I made my own out of a Ragnarok image, of all things XD.

But I think is because the avatar is your "face" on the internet, you normally don't see the name of the poster but rather the avatar to identify it at first glance, like in real life you wouldn't want to wear someone else face or that someone would wear yours (unless out of sheer mischief... but let's not go there XD).

I use my avatar in every forum I can or in every page I'm subscribed to (even facebook XD) and when I change it, I change it everywhere, so If you guys see that image roaming around chances are it's me on the other side of the screen.

My pet monkey fucked up my avatar picture. =P (I know what some people will say, why did you buy that? Well I got bored and I had points that I hadn't been using for well... ever so I was like ah what the hell. O_O)

I'm apparently the only person in the world who likes Seth, or thinks that S.I.N. is a good name for and evil arms manufacture, so people are unlikely to use mine.

Everyone likes to express themselves, and an avatar helps to express your interests or indeed the kind of person you are or fandom you follow... i just like drawing my comic self!

well I like mine, I've seen a few like it though, guess there's a few fans of FF and 8-bit theatre, not exatly the same picture but the same character. It's an 8-bit sprite so I guess there can't be much difference between them.

For me, one of the great things about the escapist is that everbody has a very distinct "face" that anybody can instantly identify with. You can instantly tell, it's the hpynotoad guy that comments on every forum! The cat girl doing... something. Its that toon thing with the blue shirt and red hat that always is asking stupid questions! But why is it we have so few repeats? While 99% of the photos have been something from popular culture, they rarely overlap in use. I know like the Guru has been used at least twice, and somebody is using a back shot of that woman Suasan uses as her avatar, and many people use stuff from Zero Punctuation, but those cases are reletively rare. How can a site as big as the Escapist have so few doubles and so much distiction with everybody?
I'm constantly changing and I HAD to recently, because someone copied my "gears of war" timesplitters 4 logo, so now I have the Xeno Baby!

No one wants to be that guy who has X's avatar. Everyone wants to be original. Everyone wants to be famous on the Escapist. Everyone wants to be themselves. There are varied interests. All apply to different people.

Although I don't think I have come across another user with Vincent though after saying this someone will quote me who has him as their avatar knowing my luck.

Well, the simple reason is this: you use your own god damn avatar, or you get lynched: "hey you! You stole my avvie! GTFO!!!"

if I ever see ANYONE on here with my MrBacon avatar, I swear I will eat them alive. The one I'm using now? Sure, go ahead, I'll even make it better for you, but MrBacon is MINE, so back off 0_0

Individuality?

I made mine, so I keep it. Should update it to one of my photos, but I can't be bothered.

Different tastes? I know there are other Spider Jerusalems (The guy in the pic) running around on these forums, but none of them use the same pictures, so it all works out.

He goes on IRC still, I think. I haven't been on there at the same time as him in quite the while. It's not as if he's left, he's just not posting very often. You can hardly blame the guy for not wanting any more avatar requests. The guy is a Photoshop prodigy and everyone and their dog wants him to do something with their avatar. Personally, I'll be fine if I get to see him occasionally, exchange a pun or two or see him drop something off at 'The artist in thee'. That's just me, though.

There are a good deal of people who make their own avatar's and/or who make avatars for others. There was a thread all about making original avatars for users. I don't know if it still exists. Then you have guys like SharPhoe who has an entire line of avatars made on request for people. All of my avatars have been digital paintings of mine and I'm also responsible for Souplex's avatar. Lots of original material on the site.
