They can try. But they aren't invincible or untraceable. If they annoy enough people, they will eventually be caught - someone will tip off the police to collect a nice bag of reward money.

They seem to be a bunch of twats that want attention.
I suspect that they will be traced and captured like the rats they are.

Ive not really been keeping up with this sort of thing, what is it that these hackers have against sony, when i read other news items it sounded as though they were making these attacks to prove some sort of point..although they could well blank personal details and still sell them on somewhere..

Personally ive taken nothing but good memories from the ps1 and two, surely sony hasnt managed to drop the ball with their current gen console?

The original attacks against Sony were a reaction to the company suing hacker George Hotz and Sony's out of court settlement with Hotz doesn't seem to have let it off the hook.
Of course it didn't; they didn't budge an inch on their "what's yours is mine" policy.
That policy was in the ToS, even before OtherOS was removed.

Basically, if you don't like it, then you shouldn't have bought the PS3 in the first place.

Besides, the PS3 is a gaming system. Made to play games. So as long as you can use it for that, then whatever.
I thought the PS3 was "multimedia home entertainment system" or something, which is why it was totally OK for it to be so expensive at launch.

But that's just Sony marketing fluff, so let's never mind that.

On the other hand, Sony ToS is gospel.
It can also play blu-ray disks. Video games and movies. That's two different facets of media, making it multimedia.

And...yes. Yes it is. Terms of Service are just that. If you want to use the service, then you need to abide by the terms.
It's not a service, it's a product. A physical item.

If the maker of my toaster tells me he doesn't want me toasting bagels they can go to hell.
That's right. The PS3 is a product. PSN on the other hand, is a service.

If you modify your PS3 (Thus breaking the ToS), they don't send SWAT to break into your house and repossess the PS3 because it's been modded. They just don't let you go online with it and void the warranty. You didn't abide by the terms that they set, so they removed the service.
Wrong.

Modding the PS3 to retain the OtherOS capability it came with has nothing to do with using PSN, but to use PSN you must have the update which disables OtherOS. And Geohot wasn't sued for anything about PSN.
They removed OtherOS because it was a major security risk. And, that's what I said. If you mod it to use OtherOS, you can't use PSN (Because of said update). PSN is the service. They don't make your PS3 explode if you try to mod it.

Geohotz was sued because he published an encryption key and software tools on his website to allow Playstation owners to gain complete control of their consoles from the firmware on up. And...noone brought up Geohotz until you did just now. So...I don't get what he has to do with it.

As far as I know, the only thing that happens to you if you mod the PS3 is that you can't use PSN and the warranty is voided. Like I said, Sony isn't going to send SWAT to go take the PS3 back from you. You own the product, which in this case is a plastic box with science wizardry going on inside of it. They own the network, which is a service.

and... these guys win the prodigious "Deserving of an Internet Slap" award congratulations...

But really? Why? at first these attacks could have been "ooo evil corporation! must destroy!" now it's just turned into "What twats do when there isn't a new Call of Duty"

Tsch, haven't they heard? The end of Sony has been prolonged to October, scheduled together with humanity.

I'm hoping someone can enlighten me with some Cliff's Notes here but what is the purpose of all this? I only recently got a PS3 so I've only just started being interested in Sony and Playstation news; essentially, I'm just out of the loop. What do these hackers hope to accomplish by 'destroying' Sony?

Who benefits from this? Who? WHO THE FUCK WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS? WHO ASKED THEM TO DO THIS?

Why? Noone will come out feeling better! WHY? Why do this kind of people even exist? So they can wave their electronic schlong in my face and say 'look what I can do to you'?

I know how to blow your house up with soap! DOES THAT GIVE ME THE RIGHT TO DO IT?

Stupid, stupid, stupid...

Seriously. If these guys want a list of noble causes and evil people that need wrongs doing to them, I can provide a list in about a minute. Sony wouldn't be at the top by any means. Perhaps they should refocus their energy where it matters? This seems disproportionate to put it mildly.
