How old were you when you had your first cigarette?

26, and I still have yet to experience more than second hand smoke.

Frankly, the concept of recreational intoxication has always been repulsive to me.

This. Never smoked.

And I never really plan to, so I assume my answer will stay as this.

My dad smoked, so, with the knowledge of what that got him (a heart attack, barely functioning lungs and constant expenses), I learned to stay as far away from those demonic things as possible. So never.

I have never smoked cigarettes in my life, but everyone knows that sophisticated men drink Cognac and smoke cigars, so I do that. Well, mostly just smoke cigars on bad days, with my fiancee. She smokes cigarettes, though.

I fit in with the "Never smoked and never will." pile.

I don't see how it is really appealing to people. I would understand if they were suicidal but for normal people...wow.

It's like asking to live less.

Oh well, it's people opinions, but I do hate it when 80% of the city is covered in smokers/smoke.

Makes me and my friend gag.

I have never smoked a cigarette and have no intention of ever doing so. A nice churchwarden pipe and some strong English tobacco, now that is what I require to smoke. Started smoking a pipe when I was nineteen and have no intention of stopping. Also by being a pipe smoker, I escape the social stigma that is associated with cigarette smoking.

You're incredibly misinformed if you think the taxes on tobacco are anywhere near to cover the costs.
Not at all.

Due to numerous smoking debates on this site, and the intense anti-smoking, preachy attitude, I've done a fair amount of research on the matter.

Turns out that, here in the UK, smokers pay in tax, double what they cost the NHS per year. And that's going on 2009-10 figures.....tax on tobacco is significantly higher now.

I'm aware that smoking's bad for you but not smoking doesn't make you any better or more intelligent than a smoker. Please, respect other people decisions. What you're doing is the equivalent of a gym junkie chastising someone for not exercising daily.

OT: I had my first cigarette at fifteen but I didn't start smoking properly until I was seventeen (nineteen now). Working at Hungry Jack's (Burger King to non-Australians) is hell and it helped me calm down while I was on break. I also like the taste of the ones I smoke (Champion Ruby or Marlboro Red) and the pleasant buzz that tobacco gives you, so there's that, too.

As a side note I have about five a day so compared to other's I'm not so bad.

I've never had one.

I hate the smell of cigarette smoke and having lungs that resemble burnt steak doesn't sound fun to me. Plus I have asthma so I'd most likely die if I tried one.

So. Been reading a couple comments and seem to recall this being a common complaint of non-smokers. Is this "smoke makes me gag" thing a genuine physical problem people have, or are their heads just so fucking far up their own asses that they physically cannot see how much of a pretentious chucklefuck they are?
You've never gagged at a bad smell or from having something stuck in your throat? If you don't have a gag reflex you'd make a great porn star.

OT: I took a drag from my cousins when I was 18, and I had an easier time hacking up hairballs than getting that shit out of my throat.

Do e-stoges (electronic cigarettes) count?
If so, 17. I share a friend's e-stoge when we hang out.

If not, either 16-ish or never. I've either been too high to know what exactly I was smoking or I to trust myself with fire.

I don't always care for the effects but it's fun.
