Because they're churning out the same game, over and over.

I like Battlefield, just because they have vehicles, so you can approach a problem from many different angles. Call of Duty is pretty damned dull.

Maybe I was brought up on those games that took 40+ hours just to get to the final boss, but a five-hour story mode does NOT cut the mustard with me.

Online multiplayer? No thanks. If I want to play against people, I'll invite some friends over, pop some popcorn and crack open a few beers.

It's just a terribly made game, in my eyes.

My issues stem from these:
1) Programming issues. I've been shot and killed through more than six feet of concrete, by a guy using an smg. Physically not possible, no matter the caliber of the smg, no matter whan perk is on, I've tried.

2) While Grenades are programmed to explode in all directions, if there's a tiny little ledge that is two inches above where your Semtex grenade sticks, the guy basically leaning over that edge like he's trying to look down the buildings shirt an ogle it's goodies will not take damage from the explosion because, evidently, an inch thick wooden wall is indestructible.

3) The RC-XD only explodes outwards, despite being nothing more than a brick of Semtex on wheels, meaning that if you're standing right on-top of enough explosive material to convert the entirety of your body mass into a fine red mist, you'll be completely unharmed.

4) While they work about 6 times out of 10, many of the perks are untrustworthy and their limitations are poorly defined. Such as me firing at a stack of crates roughly two feet thick and killing the guy crouching behind them, yet not being able to fire through the inch thick wooden walls of a building in the same map, despite the embarrassing amount of rounds I'd just fired into the bloody thing. OR the fact that I've shot-and-killed several dozen players that had appeared on my radar, despite the fact that they were quite clearly using the Ghost perk.

All in all, it's terribly made, and the designers should be ashamed of themselves for NOT NOTICING those, quite blatantly obvious, flaws in Beta testing.

Because it's just a cash cow? Seriously, any CoD-game since 4 was the same with slightly more refined multiplayer. It's called a patch, IW & Treyarch!
Seriously. Someone charging $60 for a series that's released in the same pattern as FIFA-games, with slightly more balanced multiplayer and a couple of more maps can't be doing it for anything but cash.
And you know, when the only difference are the maps, they still release 15 dollar map packs. That's just... wrong.

I think a lot of the flack seems to stem from multiplayer. First person shooters will always be the same gameplay wise, there isn't much you can do aside from adding vehicles, different weapons, etc.

That, and the fact that a lot of FPSs like to take place in the middle of wars. If we're going fro the past, and since just about all developers are based in the US, we're always going to be playing the US fighting the evil Nazi's and winning. If it's in the present, it's always going to be either Russians, or the middle East. If it's in the future, it's aliens. Or Koreans.

I hate flame wars as much as the next not-retarded gamer, but if you really want to get technical for a few seconds, CoD copied MoH. MoH came out on the PS1 in '99. The first CoD game came out in '03. This is why I find your statement redundant (No offence intended).

In my experience, it's because of a very small demographic that play CoD....those god damn twelve year olds who camp the fuck out of every damn map, destroy you every match by noob tubing you to death and instantly break their microphones when they start shrieking a MASSIVE chain of curse words at you when you break their kill streak and because of this TINY demograohic, everyone who hates CoD assumes the whole CoD playing community is one of them.

Now don't get me wrong I do enjoy myself a gd bit of CoD, but any one of my friends will say they don't like CoD due to the ppl who obsess over it.....like the players I just described above. You've all probably got different reasons for why so much hate is directed towards CoD, but this is mine. :)

Since Cod4, it's just been the same game with different maps and Graphics, and arguably better multiplayer.
Fixed that, because if it wasn't a mistake it made my brain hurt from stupidity.
Fixed that again, Cod1 and 2 were the kinda the same, but you could tell the difference, they felt like different games,

same With Cod3

But because of the popularity of MW, they are not changing from that formula, sure all COD's have been slightly similar, but after Cod 4 they are just clones of each other.

Plus the first 4 had story and meaning.

It's mainly due to the games becoming obvious, pumped out cash-grabs, rather than well-designed games and if they continue in this fashion they will jump the shark harder than Activision's other ex-cash cows, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero.

A lot of the haters of COD come from the following groups:

Group A: Still thinks the campaign is the primary selling point of a new Call of Duty game, and is consequently disappointed.

Group B: Sucks at competitive FPS games.

Group C: Has no interest in FPS games and hops on the hate bandwagon for the hell of it.

Group D: Hates Activision's business model, the hating of which is completely valid, but then associates that hate with the game itself.

Group E: Prefers another FPS to Call of Duty, a preference accompanied by the desire to shit on Call of Duty.

I could write a whole article about this, but I won't. Because the game ain't worth my time explaining why the game ain't worth my time. XD So, I'll just leave it at this: cash cow.

Incidentally, its turning more into a multiplayer game and less into a singleplayer. Now the singleplayer campaign can already be completed during a toilet break, so why even bother?

EDIT:

And this ^
really, you are saying yourself you are not contributing to the topic, well done.

also cash cow? its the same price as every other game that comes out. (DLC is optional by the way, so it doesnt count towards your argument (i dont even buy the DLC anymore)).

furthermore, you hate it because its more multi player than single player? big deal, thats a reason to simply not play it rather than hate it. lastly, 'a toilet break' how fucking long does it take you to go to the toilet???, please stop exaggerating, its not smart, and doesnt help your argument.

I don't know, to be quite honest. I personally think they're quite competent and have a better standard of execution than the majority of current console FPSs, gameplay wise. Mind you, I'm judging it from a different perspective than a lot of other people; I don't like FPS games on the whole, because they're just not my thing, so knowing there's an FPS series out there that I actually find playable and that can satisfy my shooty action movie urges for the year is pretty much all I expect from it, and it delivers that. And since I have no interest in multiplayer I'm completely ignorant of all the complaints regarding balance issues.

Sure, the games are flawed and I have issues with them, but I can be critical of a game and aware of its problems and still enjoy a game overall. If I hated every game that I saw an issue or flaw in, I wouldn't be a gamer, because I'd hate everything. I mean, for example, Black Ops story was shit, but it was also unintentionally hilarious, which kept me entertained. I laughed my ass off because the twist was so obvious and comically played out.

So, no, I don't think they're excellent games, or even necessarily good (CoD3 nearly killed my interest in shooters altogether), but I certainly don't think they're worth hating or raging over the way people do.

I specifically don't like it because it seems too fast paced for me, also, no "realistic" game should allow no scoping and quick scoping. I rather have to use real military tactics in my FPS's instead of ones that originated in games like Counter Strike. But, unfortunately for me, most FPS's have something you can abuse that breaks the game >.<

I don't necessarily hate it, but I am more of a fan towards Halo. I always compare CoD to Halo and CoD is always lacking at something. I'm just saying that CoD doesn't have as much time or effort put into it. But I will not blame the game studio for an under polished game when its publisher Activision gives them barely any time to make a game. You see there are 2 studios making CoD for Acivision, giving each studio 2 years to make a game. With games like Halo, they get 3 to 4 years on a game plus extra funding to update their servers and keep free content coming, the opposite of the CoD elite service being introduced. And just one more thing, I don't like CoD as much because a couple bullets kill you, when in Halo (being less realisic) you can take more bullets and not be completely screwed over the second you see the enemy. I think that just adds to the fun portion, while in CoD they want it to be more realistic while not focusing on the fun mechanics of the game.

It's close to the same game each time, it's boring, bland, linear (in how you do each mission not plot) not feeling of needed skill or tactics in MP or not as there are just so many decent first order strategies. The plot tends to be predicable and/or overly converulted. The jumping from war zone to war zone as a diffrent person from tiem to time doesn't add more than it removes. It lacks "zazz" it's not special or fun in my eyes; it just is.

On top of that the multiplayer is unappealing the heavily unlock and streak based system might be "cool" but it leads to grinding, camping and a rulett feel to MP. I want to be killed by a good shoot or the odd lucky one. Not soem dumb sky-aimbot or equaly stupid means. Sure it took look or skill to get out but it feels lame and shitty. Unlock based mulitplayer espcaliy with levels only annoys me greatly. It requires you to fart around for hour to get a load out that works for you with weapons added only to make they more needf to max out not for usefulness in none compeative games.

I've found that games that give you full right over weapons and ability are much more tactical and fun as every one is on the same field from the start. The learning curve is a bit nastier but the feel of oh wow I coudl pull the off next spawn or if i teak my load out so is much more fun than damn I couldn't have counted that if i wanted seeing as I dumped my unlocks in too X. Or he was one level higher.

Yes my flaws with CoD are comman in a lot of "CoD likes" and that why I disliek them ALL. CoD is also increaing stagntation but it's more on a publisher level than devleopers. Trying to push or a risky AAA standard game is next to impossable to indy and publishers are morlikey to fund a rehash of waht works than some thing shakey that even if it floped a tad might open dooes to totaly new ideas. Inevation is happing in rare AAA titles and in the indy and mod scene and if this carries on every one will catch on and be bored with gaming as it is.

Tl;DR
Unlock based MP is shite and the games are reak of cookie cutter slap-dasherie than real need to put out a gem.

I personally don't hate COD so much as I hate their publisher, Activision. I have played COD and enjoyed it for a while, but I am on a personal boycott of anything with the word "activision" on it. I do hate how Acti are trying to charge ridiculous sums of money for things that should and have historically been free. Battlefield BC 2 had free DLC maps if you had the online pass. COD charges $15 for map packs with only one or 2 original maps in them. It's a ripoff. And don't even get me started on this new "COD: Elit3".

I also hate how glitchy and broken the multiplayer is in the COD games. More often then not you get killed cheaply by people abusing bugs and exploits of the system, or get killed immediately after you respawn and have no chance to even defend yourself.

Overall though I don't hate the series, its just a mediocre at best shooter that does not in any way deserve its popularity ( at least after MW1). But I do hate their publisher and so will never be buying a COD game myself.

I don't bother myself with disliking Videogame franchises anymore, I used to, but then when I took a step back, I saw how silly it really is to do so. Now I just enjoy the games I love and don't actively pay any attention to or purchase games that I don't.

If I don't know a lot about a series or don't understand what draws people to it so fervently, I ask someone who enjoys the series why the enjoy it, in my experience peoples positive impressions of games are usually far more informative and interesting. I might still not be a hardcore Call of Duty guy, but now I've at least talked to enough people about the games that I can definitely see the appeal.

I like doing things this way, it gives me a better understanding and respect for the industry and the games, and the people who play them.

why do I hate it?
because it's not that it's a totally terrible game per se, it's the fact that it is so painfully mediocre yet wildly popular
especially since in my school (and most other schools i'm sure) the majority of people play almost exclusively CoD and perpetuate stereotypes for themselves and consequently the whole gaming community. they're not quiet about it either and non-gamers look down upon it and thus gaming as a whole
whether or not this is the case with most CoD gamers isn't relevant, as it's the vocal minority that ruins it

i'll occasionally play local multiplayer with friends because, again, it's not a TERRIBLE game and everything is more fun with friends, but that's about it

the franchise has seems like it's being manufactured by robots, spit out by a machine as they release a new one every year, not to mention gauging consumers with overpriced DLC which in itself should warrant one to be at least a little upset
its very presence (and especially its popularity) is counterintuitive to the "games are art" image many gamers and developers are trying to portray the industry as. Originality is something we need to make this image happen and CoD brings little to the table

just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good or that it has to be enjoyed by everyone

....or maybe all those reasons are void and i'm just hating because it's "cool" to.

People hate it because they don't like the same formulas to games most of the time. Which is strange considering how much people cry when developers change their game to something else. Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 are recent examples of this. In short, people are insane.
