How can people like Amnesia?

Having worked customer service, I find myself a bit jaded towards scary stories. I can really only appreciate the craftsmanship, and how well they perform. I tend to make a game out of predicting when and where things will pop up.

The part of Amnesia that appealed to me was discovering the true nature, not of the unnameable menace stalking him, but of himself. It is spelled out with little uncertainty in a final memo right before the final confrontation, but there are solid, consistent hints throughout. This game does justify the narrative beginning with a self-inflicted amnesia. I give it high marks for that. The chase sequence in the flooded basement was pretty decent as well.

I don't find things going "bump" in the night particularly frightening. Doom 3, the few moments when I was not jumped by something attacking from a narrow space as I passed simply served as a certain indicator that I'd be backtracking through that same section of the map later. There were no surprises. There was no overwhelming dread. It wasn't interesting.

The game that does the best to put the fear in me has to be the Fatal Frame series. You do get to fight back against the ghosts assaulting you. But you can never be sure when they will strike. They move oddly. And your most potent strike is to look directly at the scary thing at the very instant when it is trying to kill you. You are rewarded for taking pictures of not just the attacking spirits, but the background ones. The game rewards you for noticing everything it does to frighten you. And very little of it is accidental. One segment, before you are attacked by a ghost of a woman with a broken neck, involves seeing her spirit take a nose-dive off a balcony you're standing under. You've almost certainly saved the game a room beforehand. And, if you are the sort of completionist who must photograph every rare shot in the game, you have a very hard positioning yourself for this shot. So you must reload and attempt it... each time, this woman's ghost repeats the moment of its death before you. The sickening crunch coming repeatedly. You cannot save her. You cannot stop it. You can document it, or you can try to forget it and merely survive.

Horror is different from fear. Games are lousy at providing you with fear. Fear involves the unknown. The uncertain. You can, while walking through a bad neighborhood, fear assault. It isn't certain. You might make it out intact. Where there is fear, there can be hope. Horror comes from certainty. I'm certain many of us have experienced an echo of it in games when we unexpectedly stumble across a room filled with health and ammo... because we know this means a tough fight is going to hit us in the instant we leave. A game can give us dread and anticipation.. but if they could reliably produce real fear and horror... we would stop playing. We always have that escape route.

What I think the original poster is really trying to learn is the nature of fear. Possibly how to produce it, perhaps how to experience it. And that... is a detailed and intricate psychological inquiry. We don't know what you fear, any more than we know what strains of viral infection you are immune to. It varies greatly by individual. But it is hard to find one's fears. Your fears manipulate and protect you. You avoid going where you fear to tread. You do not even think about it. But now that you've asked the question, and read this far, you will begin to notice the moments in your life when you avoid something without knowing why. And you will hesitate. If you have time, you will investigate. You will venture down that oddly lit corridor at work. You will look behind that strange piece of equipment, or under the stairs.

Most likely, you will find there was nothing to fear to begin with. You'll question what little information you had regarding your aversion to such spaces. Eventually, you will cease to fear and avoid such...

And we'll be waiting for you then, delicious friend.

It isnt a Horror Scary Game.

Its a Story Based Adventure Game with a Horror Flavor.
It isnt a whole game about being scared.

I felt the same as you op after I realised I could bunnyhop quake-style and that holding large square objects in front of the monster made it blind.

It just felt too buggy to be scary. Breaks all immersion.

I'm not sexually aroused by Ms. Johanson. Also, King Graham for the win.

Also, I'm a little disappointed that everyone can remember what was or wasn't scary about amnesia.

Personally, I don't get off on the 'atmospheric' horror games. I prefer the 'jump-scare' ones like Dead Space 2.

My friend kept going on and on and on about Amnesia, so he may have ruined it more than the general internet opinion of it, but boy was I unimpressed once I played it. The creepy moments early on aren't creepy, the pacing is terrible ("it needs x amount of time to get going" is never a good thing - I had the same problem with highly-acclaimed Witcher), it desperately needs more of a story-hook than "you have, guess what, Amnesia!", and the atmosphere didn't draw me in because it kinda just looks like Oblivion.

You know which creepy atmospheric game with barely a story and puzzle-survival-gameplay drew me in within the first 5 seconds? LIMBO. All the things Amnesia can't seem to manage in the first hour or two, LIMBO gets right by the time the first screen finished loading - which, as it happens, is immediately.

While you are mostly right, we can explain the main reasons, other than the atmosphere, the feeling of helplessness, you really cant defend yourself very well. I've never played it, I've never been a fan of horror games, I'm downright a pansy with scary games, but this is one of the only games I cant even watch people play (really doesn't help when I'm watching them play alone at night with the lights off but whatever). But I guess if someone is used to that feeling then they wont be as affected. If it didn't scare you, then oh well, and if you lied just to get a lot of replies, then you are clever, but nobody likes you for it.

I don't own the game myself due to my terrible PC but I played through it up until the storage area at a friends house, and I must say I love it.
The thing that made it scary for me was that there aren't a lot of monsters around to begin with which builds tension, and when you do run into a monster the only thing you can do is run and hide. The soundtrack really enhances the atmosphere and I'm a big fan of the click and drag controls so you can slowly open a door in a dark corridor hoping you don't get killed.
In my short play through there were three moments that really got my heart pounding.

(Spoiler alert!)

The first time was when I ran into a monster and hid in a corner for a solid two minutes with the monster breathing down my neck when I turned around he stared me right in the face, a while later I had to run through a corridor filled with water and invisible monsters which turned into the most tense game of the floor is lava I've ever played and the last one I recall is getting ambushed by a monster and being forced to hide in a closet. I've never experienced anything like this in other games and these were the parts I loved most also they didn't resort to cheap jump scares.



As for the headphones and dark room it does raise immersion (I couldn't do the latter because I was already hogging my friends PC and not talking...) but it's the same as horror films they're just more fun when you watch them at night.

Just out of curiosity which games do you consider scary?

Yes, truly you are a man's man. You have braved Amnesia, feeling not a moment of trepidation. You braved those darkened digital halls feeling nothing. Now you can tell us how much better you are, truly you are King, Mr. Snark.

Fear is subjective, just because you didn't find it scary doesn't mean it isn't. Also people need to stop complaining when they don't find horror scary. A good horror story doesn't just try to scare you.

On topic: The game is immersive, the sound design really pulls you in, there is nothing like playing Amnesia with a good set of headphones. Amnesia is a game that plays with primal fears, it's a visceral experience (though that's not to say it's basic, it does some neat things). I found it affecting and revolting (in a good way) because, I enjoy life, I revel in it, Amnesia portrays some grisly scenes which just got a rise out of me. It utterly isolates you and then assaualts you with inhuman things from the dark, that spooked me as a kid, and it still did there.

Scary is kind of a subjective concept. So maybe you didn't find Amnesia scary, but a lot of other people did. It's like how spiders terrify some people but not others. You can't really judge a horror game based solely on how much it scared you, but judge it based on plot, atmosphere and gameplay. I have yet to play Amnesia, but one of my friends started playing it recently and she said it scared her silly. It all depends on what you find scary.

OT: I wouldn't read too much into it. If it scared you awesome, if it didn't, oh well. I akin it to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. That game didn't scare me, but it sure as hell immersed me in a horror environment. It was really creative and thrilling to play. Scary? Not really.

On a side note watching Day9 play Amnesia was both hilarious and annoying simultaneously. Man he can scream like a ***** lol

Some reason a game designer thought it would be a good idea to have the zombies stop running at you when they get close enough.
Turn off the background music in RE5, it makes it awesome.

I found amnesia scary because although there isnt really a penalty for dying and thus dying should be pointless i fear death in amnesia. Death has a high value assigned. You dont die often, or even have the chance to die often in the game, basically since death is so few and far between you see the deaths in amnesia as "scarce" and thus you see them as more important, you assign value to them.

As well as this the game goes between two different paces, sequences of complete safety and security, and then suddenly through a door its all ripped away, making you wish for the safety again, the vast contrast is startling and made me scared personally. Think the spare parts cellar later in the game. The dark is crushing, the lantern fails a lot and your character is a weak human. A normal weak human. Games have often instilled in us the idea we can achieve the impossible, do abnormal feats, no need to fear common humon scares like monsters or aliens, everything has a weakness. Wrong. In amnesia YOU are the weakness and the monsters are now the main characters, unkillable, walking jugernauts who are stronger, faster and have keener senses than you.

The insanity in the dark was terrible (in a good way), in the dark i was more naturally scared over long periods of time as i started fearing monster attack the longer i was there without seeing a single thing. The insanity added, as well as from my own imagination, the characters imagined monsters and threats, i was jumping at shadows and doors constantly, and the fact the actuall character shivered and stooped, sometimes shivering and gasping when i checked a dark corner or opened a door added to my own fears.

You never see the monsters, i dont even know what they look like, and i dont want to know. The rattling, the roars, and the heavy padding of their feet scared me shitless. All i knew was:

These things are superhuman
They want me dead
Run for the love of fuck RUN

The role reversal kinda screwed up my gamer instincts of being the dominant one in any match up or combat, in this game i was the fleeing enemy being crushed. It kinda screwed up my gameplay tactics. And made me feel small and weak. Every time i had to flee and sneak. I felt like a mouse, and that made me easier to scare.

But why am i even bothering. I think amnesia is a masterpiece. I love it to bits. But if it doesnt scare you it just doesnt. Its a fantastic experience and id prefer to think that rather than being some sort of good thing, i feel kinda sorry. Its like someone who cant find the fun in christmas. You cant find the scary in amnesia. You are deprived a unique and awesome feeling. I hope you can find it elsewhere.

Possibly the scariest game ever made.

Give it to the Prison section, it takes a while to pick up, but at the Prison section, and probably the place where you have to craft the explosion, the name escapes me, true bricks will be shat.
