Hackers Hit Steam Forums

The Steam user forums were hacked last night.

Wondering what happened to the Steam user forums? They were reportedly hacked last night by someone claiming to be from cheating/hacking site Fkn0wned.com. Text was inserted into the Steam forum header and other places advising users to check out the site for undetectable cheats, as well as hacking tutorials and tools, porn and the rest of the usual. Valve reacted quickly to the incident, taking the forums offline completely, where they remain as of this writing.

But in a fun twist, Fkn0wned denied that it had anything to do with the mess and actually ended up taking its own forum down for awhile following the Steam blowup, although they've since been restored. "Fkn0wned Forum is currently unavailable In lights of someone crediting us for the recent breaches of steam forums, the board is offline," a message posted on the site said. "Fkn0wned is not responsible."

Valve hasn't said anything about the matter yet, which optimists might take as a sign that there's nothing to worry about; but Sony took awhile to speak up about the PlayStation Network breach too and we all know how that worked out. I'm not suggesting that this is anywhere near the scope of that, but a change of password might be in order anyway.

Hackers should be targeting other countries, unless there is something wrong with America, Oh wait there is! Attack the 1% :)

Or continue with naive unbias journalism to entertain the unaware ants.

Indeed, but remember not all "Hackers" are these people hell bent on causeing problems online. Some actually do some awesome things with technology.

I know it's wrong what they did but it could of been worse.

Steam has a forum?
Ha, Ha! Exactly this. I never go on Steam forums, not even for troubleshooting and support. Their choice of blackish gray background annoys the hell out of my eyes. Good thing I didn't give Steam my credit card info since I purchase via PayPal.

EDIT:
Hmm, I guess the steam forum accounts and the Steam accounts are different.
At least I think it is...
If so, I have nothing to worry about!

Still, that sucks. Hope no information was stolen or anything like that.

I can't imagine this doesn't lead to more. One hacker exploits a ***** in the armor and more will come to pick at it.

You know what they say, any publicity is good publicity, whoever did this thrust the forum (which I've never heard of before) into the limelight, I wouldn't be surprised if the benefits of that attention out-weight any departures from outraged Steam fans.

Yeah I know I should say I hate hackers who use their skills for malicious purposes.

does that make this the fourth (officially 3rd) hack this year of gaming companies (twice for PSN and unofficially XBL)?

It should be noted that unless you're a complete dolt, your Steam account and your Steam forum account is not the same thing.

My only question is if the Steam account is automatically tied to the Steam forums? *Answered

As for the rest it's probably better to wait for more information before jumping to conclusions.

Not really worried, forums getting hacked is one thing, accounts getting hacked completely another.

The the accounts on the Steam forums and the digital distribution platform Steam aren't the same, it doesn't matter for Steam whether the hackers got the passwords on the forums or not.

OT: I was already wondering why I couldn't access the forums today. Maybe it's time to change from vBulletin.

Edit:

No, they're two separate accounts.
