Mine is from the dark days in my past when I used to go to 4chan, I also just think it's very good advice.

Well, I made my own so I rather doubt there's a repeat of mine. We're a pretty diverse group, so repeats don't happen much.

I think it's because everyone is trying to be "unique", thus people make a conscious effort to pick an avatar that hasn't been used. Mine is a photo of the Pink Floyd "eye" which was featured on their "Pulse" DVD - I just found it on google images, but it's become my regular avatar that I use everywhere, including Steam.

Very few people have heard of the band Chameleon Circuit

My avatar is from a youtube competition for one of their songs.

Obscure much, but well worth the find

Yes, we do have distinctive avatars. And no one here got the same avatar as me, and perhaps never will.
But I can only assume some troll in a far distant forum got my avatar, that's talking about some idiot having the same avatar as himself...
Perhaps at this very MOMENT! *GASP!* SCARY SCARY!

In my case, my avatar isn't exactly a well-known character. Although there does seem to be an unwritten code that avatars remain personal.

It's simply because the Avatars are like our own second name here. The Username and Avatar give us a sense of personality and the idea that we can let everyone know in a small picture and a name, who we are and what we like.

Yeah, me too. I've actually been surprised by the openness and lack of violent speciesism among Escapists.
Thanks guys!!

I think it's because everyone at the Escapist knows that they want to be unique, so we pick something that's popular yet still different. Take my The World Ends With You Avatar, the symbolic pin that starts off the whole game itself. It's unique, even though it's so common.

That, and we try to stay away from the Yahtzee icons, we know too many people came here at first for Yahtzee... I did.

There are actually a good bit of repeats among the new users, but higher ups have been around long enough to know which ones haven't been taken.

It's kind of an unspoken rule. Watch what happens when someone does use the same avatar as someone else, it's not pretty.

I at least am safe in the knowlege that since everyone either hates jRPGs outright, or just hates FFVIII, I'm unlikely to see another Squall.

Well, I designed my avatar, with a little help for the moving bits, myself. If anyone else had this avatar then I'd know they copied me.

Well from the billions of images you can get it's unlikely that you're going to have 2 people get the same one.

I fully expect that, once Mafia 2 comes out, everyone will realise that it's the greatest game ever and copy me though.
