good thing for me that the unusual things that I like are just unusual and perhaps weird and not illegal. Very fortunate indeed. if I just happened to like bestiality/child porn, I'd be screwed even though it's not my fault.

I'm sure he had a perfectly good reason. He was probably holding it for a friend, common mistake.

About that... An Australian man has been convicted of possessing compromising images on his computer - of Bart & Lisa Simpson. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87960-Simpsons-Sex-Scandal]

"I don't want it to be illegal! Therefore it isn't! That's the way it works!" - Real life vs the internet,
quoted for truth.

This does seem over excessive and there is a difference between real life and pixels but unfortunately all it takes is one person or one conviction (as what happened with computer games) and it's all in the pot.

Thank the gods I do not live on the North American continent nor have anything "obscene" in that sense on my hard drive.

Next: "Man arrested and facing 30 years of jail time for drawing a picture depicting himself punching another man in the face."

It's a little scary, to be honest....

How much do you wanna bet there's gonna be at least one person who shuffles through their manga collection and/or destroys some of it after reading this thread?
On a completely unrelated topic...
My friend wants to know how do you completely destroy all the data on a hard drive?
Thermite.

Only way to be sure.

Wow. His prosecutors must not be very familiar with the internet...
While I fully believe there's no harm in shaming the guy--hentai is disgusting--five and a half years of jail time/counseling/probation for owning what amounts to cartoon porn is ludicrous. Seriously, you can beat someone up and steal their wallet and get away with less. Doesn't the justice department have more important things to worry about?

What the fuck? Ok, sure. It's a little weird that he possesses Hentai involving minors. But $250K and 15 years in jail is far too harsh. Sure, he had images, but they were just drawings! I may not know much, but I don't think actual children are sexually exploited in the making of drawings. If the guy stalked and molested children, I could understand. But this is just ridiculous.

Because I love playing devils advocate. You all jump right on board to say let him read or watch whatever he wants. It's wrong, but it's his life. But think from a psychological standpoint. What is to say that he reads this stuff and then suddenly tries to act on what he has read or viewed. I know this is a wide gateway and that we could say that about anything. But if he did act on those feelings and raped your little sister or daughter, would you feel the same way? Again, devils advocate, but think about it. I'm still totally against the government, but this is how people tend to think. Speaking from the perspective of one who's father is in prison for molesting my sister.

While I realise it's not actual child pornography I still think it's pretty much the same premise and therefore disgusting. Hefty punishment though. :(

Poor bastard. Life's ruined because of a guy going through his mail.Wait, that seems kinda shady, though. What if he had money in there instead of porn?

Wow, he's lucky they found his porn and not his life savings.

Although this stuff is a little sickening, there wasn't a victim or anything. And the definition of child pornography is about as clear as mud. This was a much harsher sentence than it should have been. especially considering the stuff people get away with.

To think if he had actually been a pedophile he would have only gotten like 3 years and some community service.

For all of you Canadians out there saying "thank god I don't live in America": our laws are even more retarded.

Also, this is just like saying video games depicting violence is murder and punishable as that.

Again, it's a wide gateway, and there have been cases....very few, but nonetheless cases of videogames having adverse effects on peoples minds in which a condition is created to cause them to act irrationally based on that experience. This is also true for many different media mediums. And while you may be sure, it doesn't mean it couldn't happen. That would be like me saying that because I own a gun, I would never shoot someone. While I believe in my words, if I read the news and found out that china was going to invade and kill my family, I would be much more prone to using said gun to defend myself.
Of course most violence related to video games has also been due to the fact that a pre-existing mental condition was in place.
