I have played numerous MMO's and always stayed away from WoW due to the negativity from all the WoW bashers until one day I thought i would try the free trial. All I can say is that i'm damned glad I did as it truly is a great MMO.
It is most importantly FUN, and with some great classes and areas to quest in mixed with some great visuals, yes I know it is cartoony but it works and doesn't require a top end PC to run it.

The grind to 80 is a lot easier nowadays than what it used to be thus adding more fun and less frustration and when you do get to 80, the grind is for gear which is also easy enough but yet again, it is fun.
The biggest negative aspect of WoW is the playerbase. Many of them are great but alas there are a lot of arseholes but thats what your ignore button is for.

As a few people have metioned, try the free trial to see for yourself and just dabble with the classes to see what suits you best.
Also, you can now buy the original WoW game and it's first expansion 'The Burning Crusade' in the Battlechest box set for just £7.99 from Game which is a bargain as you also get 2 books/guides (a bit like massive game manuals) which contain everything you would need to know about the game.
Hope you give it a go as it is worth it and enjoy it too :)

Well cast aside your presumptions my good friend because I tend to be as annoyingly amiable until people stop being so blindsighted by past wrong-doings.

Hi! I'm a Retribution paladin and you will be my new bestest friend. *kidnap*

Shouldn't take much more than five days of hard grinding to get to 80. especially with a lock. Shadowbolt crit FTW

Been playing wow for 3 years... 3 long soulless years :p. but never the less, I still enjoy the game dispite the grind. I do get to the point where i just cba, so i take a break for a few days, but the grind Isn't as bad as lets say... Runescape.

If u do join and don't want a horrible questing area DO NOT GO TO DUSKWOOD it is horrible!

I never claimed things are as they were when I left. Perhaps the little Retadins started taking anger management and/or counseling for their common sociopathic tendencies... or maybe you are just an exception. Anyway nice to meet you, I iz a Drood. :D

I'm curious, I'm thinking about picking up Wow as a desto lock but i'm not too interested if the grind is really as bad as everyone says. I want to play because after my friend got her hunter to lvl 80 she wants me to play. So can anyone give me a time frame for play time, just until I can go on like raids.
really man, i would say dont get the game at all, it leaches your life away and you will have no one to blame but yourself, i try when i can to turn people away from this game when i can, but if you have to play the game, i would say there is about ( from 1 to 10) about a 7 on the grind scale, but im just wondering, what are you going to roll? and what side? (Horde is better btw.)

Ahah, maybe thats why, my guild is led by druids. I like them :) Can't play them to save my life but I would be so dead without my favorite Tree and Bear friends. Heck one of them solo'ed healing the entire first part of Ulduar all the way up to Auraiya (actually a few more attempts and I bet she could have done it too). She's a nutter, but a talented one.

I started late, so I'm sorta new-generation retribution paladin, My guild had no raiding retri paladin to speak of until I came, so I filled a niche and thusly attained a very friendly position in it, does wonders for your mood. As I understand it, retri paladins weren't very well recieved in BC raiding?

Now we're almost a requirement. It's nice to be needed.

I had a very similar fate. Started playing BC Feral and was forced into tanking... not that I didn't enjoy it, I just preferred to kitty dps. I started kitty dipsing after Wrath came out as it was buffed a bit and I knew my class. They were then buffed in patch 3.1 (I think it was that one) and became DPS gods for awhile. I enjoyed it but ironically quit during the height of the Kitty DPS' reign... probably for the better. Was fun while it lasted and I still keep in contact with some of the old guildies.

All depends on yourself. When I was still a hardcore player, I grinded craploads, the typical grinding: farming the same mobs over and over again to get some stuff. Then, at some point, I just thought "Am I having fun like this? No I'm not." and I just stopped grinding all together. I didn't miss anything, and all was well.

a few FYI's

Battlegrounds fun, Arena Bad. Battlegrounds are big 10v10 Up to 40v40. then theres Wintergrasp with 100v100. Arena is a duel in a box with 2v2, 3v3 or 5v5. Not much there except for the best gear and elitist pricks
I beg to differ, I found the occasional arena battle (without elitist pricks, at least from my side) very fun indeed. It's true though that you can make Arena just as 'hardcoar' as raiding, which can be either a good or bad thing.

What game is there that doesn't have grind?
bioshock, megaman, mario, SSBB, i could go on
I, again, beg to differ. In a way, almost every game is a grind. in Mario you grind coins. In BioShock all you do is grind Splicers, and in SSBB you grind each other (ewwwww). Look at any multiplayer shooter, chances are that there is a Deathmatch mode: kill 100 enemies. That's a pure grind.

That's an extremely broad view of "grinding"

There's no grind in levelling up. the only grinding is gearing up in raids or getting honour and arena points.
