I live in the UK so getting a gun is mostly unlikely, swords and knives on the other hand are very cool to collect.

It causes more trouble than it might help prevent crime.
Criminals own guns no matter what the law is, look at the mess in california and its illigal to have a gun outside your home and how it peopl are still shot with guns Bought off the black market? now look at texas were you can openly walk around with a gun and compare the crimrate between taxas that allows citizens to carry guns to california that does not allow citizens to carry guns and tell me what the differense is. Would anyone risk robbing a person with the strong possibility of being shot in the process? i own a few rifles, handguns and shotguns all locked up, empty and trigger locked in a weapons locker. I also live in california but i am not allowed to walk out of the house with it.

When I start living alone, I'll probably just get a Tazer. Guns aren't fun for me to shoot, plus a Tazer would do away with all the nasty killing business if I never needed to defend myself.

Tazers do kill people tho? I mean it's electricity, that shit kills.
(nothing compared to a handgun i just felt like bringing it up)
It just stuns people. It will only kill you if you have heart or nervous system problems.

Guns are a staple of life and as such, I don't see the reason why we shouldn't own one. Thats like telling a person in the 1700's that owning a sword is wrong. Correct management of leeting people own guns however, is a completely different story. Collecters, farmers and just the general public should have strict guidelines and rules to follow, both medically and pratically.

I'm guessing the reason for this thread is the recent shootings. The problem here lies with the fact he was allowed a gun when he was clearly unsound in mind and he was let down by the state. Had he not had a gun, he'd have found another method of killing his target. Charging with a knife/blade, hit and run and so on. So eitherway, the attempted killing would have happened, America would have decended into backbiting and insulting each other, and the tea party and Palin would have been blamed.

The argument for owning guns is a self-perpetuating one that applies to any weapon. If no one owned one, there would be no need for any of them.

The only thing you accomplish in owning a gun is ensuring that another person will also own one.
Ummm last i checked we have the right to bear arms. As long as you own a gun without using it on others its fine with me.

Guns are awesome. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I know more about guns than any gun store worker could ever dream to know. I started shooting at the age of 6 and I will probably never stop until I die. As I stated in another post about guns I have shot everything from 8mm to .50 AE, .224 to 50 BMG and from 10 to 20 gauge.

You should try a .44 Mag revolver, it's a blast.
I have shot the Taurus Raging Bull .44 Magnum. wonderful gun to shoot. I have also fire it in .454 casull.

As a Canadian on a military base, and (ironicaly) has no clue about weapon control laws,I'd take a Layman's Terms opinion of "Home Defence in the Event of Home Invasion" is the only useful purpose to civilian owned firearms.

I'm shocked and horrified and what I'm reading. The only person who seems to be making a clear point is Azrael The Cat. Guns are designed to kill. Guns are incredibly effective at this job. Do you really want tools designed to kill freely available on your country's streets? I don't.

Shootings don't occur at an NRA meeting or gun club because why would somebody turn on their fellow gun-nut? If nobody has guns, it's a fuckload safer than if everybody does. All it takes is one jittery nutjob...

I thought these forums were meant to be vaguely intelligent... fuck if you guys haven't proved it otherwise. Holy shit...

I support owning guns for sport, shooting targets etc.

However, i did buy my girlfriend a gun for personal protection at her apartment and once when we were having an argument she did pull the fucking thing on me.... at that point i began to have second thoughts about the right to carry.

I likes em. I only own one gun (a 12 Bore shotgun for clay pigeon shooting and small game) but I have great fun with it. Shooting is a pretty socail hobby, and a satisfying one at that :)

I also like the gun laws we have here in the UK. They are strict, but its not as hard as people think to get a gun legally, but its more of a privalage than a right.

Thats why tight gun laws are good, I gotta say that while I'm sort of jealous of the variety of guns Americans can use, I'm glad our laws are a lot tighter. They help to prevent jittery nutjobs getting hold of guns. But guns are still good fun :D

Unsure. I dislike any restriction on liberty (such as preventing someone owning a gun) but at the same time I rather like the idea of being able to go my entire life without encountering one.

I'm going to get one in a couple years when I hit 21, I'll use it for shooting ranges though I plan to carry it around if I can get a permit.

I think people should be allowed to have and carry guns.

You'll notice the deadly shootings never (nearly never? I'm not entirely sure it has literally not happened once) occur at a gun range or an NRA meeting, and many of the deadly shootings such as the recent one at Arizona could probably have suffered a lower body count if someone at the scene had a gun, and used it to stop the shooter.
Actually, someone nearby who arrived at the scene after a few seconds did carry a gun.

Almost blew the brains out of the guy who had wrested the gun from the gunman, but luckily decided to tackle him instead before realizing he was attacking the wrong guy. Oh and this guy I'm talking about? He approached the scene with his gun in his pocket because he feared he might be considered a second gun-man and fired upon if he didn't.

I don't oppose civillian ownership of firearms, but there needs to be a much more stringent system in place to assess, train and prepare gun owners for the type of chaotic situations they might encounter. It was pure luck that prevented any more people from being shot that day.
Hey, it has to count for something that he DIDN'T shoot the wrong guy right? Could have easily gone the other way if he was there from the front.

So if i wanted i can get a gun off the street illigally so how is that making it safer? Your argument is flawed you make it sound as if people cant get guns anyway.

Yea but your body seezes and then you fall? Crack your head on something, swallow your tounge by accident choke? I've heard about it happening more that you would think, just sayin nothing is without risks.
