It can not be done over a computer as a computer is an object that is powered through meaning and process.

Incorrect.

Utilizing a language designed with the intent of conveying meaning to produce absurdity, however, is a mission doomed to failure.

Is that what you meant to say?

But if a word was shown to an new born baby who had no concept of words or letters would that word have any meaning to that baby? Or would showing a blind man the image of a word hold any meaning to that man?
I think the challenge was to find a statement that held no meaning whatsoever, not just a certain group, but it's an interesting point. I do agree that meaning is not inherent but is learned, but I'm rather of a constructionist myself.

Oh! You wanna freak out a baby? Hold a mirror up.
Just as an interesting side note, some research has shown that infants pick up patterns and simple statistical properties in human speech. As early as 1-2 months old, if I remember correctly.

Your essentially restating what Joe said at the top of the page, just speaking in broader terms.

Your game is not particularly fun. If you're interested in creating an interesting game, I would suggest taking some of that brainpower you're spending contemplating meaningnessless and read Huizinga's Homo Ludens.

Or make a new game. Either or.

But how can we produce a 'statement' of meaninglessness OR absurdity if the very concept of the 'statement' lies within the parameters of a philosophical debate? Surely if the 'statement' as you call it uses words, then it IS doomed to failure and what you asking of us is impossible.

Especially given the codes and conventions we are using now (not to mention the wider context of the medium we are using to hold this discussion, namely, a 'forum'), I can not see how your challenge to produce a 'statement' without meaning.

Can we start a new game now?

Seriously, GE, break out the parcheesi board and quit with the ill-defined philosophizing.

I should have just hijacked this thread with something like:

"Who likes apples?"

some time ago.

No. What I said is that everything in a computer is based on letters and numbers. And as we had allready disscused letters and numbers have meaning. So I ask you whatever your name is, how can meaninglessness (is that a word) be created on a machine based on meaning.

It can't.

I'm just reminising over the history of the Escapist.

-Back in the days when MGG was all but a developing troll. Sockpuppet and all. Now he's like... a legend or something.
-When HaliWali killed his first troll and claimed the title of Troll Slayer!
-The quote tower that was 10 miles high and 4 miles ling. Then the gods... mods destroyed it for it was a blashpemey to their name. (I started that one. YES I am rubbing all your noses in it)
-Remember the time when I was going to kill you, and you were like "No way"
-When the troll slaying epic quest adventure to fight MGG began. (And YES I started that one too. I'm not going to be graceful about this crap either!)
-That thread about using Portal quotes to talk about yor sex life. Grade A comedy.
-Memories

What fun we had together.

That bastard dingo Jesus! He will not rest until all the babies are dead, thus effecting genocide upon the human race. I bet he's in the coalition with one of them stingrays!

No, we may not start a new game now, my good friend. Why? The game has just started. Congratulations on playing.

At any rate, perhaps there is no universal meaninglessness? Shall we consider this first?

Why haven't you considered this first before making this thread? Supposing that there is none, this thread is useless.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with the concept of relative vs. absolute before delving into things. This isn't meant to sound condescending or offensive, by the way, so I'm sorry if my dismissal makes you feel bad, though I do not apologize for it.

If the game has just started and the starting question is meaninglessness in the universe, why didn't you ask us this from the outset? If your goal was to ascertain whether or not anything has no meaning within the universe, then why go through the charade of us trying to produce a 'statement'?

Seems kinda inefficient.
