Usually, when someone unjustly flames me, I break out my time-tested counter-argument:
START
Chill the fuck out. (Explain why they should chill the fuck out).
END
Seriously. Say that, and you win.

These have proven themselves time and again for me. Or I just post a polite and intelligent response, if the argument is valid.
Posts like that by me generally get hated upon. People just need to understand that I know more about things than them! *Breathes a sigh of contempt for his fellow man*
Cool story, bro.

Some tactics to avoid getting flamed.

1. Keep yourself grounded. Posting in anger will only lead to more provocation. The best posts are well thought out ideas that present your case without cursing someone down. "Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy." - Sir Isaac Newton.

2. Always double-check and do research. Opinions are baseless, but facts hold clout. Whether something is or is not, can mean the difference between helpless victim and informed victor.

3. Leave yourself an exit. Know when to walk away, or else you'll be like oxygen to a flame.

4. Speak your mind. Don't let a crowd persuade you from speaking your opinion.

5. Proofread. The slightest error will expose you to all who choose to disagree. An extra few minutes editing could save you a world of trouble.

Why do you care if you get flamed? As long as you have a well-reasoned argument, you'll either win it, or the other will give up eventually.

Debate is part of what goes on here in the escapist forums, so naturally flaming is going to occur every now and then.

As many have demonstrated to MovieBob, if you don't want to get flamed, make sure that when you state an opinion, you don't also insult the intelligence of those who disagree.

Yes, I do argue it out, but it never goes anywhere, it always ends up a continuous volley of opinions and facts to back them up. <-----annoying part is that-a-way.

GTFO the Internet.

Yes Im serious. This is the Internet. Someone somewhere will not like what you say and flame you. Or a troll decides to have a little... "fun" and flame you for the hell of it.
Hello sir. I don't know if you really read the topic. I asked how YOU keep from being flamed. I didn't ask for any tips or anything. I'm doing just fine thank you (while I do also welcome any advice you guys have to give).

I've been flamed a few times here, thats usually because I rushed my post and didn't think. I don't mind arguing, but being completely shut down bothers me.

Just post something really awesome and wait for the props. Works for me :D
You're awesome.

How do you not get flamed? Don't speak out against any company because fanboys like to chew you out because [Company A] means a lot to them because they're perfect and that company cares a lot about the fanboy and NOT just the fanboys money. You can have an opinion but it's wrong because that company is perfect and you're just wrong, all the time especially for not agreeing with it. So just get used to being wrong because that's what you are, wrong.

...Or you just ignore what the person says against you unless it's a well worded argument and not them just whining and calling you an idiot for your opinion. Many people take opinions like facts, and that's a sad truth. Carefully wording something might be that extra bit that helps you, avoid saying blunt statements like "This game is awful" or "This company sucks" is always a plus.

Use careful wording or huge, difficult words. If people think you know what you're saying, you don't get flamed as much.

I do get flamed and I reply solemnly.

It's my opinion, why should I be beat down for saying what I want?

Maybe instead of looking for ways not to get....uh...yelled at....for expressing your opinion, how bout you just defend your opinion if anyone disagrees with it?

Or, you know, just ignore them.

It's just the internet.

I appreciate being flamed. Then you simply point out the inadequacy of the other person's argument and move on (opinions are just opinions, why does it matter to you what I think, etc etc). Flamers are like trolls. You go "cool story, troll" and move right along.

Typically I try to be as level headed and friendly as I possibly can. If I can come across as respectful and open minded even in a vicious debate then in theory the other party is less likely to respond in anger if not for the fact that he/she is impressed that I am being nice then the fact that he/she doesn't want to risk looking like the party in the wrong in the argument.

Still, as a Halo fan, a fan of Ashley Williams, a political left wing, a fan of Avatar and so many other things, sometimes flamage comes to me whether I want it or not. Still for the most part, being nice helps me avoid it.

I tend not to care too much of others opinions to feel flamed but enough so to weigh its opinion value

I post my views, back them up as soundly as I know how, and if someone wants to flame me for it, I quote Tory Belleci: "LIGHT IT ON FI-YAAAAAAH!"

You could try phrasing your potentially incendiary topic as a question, or an opinion, a definite statement tends to set people off:
" I think Bioshock is just a repackaged System Shock 2, what do you think?" vs.
"Bioshock is just System Shock 2 made pretty and dumbed down for the console tards."
Also works wonders for law enforcement, phrasing as an opinion means you're legally covered, here anyway.

I tend to treat everything and I mean [i/]everything[/i] as comedy. Someone flames me for and I laugh further.

Also, having good information backing you is ALWAYS a plus.
