This is a sentence that can legitimately be said after a round of TF2.

So me, a gun-toting soviet and an angry baseball fan were all pushing a bomb towards the enemy when suddenly an Australian man threw a jar of urine at us. Soon after a crazy Texan's machine-gun sentries started gunning us down but luckily our crazed German medic came out with his healing gun and made the Soviet invincible whilst he threw down a sandwich for me and the baseball fan to enjoy. My baseball loving friend then noticed an invisible Frenchman sneaking up on us so he hit a baseball at him which had him stunned so I could burn him to death with my hadouken of fire.

You sold?
Pretty much this. Also, a winner is you.

Easy. This is such a goofy and ridiculous FPS that I don't even give a crap if I die often.
Hell, dying can sometimes be really awesome. Like the Holy Mackerel!

OT: The humour, the core gameplay is solid. Classes and weapons are diverse. Maps are well designed. It's just good clean fun.

You need to find a 'fun' server, a community that brings people together under the name of cartony violence and funny hats. Ubercharged is an example, though it can be pretty packed during peek hours.

I'm in the same boat. I have tried so hard to like this game. I love the community and the humour and everything but I have serious trouble being able to sit down and play it and enjoy myself.
The only times I play it now is if one of my friends begs me too. I think the only thing that puts me off is how insanely fast the gameplay is. You die a LOT.

I guess it doesn't matter. We don't have to like the game, it's just a shame is all :(

I just went out and found a gaming community (other than this one) that had some TF2 servers and people who weren't asshats. Playing with people who are fun makes a huge difference.

Ooh, here's another important one. Find servers with rules that you like. I make a point of only playing on servers with rules against spawn camping. Because, as Greyfox has pointed out, being spawn camped is really, really not fun.

It is primarily focused on competitive multyplayer.
Er... Have you seen TF2 competative play? It's a league of difference from the pub games. Whilst you'd have 12 people on a pub side, maybe 2 of them working together, everyone else doing what they want. In a competative game it's 6 players, usually only 4 classes are used, set weapons, set maps... It's a different animal.

As it happens, Escapist is an example of that as well [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC]

No body ever seems to work together and everyone seems to be a dick. Here's two of the best examples of this problem I can remember.
Again, come and play a couple of rounds with us. If someone's being a dick and dragging the enjoyment (note: Not "dragging the skill level", the enjoyment) down, they'll be asked to quit it or get chucked out. We can and have done it before :)

I had the same problem after playing it on the PS3. Of course, that version is terrible, so I bought Team Fortress 2 on the PC for ten dollars or so thinking it would be much better. I tried to get into it for a very long time but just couldn't, so I gave up on it.
Again, come and play a few rounds with us, see which classes suit you and I'm sure we can find someone who can give you a few tips on starting to play. I personally play Heavy, but still ended up getting tips from one of our group on Demo play. 6 months ago I couldn't hit a thing, I'm better now.

I'm inviting everyone over to Escapist TF2, regardless of whether you've played and hated it, loved it or if you've not played. For me, a good 40% of the enjoyment is the community, and I can't think of a better community that those guys. I mean,

And that's not half it. Come over to The Escapist TF2 Group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] and play a couple of rounds with us.

Don't worry man, I kinda feel the same way.

I've played it quite a bit on my PC online and at some LAN parties because friends wanted me to.

I'm not sure what it is about the game, but there isn't really anything there that pulls me into the multiplayer. No real lasting benefits.

I'll stick with my Red Dead personally, but hey, to each his own.

I don?t play it all that much, I need to be in a certain mood to play such online games. But I find the whole thing rather amusing.
Anyway, I don?t really think this thread is really going to work with making you like it.

If you find it off putting other people saying why they like it isn?t going to change what you see as the off putting bits. All you can do is see if there is a way to change the off putting bits. For instance, if the problem is something like you not liking the people you happen to be playing with then the solution is finding a server with a regular community of people you like. If it?s a certain type of game mode, well there are other game modes and a number of user made ones. Maybe you just don?t like the game at all in which case it might be time to count your losses and move on.

Eh, I think I'm with you on this one.
I heard so much good stuff, played it on the 360 (Mainly before hearing the good stuff), then bought The Orange Box for PC as well...
I can't stand it.
I'll never play it again.
"Fun" isn't when someone sits outside a spawn point with a feth-load of weapons and spawn kills you because you're new.
If that is the kind of community I would have to see, then good riddance. I'll spend my money on games that I can enjoy.
At least I can enjoy the "Meet the Team" clips.
Feth-load, that a Space Marines reference? Personally I would've said Smeg-load...

Anywho I've found that while spawn-killing has happened (On the 360 version I was playing Dustbowl and the offensive team had mowed through us, established sentries and players right outside the spawn room and kept the game going well into overtime by getting someone to stand onn the last capture point until it was almost full then leaving and coming back when it was almost empty) it's quite rare if you play often and even when some wily sniper or heavy or something gets through (usually on the pc teams are gentlemenly enough to not do that) you can just gank 'em.

I know that everyone has personal tastes but disregarding the game due to the odd spawnkilling (I mean compare the numbers to something like call of duty) isn't giving it much of a chance.
Right universe definitely. Most known as the chosen swearword of the Tanith first and only.

Is the Server located in the USA? If so, does that mean that I will lag if I connect from Norway(I know that depends on my internet connection, but whatevs)?

Well I guess this is my chance to try and like it.
Try playing a few games with us [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] and see if we can change your mind. =)

We've got two. One in the UK and one in the USA.

Well the fun thing can be rather hard to explain thoroughly but most often im playing with several friends with teamspeak and that is one part of it (some one might want to use ingame talk but nobody in finnish servers does so)

Then there is the humor. I just love the cartoony style of characters and the weapons. It brings so much more to the game. Not many things can beat the feeling of charging to somebodys back with a frying pan and whacking them with hilarious sound effect.

I mostly play as spy and i find backstabbing that soldier that seems to check everyone around him after several attempts to be the most satisfying thing in a multiplayer game.

The game can also be very frustrating at times. Especially if there are several players that are waaayyy better that the rest of the server (comp demomen i am looking at you) or when there are 5 pyros on the enemy team.

There's actually a surprising number of ways to play TF2. Big maps, small maps, team size limits, highlander mode, not to mention the various game types and classes. Maybe you'd enjoy it if you tried to play as a different class on a server that limits team size to 8 or less. Or maybe you'd like the bigger servers that have teams of 16. Maybe you'd like payload maps, or maybe you'd prefer arena. Or CTF. Or capture point or king of the hill.

Or maybe even try some of the custom game types - there's an interesting reverse-CTF map that I've played that I thought was fun, and there's even a WarioWare type map that has minigames. And even if you just want to play the official game types, there's custom maps made for those all the time so you rarely run the risk of getting bored of the same maps over and over...unless you always play on the same server, but that really just boils down to user choice in that case.

Honestly, to anyone that's tried TF2 and not enjoyed it, I'd recommend experimenting with high/low populations, the different classes, and then a few different game types (including custom ones). If there's nothing you enjoy out of all that then the game isn't for you and that's totally fine - we all have different tastes. But I definitely think it's a game that has a niche for almost everyone if they try to find it.

What is this blashphemy i read?

OT: I dont think i actully add anything but play on a server with a lot of rules and nice admins. If that is a problem to lazy read all post :S.

Why i like it? Well the cartoonish style for once and that the classes taunt and insult each other when you dominate someone.

I know what you mean, once you get past the unique graphics and humor it's really quite bad. All the classes are specially tailored to destroy other classes. It makes the game balanced, but just a glorified rock paper scissors. I also hated that you have to unlock the better weapons and hats that boost stats, giving veterans a large advantage over new players. I didn't like but could tolerate it in CoD because there it was simple to do. Everything but moving, dying, and missing got you closer to the new guns, but in TF2 you need to get the achievements which make it much more specific what you have to do to get them and therefore far more difficult, made even moreso when all my enemies have superior guns to me. This really doesn't encourage a good community I imagine which I already found to be god awful. No body ever seems to work together and everyone seems to be a dick. Here's two of the best examples of this problem I can remember.

Example one: As a medic, countless seriously wounded allies ran right past me without giving me time to heal them and without waiting for our other allies, right into the room guarded by three fully upgraded sentry guns. Then they complain that I didn't heal them.

example two: As a demoman I was the only one guarding the breifcase when a lone scout infiltrated the base. After spotting him and being unable to kill him (he just shot the sticky bombs and you can't hit them with the grenade launcher, remember rock paper scissors) I immediately called for backup, and tried to hold him at bay using an ammo dispenser an engineer left. I waited ten minutes for my fucking retard teamates to finally show up and kill him. Ten fucking minutes before my team apperently remembered that the briefcase determines who wins, not kills and finally did something. What the fuck was so important that they couldn't spare one or two guys to defend the most important thing in the game?

Last, while admittedly a minor complaint I don't like losing all your weapons when you lose and are made a defenseless target for the enemy. The other players are alreeady the same retarded, homophobic, twelve year olds every body complains about lurking in CoD,but now the game itself is insulting me for giving it a chance.
Almost all the weapons are sidegrades with a few exceptions, but you can totally do just as well as a vet. If a veteran is beating you, it's not the item, it's that they're a vet. And the hats are purely cosmetic except for the handful released in the latest update, but even then those aren't really any boost, just another sidegrade. I think you may want to take a look again at the weapons and what they do, because you seem to think they're worth more than they are. Also, all items are random drops now, so if you play you'll get everything soon enough. Probably in less time than it'd take for you to get to the top in CoD4 or Battlefield.

And the community, well - each server has a different community with it. You run into some jerks and you run into some awesome people. It really just depends, but that's what happens when you have player-run servers.
