My only question is if the Steam account is automatically tied to the Steam forums?
As for the rest it's probably better to wait for more information before jumping to conclusions.
Both are separate. Need to sign up separately for the forums so it's not tied to your main Steam account.

No, but 99% would use the same name/password.

OT: Well that's a *****. I wouldn't worry though. Unlike Sony, I'm sure Valve knows what they're doing.

Alright, if it's true that they aren't responsible, who is their sort of rival? Anyone against them could hack it, and try to blame them.

OT: Crap. Well, I used a different password there.

Ok, thanks

I dunno, that seems like a pretty obvious lack of security, I'd hope more than 99% aren't that naive.

Damn-near everyone uses one password for everything. Plus, is it really much of a stretch for people to use their Steam name/password for the Steam forums?

Of course not, but if I just look at it from my point of view, Steam is one of very few accounts that have a CC attached to it, and while Steam has excellent security I'm sure the forums don't. I'd hope that most at least have 2 passwords, and it would make sense to separate those for sites connected to each other. It's very possible more than 90% would do it, but I hope it's not 99.

Anywho, I don't get why hackers hack stuff like this. I mean honestly, what would you gain from hacking steam's forums? I guess some people have a just lil' to much spare time on their hands :p

Why do people give a shit about this? It's a god damn vbulletin board. They get hacked all the time. It is totally separate from your Steam account.

Is it a fucking slow news day or something? Is everyone just too uncreative to find a decent story at this hour? I just don't get it. Why report on a vbulletin getting hacked? It's fucking pointless.

The same thing happened to the Bethesda forums a while back, and everyone already doesn't give a shit about that.
Somebody is a Mr Grump today.

It's certainly news worthy, but anybody with a brain wont be freaking out about it.

Not only are Steam Forum Accounts separate from Steam Accounts, most people are using Steam Guard, so they would have to get your email account too. Unless you have the same Username/Password for all three, in which case you probably deserve to lose what you lose.

Here we go again, I hate hackers :(
Indeed, but remember not all "Hackers" are these people hell bent on causeing problems online. Some actually do some awesome things with technology.

I know it's wrong what they did but it could of been worse.
True, but look at all the hate GeoHot got for the horrible "crime" of jailbreaking the PS3. The man should be hailed as a hero by anyone who likes having full access to the hardware they paid for, but instead, even the people he directly benefited hate him.

OT: I did some research on this earlier. The hackers probably didn't do much more than screw up the front page, and if they did get any information, your passwords should be safe, since Vbulletin (which is what the Steam Forums are based on) does a good job of encrypting the passwords. They've probably got your e-mail address, though.

I've never ventured onto the Steam forums so my reaction is 'meh'.
If you ever want to see true Steam hate, there's the place.

Occasionally useful, but always full of bile.
Yeah, I think ive only posted once or twice since I created a forums account for steam. Barely used it. I still changed my password just to be on the safe side though.

I didn't join the forums so it seems I would be safe... right?
Yes, actually. The forum account is completely separate from the main Steam account. I learned this the hard way when I had a tech support question to ask, and I had to make an account and then wait for them to approve it because my e-mail address was from Yahoo.

you know, one day hackers are going to piss some corporation off so bad that they will back track them and send hit men after them to teach them not to fuck around with peoples personal property.

fucking hackers and DDOSers are the reason people want the internet under government control.
