try out different servers, some have better groups of people to talk to and some might have better maps to try as some maps can be boring and bland.

How it's not serious like MW/MW2. How the characters insult each other after kills. The art syle makes a nice change. Valve keep it fresh with new content. The community.

Those are some of the reasons why I like TF2 as a game.

Eh, I think I'm with you on this one.
I heard so much good stuff, played it on the 360 (Mainly before hearing the good stuff), then bought The Orange Box for PC as well...
I can't stand it.
I'll never play it again.
"Fun" isn't when someone sits outside a spawn point with a feth-load of weapons and spawn kills you because you're new.
If that is the kind of community I would have to see, then good riddance. I'll spend my money on games that I can enjoy.
At least I can enjoy the "Meet the Team" clips.

I remember when I first got it and played it I was disappointed at first. Took a break and came back to it a week later and got into it. My favorite thing about it is learning all the intricacies of the classes and learning tricks to use them well. Got to be a pretty damn good spy after a while, and felt achievement in doing so.

well... It's a game where you shoot from a first person perspective.
It is primarily focused on competitive multyplayer.
and it has absolutely no single player

so I can't see any reason which you should think it's fun

I have an Idea play the other games on the Orange Box and try to forget about Valve's worst game

If TF2 is Valve's worst game due to lack of single player, then what does that make Left 4 Dead, or (gasp!) Counter-Strike? Are they too terrible to even speak their names?

This thread title speaks to me. I want to love this game, but I just don't. I try to play it every now and again and I just cannot get hooked on it for the life of me. It feels like a closed community that if you have not been there for the start with your close-knit team of buddies to play with, then you will never get in to it.

This is a sentence that can legitimately be said after a round of TF2.

So me, a gun-toting soviet and an angry baseball fan were all pushing a bomb towards the enemy when suddenly an Australian man threw a jar of urine at us. Soon after a crazy Texan's machine-gun sentries started gunning us down but luckily our crazed German medic came out with his healing gun and made the Soviet invincible whilst he threw down a sandwich for me and the baseball fan to enjoy. My baseball loving friend then noticed an invisible Frenchman sneaking up on us so he hit a baseball at him which had him stunned so I could burn him to death with my hadouken of fire.

You sold?
Almost. :)

That was epic, and if i hadn't already bought the game, i would right after reading that.

OT:I'm not sure why i find it fun, i just do. Maybe its because of the items, the hats, the community, the depth of the characters and balance; there is truly a lot of things about that game i enjoy (Saxton Hale FTW!). I can always just hop on a server, and instantly be lost inside the game, and before i know it, I've been playing for over 3 hours.

I enjoy the gameplay. I don't find the community to be as great as advertised. The same old jokes over and over get tiresome (Hats this, hats that. Seriously, you're not funny). Trolls are pretty regular, people are constantly complaining about whatever weapon you happen to be using, and the new trading system has made the chat window extremely annoying. Buuut I'm here for the gameplay and not the chatter, so I don't get involved in the talking and it's immensely fun (and I generally hate FPS games).

Just find the game mode you like best. For me, it's Capture the Flag [footnote]least favorite: Payload[/footnote]. And find a class and play style that you enjoy. And it's a team-based game, play it as one.

OP, I was actually the same as you for quite a while. Then I found the spy. 12 hours, a few hundred backstabs, and innumerable real life trollfaces later, I was in love. Find a class that suits your personality. Use offline practice to mess around, then take what you learn there into online. Personally I love the spy because I've always been good with interpreting how people are going to react to various situations, and that has let me mindfuck hapless civilians for hours on end.

Left 4 Dead had Co op multyplayer
and I think Counter strike did too, I'm not sure I never played it
it makes them less bad than TF2

I just hate the whole competitive multyplayer thing
I have a friend who loves competitive multyplayer *namely Modern Warfare 2. and I asked him why it's so fun. and he said "Fun isn't the point of competitive multyplayer, it's for the challenges like sprinting 250 miles or disarming 300 enemy C4's."
So I don't think there is any real point to comp multyplayer. especially not if it's the only part of the game.
plus they've proven that they can knock single player out of the park with Half Life and Portal

all I'm saying is that I want to see Half Life 2 episode 3 before Left 3 Dead or Team Fortress 3
I would also like portal 2 but honestly how long do they have to work on those god damn HL2 episodes?

All the classes handles differently and the game has the most imported part of a FPS a health meter.
It doesn't hurt either that the game has good humour and an awesome community.

Feth-load, that a Space Marines reference? Personally I would've said Smeg-load...

Anywho I've found that while spawn-killing has happened (On the 360 version I was playing Dustbowl and the offensive team had mowed through us, established sentries and players right outside the spawn room and kept the game going well into overtime by getting someone to stand onn the last capture point until it was almost full then leaving and coming back when it was almost empty) it's quite rare if you play often and even when some wily sniper or heavy or something gets through (usually on the pc teams are gentlemenly enough to not do that) you can just gank 'em.

I know that everyone has personal tastes but disregarding the game due to the odd spawnkilling (I mean compare the numbers to something like call of duty) isn't giving it much of a chance.

I had the same problem after playing it on the PS3. Of course, that version is terrible, so I bought Team Fortress 2 on the PC for ten dollars or so thinking it would be much better. I tried to get into it for a very long time but just couldn't, so I gave up on it.

I enjoy it because it is easy to get into, as a newb, I was able to just jump in there as whatever class I felt like, and although I wouldn't always do well, I would consistently mediocre.
Also, its more easygoing than most games of CoD ive played

O_O

What maps were you on? Most simply have a barrier that keeps spawn campers out

I know what you mean, once you get past the unique graphics and humor it's really quite bad. All the classes are specially tailored to destroy other classes. It makes the game balanced, but just a glorified rock paper scissors. I also hated that you have to unlock the better weapons and hats that boost stats, giving veterans a large advantage over new players. I didn't like but could tolerate it in CoD because there it was simple to do. Everything but moving, dying, and missing got you closer to the new guns, but in TF2 you need to get the achievements which make it much more specific what you have to do to get them and therefore far more difficult, made even moreso when all my enemies have superior guns to me. This really doesn't encourage a good community I imagine which I already found to be god awful. No body ever seems to work together and everyone seems to be a dick. Here's two of the best examples of this problem I can remember.

Example one: As a medic, countless seriously wounded allies ran right past me without giving me time to heal them and without waiting for our other allies, right into the room guarded by three fully upgraded sentry guns. Then they complain that I didn't heal them.

example two: As a demoman I was the only one guarding the breifcase when a lone scout infiltrated the base. After spotting him and being unable to kill him (he just shot the sticky bombs and you can't hit them with the grenade launcher, remember rock paper scissors) I immediately called for backup, and tried to hold him at bay using an ammo dispenser an engineer left. I waited ten minutes for my fucking retard teamates to finally show up and kill him. Ten fucking minutes before my team apperently remembered that the briefcase determines who wins, not kills and finally did something. What the fuck was so important that they couldn't spare one or two guys to defend the most important thing in the game?

Last, while admittedly a minor complaint I don't like losing all your weapons when you lose and are made a defenseless target for the enemy. The other players are alreeady the same retarded, homophobic, twelve year olds every body complains about lurking in CoD,but now the game itself is insulting me for giving it a chance.
