But...They're cartoons! If I where to draw Bart Simpson naked would that make me a Pedophile?

Sure he's a disgusting pervert, but he hasn't hurt anyone in anyway.

Because I love playing devils advocate. You all jump right on board to say let him read or watch whatever he wants. It's wrong, but it's his life. But think from a psychological standpoint. What is to say that he reads this stuff and then suddenly tries to act on what he has read or viewed. I know this is a wide gateway and that we could say that about anything. But if he did act on those feelings and raped your little sister or daughter, would you feel the same way? Again, devils advocate, but think about it. I'm still totally against the government, but this is how people tend to think. Speaking from the perspective of one who's father is in prison for molesting my sister.
I doubt he would, but for the sake of this argument let's just say he might .. since when do we start arresting people because of what ifs ? Should we also arrest all gamers because they might try to kill someone in real life, or for that matter anyone that has read a book or watched a movie in his life because they might try to replicate what they read/see ?

Guess what ? .. if we would do that we'd all be in jail :p

That's not right. That's a horrible misjustice.

There is not a singly tiny justification for putting that guy in jail for any length of time.

What we have here is an example of unjustice

Again, I'm not saying that I agree....just that this is how the government works. And there are a lot of people that get arrested or put in jail every day for "what ifs". I totally think that the punishment is unjust...the worst they should have done was hire a couple of guys that think he's a pervert to sneak into his house in the middle of the night with socks full of soap and beat the crap out of him while he slept.

Even though it's locked now, a friend of mine (lordlee) already talked about this. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.174941-Hentai-Collector-Jailed]
My opinions on the matter are in that thread, but to give a basic summary, I don't think he should have been arrested as this isn't actual child porn.

Fuck that. They're arresting him for violating a subjective opinion of theirs. It is his right to own cartoons that depict anything at all, for they aren't actual child pornography. The whole point is that possessing child porn implies support of an industry that abuses children, but hentai does none of that. That whole court should be ashamed of themselves. They arrested him because they have different "tastes," while there was no actual crime committed.

We must be entitled to our own thoughts, opinions, and predilections if we are to live in a free country. As much as people find child sex disagreeable, as I do, that collector has a right to own "obscene" material.

I hate the movie "The Happening," but I'd be out of my mind to use this to justify an arrest of someone who owns it.

Nah, I don't have any of that type of porn, child and bestiality? That's sick, but, seriously, it's just pictures, there are thousands of these things on the internet, I can't believe they destroyed someone's life for that.
ARREST THE INTERNET.

Seriously, this is ridiculous; it's art, not real.

I was kinda on the fence about this, but I've finally come to a conclusion.
Criminal charges should not be filed, as there is no victim involved.
However, the items should be confiscated and he should be given psychiatric help. Hentai is porn, in this case porn of children. If that's what he is sexually aroused by (this being the purpose of porn) then he is in some part a paedophile. This doesn't mean he'll go out and molest children, but it wouldn't hurt to take preventative measures just in case.
Heck, if we did this with the easy to catch hentai importers, it might even give some insight into how to help fully blown paedophiles instead of scaring them into hiding.

For all of you Canadians out there saying "thank god I don't live in America": our laws are even more retarded.

Also, this is just like saying video games depicting violence is murder and punishable as that.

Yeah, but Australia is basically second in line in the 'Holy fuck , is our government ever stupid!' list.
Wow... us english-speakers are quickly running out of countries...
And Canada is supposed to be the most rational of all of them :/
I was about to say come to england, but we get pretty much everyone turning up on our door step asking for free health care and we just let them in. On the other hand I heard the moon is a good place for us to run too :p

Although it is somewhat flimsy, you have to wonder how Japan - a nation where the questioned pornography originated from, and where similar materials exist in abundance - has such a relatively low incidence of sexual crimes.

It may be unpleasant and disturbing material, but I'd rather have people taking their sexual frustrations out on cartoons and manga than actual children.

I always thought pedophiles were being punished for harming children, but obviously they're being punished for having a taboo fetish.

There's very little justice in the justice system it seems. Why are they ruining this mans' life instead of doing something about REAL child pornography and exploitation or animal abuse? It also seems that America is quickly becoming the land of the censored instead of the land of the free.

but argued that the material had no "arguable scientific, literary, artistic or political value" and was "clearly obscene."
And who the hell decides that?

That's the main thing that bugs me, that and the fact that he had to plea guilty 'cause they knew the jury would never give him a fair trial. He shouldn't be charged with anything.

I don't see how this can be considered a crime. Nobody got hurt, and nobody's life was made any worse by him possessing that stuff.

In fact, people's lives got better. He paid an artist for his work, he paid a delivery company, and he gets to enjoy the material in the privacy of his own home. People made money, and nobody got hurt.

Its just...wrong.

I would find it hard to call that "art".
