Is there even a doubt? It's IWBTG, or I Wanna Be The Guy, as it stands for.

I tried to play it through once. I spent a whole year, and didn't get to the end. I did however, die over 5 thousand times. FIVE. THOUSAND.
Yes, it's that hard. I mean, everything kills you. Even apples (which sometimes have the habit of falling UPWARDS). It's just ungodly difficult. Super Meat Boy is a walk in the park in comparison (I only died 700 times playing that game).

Here's a video (this guy must be God, by the way)

Edit: Take a look at the 4:30 mark. See those tetris blocks? You've gotta memorize where they land to survive. And just getting to the tetris blocks took me at least 10-20 tries.

I was gonna say Brutal Legend- a game that, unless you enter anything except the Mint 500 in the turn of the century Drag-u-la- just hates gamers.

That is, until I watched some of these I Wanna be the Guy videos; I concede defeat, and wholeheartedly change my vote.

As far as the hardest game ever goes, I'd have no idea, but the ones I struggled with most are Commandos, the first Homeworld and Demon's Souls.

Marathon 2: Durandal on the hardest difficulty will beat you down until the final battle. At that point just stop playing. It's impossible.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin (Genesis)- Only four levels but boy were they long. I tried playing this game legit, but often failed to get past the second stage without an action replay.

Chulip (PS2) - Proof that not every hard game has to have very intense battles or near invincible bosses to beat. This obscure bizarre Japanese kissing game (yes I said kissing game) had some of the toughest most obscure puzzles you will ever encounter. Think you could not be stumped? For example who would have guessed that to win over an owner at a bath house that you had to take a bath at night in a very specific order (i.e. remove clothes, wash hands, take bath, wipe feet on mat, and about five or six other things I had to do) with no slip ups in order to win him over? Or how about learning that in order to win over an irate person sitting on a bench that you had to walk past him around fifty times? What? No hints or clues? No problem in figuring that one out. Oh and just in case you worried that there were no cheap deaths aplenty in this game, then you need not worry. You will die often when you usually fuck up a puzzle or just run into some one who is angry (90% of the time) and they retaliate by flat out clobbering you to death. Yeah!!

Please Note: Of course I know that there was a FAQ included with Chulip that pretty much solved most of the tougher puzzles , but I assume most people were not complete pussies and cracked it open on day one since it also spoiled much of the game's fun when you were not exactly pulling your hair out in total frustration.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

It makes Super Meat Boy look like a a walk in the park. Seriously TR:A is fucking painfully hard, unforgiving and convoluted.

...What? Did you have a pirated copy that ruined the ledge-jumping or something? I had no issues with it at all... Seriously, I'm very interested in why you found it impossible.
Got my copy off Steam thank you very much.

Two words.

Fuck. Egypt.

Seriously, the Great Pyramid had me set down my controller and just not come back to the game for a week.

Anniversary managed to be even more difficult than the original and going from TR:A to TR:L is like jumping from IWBTG to "You have to burn the rope."

Not to mention those Relics were damn hard to find in places and the added complexity those added to the area design could make some of the levels quite confusing.

I beat Super Meat Boy in three days, 100% Light and Dark. I can speed run Ninja Gaiden. I am not unfamiliar with difficult games or mastering them and TR:A was one of the hardest I have ever played. Great game, fun, beautiful, amazing puzzles and environments. I have played and beaten all 9 Tomb Raider Games and Anniversary is without a shadow of a doubt the most difficult of the bunch for its puzzles and level layout, especially for Time Trials.
No offense meant, sorry.

And... um... this post utterly baffles me. I'm positive you're serious, but now I feel a bit godly for doing the entire game in two days. Huh. (Incidentally, I got Super Meat Boy a week ago, I'm still trapped in the damn Salt Factory.)

I wanna be the guy, You only live once, and of course a proper answer thats not a tiny browser game, Demon's Souls. I think i broke the death-per-hour world record on that nightmare.

The hardest games I've seriously played are Demon's Souls and Ninja Gaiden. The hardest game overall?

Super Mario Forever?

4 minutes and 33 seconds is up there. it's a full PVP MMO, and if anyone is playing other than you, you lose.
Why did I fall for your lies...why?
liieess? me? no no no. it was just some simple embellishment, right? it's all true, the game is player vrs player, multiple people can log on (even if that means they both lose >.>), and if 2+ people are playing, they lose. where did i lie? :p

Everything mentioned so far pales before the far, far more unforgiving I Wanna Be The Guy. Which has an even harder fangame made from it.

Go ahead. Play it. It's a free download. If you make it to the first boss before giving up, you're gaming gonads are bigger than mine.

It's a free download. What do you have to lose besides your keyboard when you HULK SMASH it.
Already mentioned it. That means I Wanna Be The Guy is harder than I Wanna Be The Guy.

...My head asploded.
That's how hard it is.
OT: Real quick, this isn't a second time, I've lost count of the amount of times. Granted, there hasn't been one in a while that I've seen. Anyway, gonna also have to say IWBTG. I know it's mostly artificial difficulty, it hates you with a passion in the meanest way possible, but that's why it's hilarious.
