Now, could they crash Steam itself if they wanted to?
This is one of the many reasons I don't like the idea of linking up online to play games locally.
Separate entity, which I would imagine is managed a lot differently seeing what it holds.
This was just a forum being hacked. Apparently this happens quite often according to some people. Unless you use the same handle and password for your main Steam account(if you do, slap yourself upside the head and get it changed), you have nothing to worry about.
Besides, by all appearances they only went in to post some inflammatory bs. I doubt they had the interest or the time to get to accounts before Valve shut the forums down.

If you do have a forum account, I would give Valve time to get it straightened out and back online, and then wait a bit longer as it is going to be lagged beyond belief of everyone going on to post their reaction on the forum of the forum being hacked. After that, change your password.

Anonymous hackers fucked up the STEAM forums?

What asshats. Never heard of Fkn0wned before. They are getting some free adverts out this tho.
I don't know why you're angry, it's not like anyone uses that place except for searching for fixes and save locations.

It's not like I cursed out their family and wished cancer on them...

It's a shit head move to shut down forums people use for constructive purposes. Some people that download games from STEAM require the tech assistance from those forums on installing and running games properly. What's the point in bringing that down??
But they didn't. They added a message up the top. Valve took the site down. If support was taken down as well, sure that's a dick move. But just the forums? Not too big a deal.

Anywho, I don't get why hackers hack stuff like this. I mean honestly, what would you gain from hacking steam's forums? I guess some people have a just lil' to much spare time on their hands :p
Maybe the hack is a means of drawing attention to a security issue that encourages the owner to fix in a timely order? There's precedent for some companies to attempt suing/investigating anyone that reports security concerns, instead of actually fixing the code.

They've probably got your e-mail address, though.

Hm. I'm trying to log into steam to change my password just in case (I don't even know if I used the forums, and the steam service has my old card info anyway), but it says it's having trouble connecting. Anyone else?
Probably a greater concern to check that your e-mail account password is up to scratch.

What was the accomplishment except pissing off Valve employees and users? It's pathetic, absolutely childish and pathetic.

And delayed me selling my Unusual hat in TF2 for monehz.

I don't know how to feel about this.
Valve has it coming, but people shouldn't resort to this, and hardworking innocents may or may not be financially harmed by this.

My advice would be to go to the sourceop forum if you aren't already. That's where most unusual buying/selling happens anyways.

Though, as someone who does a lot of trading, I do have to say this sucks. On top of the implications this has, I'm sitting on a bunch of items I can't really move because the Steam forum is (unfortunantly) the best site for trading at the moment as far as I know. I was hoping to trade for a copy of MW3 before it was released or Rage now that it's on sale. Just have to hope it's back up by Tuesday.
