- get into a bed time routine. Go to bed at the same time every night.
- exercise and don't eat a heavy meal before bedtime.
- avoid caffeine and alcohol.
- make your room dark
- if you are still awake after 30 minutes, go and sit in another room and read for about 20 minutes, then try again.
- most importantly, don't nap.

These are proven methods that will cure your insomnia.

Edit: to those who are recommending alcohol, that's the biggest piece of dogcrap advice ever. Alcohol prevents you from having a proper REM sleep, which is where you get most of your rest from. You may doze off easier, but you won't sleep the way you should, stop trying to make people more tired.

I am one of those people who have a lot of trouble sleeping. What are some ways that help someone get to sleep faster, or more comfortably?
i'm an insomniac myself and the system i've adopted, is staying up all night one night then sleeping the next night. so basically, sleep once every other night. sure it sucks and half way through your sleep deprived day it feels like you've been on a two-day drinking binge... but short of shelling out the coin for perscription sleeping pills, that's what works best.... for me anyways

I lie down in bed and think about what I would do with the powers of a character from a book. Then I fall asleep thinking of manipulation, murder and huge power trips.

Oh as in how well do I sleep? pretty well, but stress is making me sleep longer as I am tossing and turning at night. Sleep longer for less rest....grrr damn body needs to fix this.

I lay on my stomach with my pillow over my head, and a cat sitting on the pillow.
It never fails me.
Gotta say... that would be really funny to see.
I'm told so, but sadly the cat won't sit on the pillow if the light is on.

oh... my... GOD... SQUID GIRL :D

and on a more on topic sentence I sleep with blankets on my bed just sorta the bottem sheet a duvet(fail spelling be quiet) and on of my old blankets and I just wear a smaller blanket over my head. :p

Don't play video games before going to bed. It's the absolute worst thing to do. Your brain is creating new neural pathways that are a result of learning how to accomplish something and remembering details, which is what video games enforce best. High cerebral activity is often the cause of a bad night's sleep. Always read a book for an hour before bed, and not a boring one, since you'll want to stop reading. Wanting to read a book and dozing off while doing so is a good way to fall asleep. Sleeping patterns affect success of sleep as well. Waking up at midday may make it impossible for you to fall asleep. Sucks to wake up early but do it anyway as it saves frustration at night and ultimately you'll be less tired than after a sleepless one. When all is said and done, I often fail to fall asleep for a long time. One of the downsides to playing video games, unfortunately.

yeah cause that absouleutly the reaon why i get good nights sleep whilest playing games before... and im pretty sure my sleep aptmia clinic told me differant...

I am terrible about sleeping, night time is when I like working or making things. I have forced myself to live on first shift for years but it means I don't get a lot done other than work and I find that I am less likely to create/fix anything.
I take Ambien when it gets really out of control or if I know I need to be up in the morning. It has side effects though. I have found that if I go to sleep with anything on my mind I end up trying to fix it in my sleep. Like if I go to bed the least bit hungry I have gotten up and cooked. Made myself sick for a couple days after using some bad soy sauce one night, soy sauce I wouldn't have used if I had be awake. Now I have a little snack when I take it. I have also sent emails, had conversations, posted items on Craigslist, sent texts... The next day it either feels like a dream or I have completely forgotten about it and only find out when people ask me wtf about. It is embarrassing sometimes. :/
