I have a hairy chest. And I have the same problem with friends, or, should I say, a single friend in particular who keeps telling me to shave it off. Could just be me, but I'm finding people are becoming way too self conscious. Bothers me to no end. Ugh.

The only reason you have to shave it is the opinion of others. As long as no-one whose opinion particularly matters to you (boyfriend or girlfriend) dislikes it, what's the problem? Personally, my wife seems to like my hairy chest.

I'm half bear, so I'll let you in on a little secret.

DON'T shave it.

Apart from from your whole body becoming 20 degrees colder (or it will feel like it), wait 2 days...then the stubble hits. Remember having chicken pox? That will seem like light relief.
This right here is the main reason why men should never shave their chests.

And even if having a home-grown angora sweater might be off putting to some people, DON'T SHAVE. The more hair you have, the more horrible it'll feel after you've shaved it off.

I've got some decent fuzz myself, though nothing I'd call a rug.

Blech, I find hairy chests to be nasty.
Amen to that. Each to their own and all that, but the sight of a hairy chest -- especially when somebody is showing it off with an unbuttoned shirt -- is one of the biggest turn-offs I've ever personally experienced. On a side note, your avatar is incredibly hypnotic.

If she has a chest rug then I'm confused, scared, emotionally scarred and impotent after seeing it.

Joke aside, I like to have mine trimmed.

Girls... imagine this: shaved chest+shaved groin area= sandpaper sex :p
there is a thing called waxing.
and it's not that bad.
There's a thing called stupidity too, putting one's self through needless pain for a concept is... well basically masochism (I get that some people like surfers ,and people who have to shave because of a hobby or even their job, are forced to do it to either keep doing what they enjoy or their job) and that is never good. I would like to quote one of my ex-girlfriends here "I want a man, not a flat chested girl with a dick." .
It is stupid for girls to have to do it for guys to like them?
women in the west spend billions just to be hairless from the neck down for men to accept them.
you can not even tell me without lying that you would accept a girl who had never shaved her under arms or had the look of a wig in her underwear. No! but you expect women to just accept you as you are with just letting everything go free. you would say that girl needs to learn to not let it go au natural and take care of herself and then look for a girl who has the appearance of a twelve year old below the belt.

If women have to so much maintaning then it would not hurt for a guy to grow a pair and be willing to get a manicure or even not make their junk just look like a bush with a tree trunk. but heaven forbid you get called a pussy because you take care of yourself!

Also is your ex girlfriend looking to get some action from a caveman?
we are evolving to have less bosy hair because we do not have such a need for it anymore. It shows your just higher up on the evolutionary chain.
One of the smartest men I know lets his hair and his beard grow long, he just can't be arsed to waste time on it while there is other shit to do (the dude is my Quantum Mechanics teacher and is looking to know as much as he can about life and the world in general).

That ex of mine was of the opinion (never got into a real discussion with her on the subject and it only came up in passing so don't ask for why, how and where) that men should be hairy and girls to keep certain areas either shaved or trimmed. Honestly I wouldn't mind a woman with hair on her and I equally wouldn't mind one that shaves everything except her head (or even that but I gotta ask the reason then) because I don't bother with looks as far as "hair/no hair" goes, I only take notice of certain things which pertain to one's personality (for girls I'd have to say excessive body weight coupled with excessive eating or the opposite as it speaks to the personality of that girl, for guys it has to be shaving everything south of the neck... I have yet to meet one guy that shaved his hair off , who wasn't a surfer, model, or such that he needed to shave his hair off, that wasn't a complete douche).

As far as your "evolutionary" argument I have this to say: if mother nature wanted us hairless we would be so stfu and stop imposing your own views on others on the basis that "only cavemen have hair" cause I could just as easily go "so you wanna become asexual?"

Don't shave it. Shaving your chest has got to be the most uncomfortable thing in the world. Believe me, I know.

I, too, have been the proud owner of a hairy chest since I was about fifteen. Girls have always loved it. The one woman I know who hates hairy chests on guys has never had a romantic interest in me anyway, and her boyfriend is frankly a beanpole with no manly hair whatsoever. I don't know how he keeps warm at night living up on the hill like they do.

Meanwhile, women have run their searching fingers through my manly chest jungle countless times and I couldn't be happier about it. For my money, the kind of woman who loves a hairy chest is frankly going to be dynamite in bed, probably because the chest kicks up their hormone production more.

Now, the hair that showed up on my shoulders around age 30? That I could do without. But my wife doesn't mind, so all is well.

I don't have chest hair. Besides, body hair creeps the hell out of my lover, a lot of girls that I know, and myself.

Also: I guffaw at your masculinity; you'll never be as great as Gaston.

I dont like any hair on my body. As soon as i can afford an Epilator its all getting plucked. Chest, arms, legs, the lot.

It sucks that at age 17 i have hair at the bottom of my back and randomly sprouting ones across my shoulders. I guess im cursed.

I dont mind if other guys have it though. Depending on their person it can make them very sexy.

Hairy chests in general I have no problem with. Mine's still at that awkward stage of growing tufts, so it looks like I glued on bits of lint. =|
Thus, I shave it regularly.

Body hair allows for a greater amount of bacteria and perspiration to remain on your body. As long as that's taken care of, do what you want.

Personally, I find it horrible to ask or expect anyone to shave their body hair. I'm no fan of seeing fur boots on women in July, but seriously, I shaved the hair on my chest ONCE at someone's request. The ingrown hairs, the INSANE itching... it's just not worth it.

My boyfriend doesn't have chest hair...which is nice, because I'm not a huge fan of it.

Also, while I don't mind beards, I hate being beard-raped. Guys, PLEASE, don't ever rub your stubble on a girl's face, because it is HORRIBLE.

But, then, I don't shave my legs all that often. Oddly enough, the only people who give me a hard time about it are my sister and mother.

That's why smart men shave against the grain when there's going to be fun times!

I am the owner of a hairy chest, I don't really have strong feelings about it one way or the other but I do find really hairy chests a bit disturbing.

I'd say I rate Hugh Jackman [http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/12/19/article-1097851-02D938FF000005DC-539_306x423.jpg] on the chest hair scale.

*Shrug* Whatever, really.

My boyfriend likes the hair, he has a goatee and moustasche and everything, and I let him have his fun, because it honestly doesn't matter in the least to me.

Of course, everyone doesn't fit in it.
