Humans are expansionist vampires. We move into an area, make more of ourselves, and destroy the land in the process by making shelters with harmful materials (concrete, metal, etc). Then, when we can't live there anymore, we do it again somewhere else.
Humanity has always used up more land than it should, damaging it in the process. Generally in Sci-Fi our conflicts with other species come about because of our expansionist tendencies which infringe upon their territory. Humanity then takes offense at being denied a new toy to break, and shit goes down.
Humanity isn't good to it's land, something a lot of Sci-Fi writers pick up on, and when we go in search of other land it's usually somebody else's. Humanity will blame that other person for not sharing when it's really their own fault for over-populating with no thought to sustainability.
