So what? It just means some pirate gets disappointed with another lackluster title before the people who pay for it. The only difference is someone other than the game's developers will know it's uninspired and can look down on the buyers beforehand.

Why can't they just be honest? Is it so hard to say "we want your money so don't d/l the leaks"? Instead they feed us this "piracy is evil, you won't experience the real game if you play a leak" nonsense. We all know by now some people will never buy the game, leak or not, and it's better to ignore those people and after all, they might love the game and spread the news to prospective purchasers.

Microsoft as a business probably doesn't care terribly much, as you said they'll still cash in on this either way.
However this does cause them to loose face in general, it shows they're susceptible to such leaks.
The ones who are probably most disapointed with the leak would be the makers who for the last three+ years have poured their efforts into making the game, their glorious unveiling has now been rather tarnished.

A bit like if a famous artist spent three years painting something in secrecy, then a month before it's finished someone sneaks in and snaps a shot of it.
Everyone who's interested will see this unfinished piece of work and judge it as the final product; in addition it will prematurely burn public interest, so by the time the actual piece is unveiled, most will say 'yeah we saw that a month ago' and not be interested.

TLDR: it's not always about the money.

to be fair this is a gold disk, unlike PC digital xbox has to press teh final game over a month before release to ensure it gets to the stores on time.

if it was digital only you would be right, most of those only gold master the week before release and then work on a day 1 patch.

the funnist part is how console is coming full circle and becoming more like PC every week, now game release unfinished and are patched, you have to install them, there is more and more DRM and account locking. it makes me sad

I never have/will invest in anything Halo except Arby n' the Chief/RvB, but even I think this is a raw deal if true. These new guys have repeatedly expressed their care in trying to craft something that will live up to Bungie's reputation. If sales don't at least match Reach they'll probably get canned by Microsoft, and now their proverbial thunder is being stolen before they're even close to being finished.

Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach all were leaked before their release dates in (if sources are correct) fairly similar situations, so 343 shouldn't be worried or affected.

It's Halo 4: It will sell like hotcakes even if it says on the box that it is now a platformering RPG with racing elements.
