A prime example is hobbits. Although they aren't "human" per say, they are very human-like, in the notion that they're extremely down-to-earth, carefree, keep to themselves kind of people. They're like the hillbilly relatives you had as a kid, that would always be fun to go visit. They're kind of the "ideal humans", if you will..
seriously though, I hate cliche's. In the end, humans rarely learn the lesson and still screw up(in order for a sequel in the series usually). In reality, u7mans are dicks, and they are saints, and they are sinners, and they are stupid, and they are smart, but more than any of that they are diverse! I am me and you are you. I laugh, you cry, they smile and nod while she sits and stares. I wish they gave humans damn personalities other than "dick" and "not a dick"

Hrm... let's just review some of our current high standards in entertainment:

Jon & Kate Plus Eight
Jackass
Ryan Seacrest
ANYTHING by Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer
Michael Bay
Fox News
Ryan Seacrest
The Bachelor/ette
Twilight
RYAN &$^%ing SEACREST
The Ultimate Fighter

... and the list goes on. Just more and more glorification of violence, over-indulgence, and self-serving natures by vacuous, shallow, retarded individuals that think a nut-shot is the equivalent of Shakespeare or that they should be reward riches because their BMI is below average.

If we were judged by just THIS alone, we should be wiped from the freakin' globe.

It's a reversal of the old "Humans are Special" stereotype and ties in with "Every Ethnic Group is Special Except for Whites". The Aliens stand in for non-whites, as they always have. Now, instead of being invaders or primitives, they're preachy Mary Sues, a role once preserved for the (White Male) Human hero. The Hero's new role is to unquestioningly accept whatever wisdom they're willing to part with and bestow it upon the unwashed masses of his homeworld.

Personally, I'd like to see all races/species portrayed as selfish, manipulative, biased, and short-sighted, each in their own unique way and do away with the bizarre notion that any one race/species is more inherently right than another.
Please see Warhammer 40K and anything up coming and related to that, in which all factions are bastards and flood you with their own unique propaganda. In other news:

Having stayed at camp "Humans are dicks" for a few years, I packed my bags sometime in the last few months, during the summer holiday before Uni. As I'm sure many have now said, humans do have the capabilities of being dickish and often this is leapt upon like the last piece of chicken in the bucket when coming up with multi-cultural ideas.
There have however been a decent number of films, book etc that show humans as the good, brave, honourable guys in amidst everything else trying to brutally slay, murder and pillage them. You get both sides of the story, depending on where you look. Still, I'd agree that something that shows everyone being a bastard in their own right would be interesting. Hurry up and make Ultramarines damnit!

I believe the reason for, perhaps less than stellar portrayals of the human race in fictionalize stories derives from a desire by the writers to establish one of two characteristics, if not both. The primary usually amounts to holding preference in human superiority as the driven focal point, thus humans are exiled from the kingdom per se and must rise above, endue the eternal struggle and eventually succeed. It is in essence the typically used "humanity can achieve whatever it desires when in conjunction with one another."

Additionally there exists the contrast author who has grown tiresome with human characters and intentionally lowers their overall value in perhaps a vain attempt to alter the reader's emotional connection to the suffering alien races or the aforementioned author simply desires to mock human stupidity, which is a common source of comedy.

It seems that in this day and age, a large amount of fiction portrays the human race as a group of assholes compared to any other sentient races. Think about it, pretty much all fantasy has elves as the tree loving peaceful people, dwarfs as the honorable guys who know not to mess with stuff they shouldn't and almost every time the humans are either cutting down the tree's, taking land that they shouldn't or unleashing some evil being.

In Sci-Fi you have we are more often then not, the young, backwards aggressive race that screws everything up. Like in the new movie Avatar. Fuck those cat-elf thing, I like humans!

Do we just hate ourselves?
Self-rightoues world hating guys imminent..

Grow up. Humanity is a bastard. But that includes you. Your just a different, possibly lesser, kind of bastard.

Yeap, hell... most people are.

that doesnt mean we should discourage ourselves and think that everything is just the long continuous 'dick move' of humanity.

Elves are not real! Dwarfs are not real! If they were, they would cut down trees too and do mostly the same things as we.
They write the elves and dwarfs as good guys, because making ourselves the good guys would be unrealistic. (har-har?)

I don't think we're all that bad, but nihilism and hatred seem to be all the rage now.

I think it's mainly just that it's seen as 'edgy' and 'alternative' nowadays. But it's become so prevalent that it's really just hackneyed and irritating.

"Are humans jerks?"
I'd say yes. Purely for the fact that that narrow-mindedness and fear of new ideas is so prominent in society that it's now part of Hot Pocket commercials.

Usually what looks like "fantasy" is actually "political subtext". Humans therefore tend to cop a lot of flak because the fantasy humans are a metaphor for real life Western-world humans and real political decisions, whereas the other races are often representative of other people or political forces. The story writers are not just tryiing to be "humans are evil", read between the lines of your favourite fantasy and there's usually some other point that is trying to be made. Fantasy is one of the most politicised fiction genres that there is. Look at Tolkien for example - championing enviromental causes decades before it was fashionable or even a mainstream issue...

Humanity has me, thus it rocks.

Yeah, losing that extra feat isn't really worth the minor skill boosts and extra low-light vision.

Also, aren't mongrel dogs 'better' than the purebreeds? At least in the case of show dogs vs. shephard dogs, as I recall. Or maybe I'm talkin' bollocks. It's been years since I even looked at a piece on genetics.
Wolf/Husky hybrids are amazing with children. Not even joking.

Humans are not exactly bad or good. They kinda represent the gray area of things most of the time because we kinda do. Being a d**k however is something that is considered evil because no one likes it when it happens to them. But in todays society being a jerk is not all that bad apparently. Take the fruity pebbles commercials (if you havnt seen them i am sorry), it shows Fred about to take a bite then Barney comes steals his bowl runs off with it and nobody cares. It may be a cartoon but it shows that doing that has some comical value to people that are not involved. But at the same time if it had happened to us we get mad and say that thats not right.

So yeah, we kinda are jerks in a way. But that doesnt necessarily mean that we intend to be jerks sometimes. Some do but I myself feel really bad when I end up being a A-hole to someone. But I still laugh at other people suffering from real life d**ks so I guess that makes me a 3rd party jerk.

Also crossbreeds are genetically impossible because once they are born they are unable to reproduce, so a crossbreed of dog probably refers to two different looking dogs not two different species. Kinda like humans, so dont be racist.

Well, the science fiction writers are just following nature. Almost (stupid parrot fishes) every species in the world fills a niche and contributes the ecosystem. Humans are parasites.

Problem with your theory. In almost all works of fiction, these 'superior' races are usually much older than humanity, both in person to person basis(Tolkien's elves lived to be thousands of years old, and the dwarfs a couple hundred)and on a civilization basis(Space Marines compared to Eldar(40k)). So in short, since they have been around longer they have had more time to out live thier recklessness. Most younge races in fiction(like the Tau(40k)or the Hobits(LotR)) exhibit many "Human" qualities, if you will.

In a recent thread I talked about how awesome earth is. Are people jerks? Somtimes. Is the human race evil? NO!
