I like to think people see my avatar and take me more seriously. Though I doubt I'm of the forum fame you associate with Hubilub, or NeonBob.
Don't feel too bad, as I have no idea who they are. Also, being famous on an internet forum is like winning the first prize in your 4H catagory at the local fair, i.e., who cares?

Also, yeah, the av helps with the SRS BIZNZ appeal, but "Captain Pancake" just tosses that right out the window.

Btw, awesome user name.

Well thanks to the E-Team I got my new customized avatar.
My old one was from Doomsday Arcade.

I really like that aspect of the Escapist community, though I don't post much myself I can quickly identify a person who's posts I like to read.

I'm not sure that many other people would love an amphetamine addicted socialite who died in 1971 enough to have her picture as their avatar.

hehe, mine's a dancing ninja I first saw here [http://ninjaworksit.ytmnd.com/] over... 5-6 years ago.

Spent a long ass time looking for the .gif, eventually just asking the guy for it and he gave it to me.

I've seen someone else with it, but I don't hate him for it. It just shows we both are awesome beyond measure ;)

Before I used to have these avatars:

I was playing Halo 3 on Blackout with friends, and we found a basketball hoop. So we screwed around and then my friend ended up like that. I took the picture and used it for a while.

This one is from a show called Krod Mandoon. It aired on Comedy Central for a bit and I was surprised at how funny it was. I loved the main villain, Dongalor, so I tried to find a picture that showed what he was like. I settled on this one because I liked it the best.I also have a holiday version made by Diagonal Horizontality [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Diagonal%20Horizontality]]:

Thanks again Diagonal!

This one I found while giving advice to Sir Ollie about what to go into a scam job interview looking like. I put up a few pics of awesome mustaches, and eventually took this picture and made it my avatar for a while. Man the TF2 group is fun, I LOVE YOU ALL!

And those of the stories of my avatars...

Well a lot of these are obscure games or TV references (mine's not an obscure game but old and minute enough to not be duplicated, old avatar is popular but again, minute). There's so many pictures you could do that duplicates are rare. If my old stomping grounds had Avatars we'd have half the people with Sephiroth or Kefka Avatars.

That said, one close thing to duplicates I'm getting sick of would be that weird picture of a guy with a toothy grin, wide eyes, and eagerly clenched fingers. I first saw it making a Squirtle, but has been used to create a number of similar-looking ones.

This is a great way to disguise a "How'd you end up picking your avatar" thread!

Dude, no-one loves Metal Slug more than me! Well, except that other guy on here who uses a MS gif as his avatar...

Because you get a custom avatar made for you if you ask and know what you want. Seriously though, yeah it's our digital representation and we want to be unique, which is why to my knowledge the only two Dr. Cox avatars are mine and Sass's.

I suppose everyone likes different things and wants to be represented as unique, like my Jet Set Radio Future avatar.

Its because the avatars are our digital faces that encourages us to be unique.
Also, this is a "gaming" forum, rather than just a "Halo" or "Dr. Who" oriented forum. Its very open to interpretation.
More than that, I'd say - the off topic forum could easily bring in a few non-gamers, and out avatars don't have to be based solely on gaming!

I miss my old one, as awesome a movie as Vanishing Point is, it's too small a picture to really appreciate it. I went for this because it's the cover of the region 1 DVD and it's far cooler than the one I have, it would make such a cool poster but I've never been able to find one.

I think I might change it back to the Ministry Of Sound logo, I liked that it was minimalist and fairly iconic/recognisable.

Edit: There we go.

Mine was made for me by Fanboy, so if someone else uses it, it's pretty obvious and I can PM them and ask them to change it.
Yay! Me too!

Aaaanyway, I have seen avatars that other users use, and I have, no doubt, cursed that I wasn't the person who found some of these, but then again, I'd never, ever, ever use an avatar I saw someone else use. Even if I found that out later, I'd change it. Luckily mine is unique, and no one has used it.

I just randomly remembered Miffy one day and that's about the whole reason I have my avatar. Randomly. . . :p

I always get mine from... obscure places, cut them out of comics and the like. Over time I have compiled an extensive collection of images (Porn interestingly absent) that provide an inexhaustible source of avatars, if I were so inclined to use them that is.

most people make their own avatars rather than recycling others. if you make it, there's a high chance it's unique.
the eye I'm using is an edit I did from a photo of my friend... will be changing it soo tho, the two of us haven't been on very good terms lately.
