like my character in Oblivion. She was one of my favorites nex to the character I made for Saints Row 2: Dr Girlfriend (voice and all).

I too prefer to play a female character but I would have to say it's mostly for the aesthetics: If I'm going to be looking at the this person for several hours, I'd rather be looking at a shapely female form.

I've often said San Andreas would've been so much more fun (and would've made more sense) if you played as Catlina. She was crazy.
