The problem with that film (OK, yes, there are many many MANY fucking problems with it) isn't that they had the tacked on 'happy ending' in place of the 'original' one where he survived, its that the ending of the book was entirely ignored in the first place.

Actually, fuck that, its that THE ENTIRE FUCKING BOOK was ignored in the first place. Yes, I get that they wanted to modernise it and everything, but they could have done that oh so very easily without changing the vampires into mostly mindless zombies. The ending of the book was pretty much perfect. It does not, however, leave any kind of room for a possible sequel, which will be the main reason why the producers totally ignored it.

Will Smith's character in I Am Legend. All very noble sacrificing yourself for the women and child, however I'm sure having you and the cure together would have a lot more useful to the scientists who will now be working on mass producing it. Making your life alot more valuable in the grand scheme of things. I imagine the scientists will have had to spend alot of time reverse engineering the cure in order to recreate it, where as if he was still alive they could probably started mass producing the cure right away. Maybe a little picky but that has always bug me in that film.

The original ending, which is basically Smith's character realizing the "vampires" were sapient and just trying to get their friends/family back after he kidnaps them, was pulled after test screening audiences didn't like it.

If you were a biologist, and you found a brand new, completely alien lifeform, what was the first thing you do? Nearly every slasher movie I've ever seen.
In order to drive the plot towards more murder/gore/jump scares/etc., someone has to do something that no one in their right mind would ever even CONSIDER. These include (but are not limited to):

*Walking around in the dark when you know for a FACT that a murderer is there
*Not calling 911 immediately (the phone line is cut, occasionally)
*Venturing to places that no one would want to go for the sake of "fun"
*Not listening to the one sensible person, dismissing their logical concern
*Hiding in extremely obvious places, like a closet
*Not making "FIND A GUN" their #1 priority
*Not leaving as soon as things start to get suspicious
*Constantly screaming loudly, in order to give away their position
*Immediately dismissing the killer as "dead" once they temporarily incapacitate him

Maybe the Slasher genre is just intentionally filled with a bunch of empty-skulled protagonists, so we don't feel bad when they inevitably get picked off. But then, somehow, some idiot manages to actually beat the supernatural killing machine. Why not just have everyone get killed? Isn't that what the audience would rather see? You've set up the movie so that we hate the protagonists and love the villain, and then you try to switch it around at the very last minute.
When you watch a Friday the 13th movie, what do you want to see? A bunch of idiot teenagers goofing off for an hour and 30 minutes, or Jason Vorhees? Sometimes I get the impression that the directors are asking the exact same question... except they mean it.

Really? I only found him that way during Hanako's and Rin's stories...and the only time I yelled "you idiot" was during the latter. Otherwise, he's a pretty friendly guy trying to get used to his new life situation, who's biggest problem with social interaction is oversensitivity in trying not to overstep any bounds or cause offense.

Granted, I never got any of the bad endings, so I know he has the potential to be a complete dumbass, but I kept him from making any game-ending mistakes.
