Boy, I said BOY! , you have 20 years worth of backlogging to do, and you DO NOT buy Witcher 2 from Steam, you buy it from http://www.gog.com, I repeat http://www.gog.com.

I must say this newfangled SOLVE media is more to my liking than Captcha! - "spread the net," I will, magic image box.

If you want a PROP3R! PC experience then you don't go around playing the newest and shiniest games, but take a chance in the bogs of history, mods and independent developers.

SpaceChem, Love, Frozen Synapse, Wakfu, EVE Online, Master Of Orion 2, Civilization 4, Company of Heroes, Sacrifice, Homeworld, Freelancer or Freespace 2, Psychonauts, Day of the Tentacle, Return to Monkey Island (old series), Machinarium, Nethack, Beneath a Steel Sky, Gravity Bone, Spelunky have not been mentioned and that's just from one random txt file.

Also, don't dismiss browser games because most of them play, look or are sh*t.

You should definitely get Shogun 2. New standalone expansion this month promises to be the biggest expansion Creative Assembly has ever made and it looks awesome.

GoG.com is the sister company of CDPR, the developer of the Witcher series. Buying TW2 from GoG supports them more directly. You also get a good price and a lot of downloadable extras (soundtrack, trailers, etc.) that you don't get anywhere else.

EDIT: I should add that the extras are *additional* extras. You get a lot with the Steam download as well, which I guess you already have, and it should be just fine. If you decide to go back and try TW1 sometime, consider GoG as well.

The Elder Scrolls Series
Fallout ( Only played Fallout 3)
Dragon Age (only played on console but heard its better on PC)
Team Fortress 2
Empire Total War ( The Newer and older if you like it)
Bastion
Costume Quest
Mass effect Series
Guild Wars 2 9 When it comes out. it's only a 1 time fee)
Half life Series
Portal Series
Vampire: the Masquerade
Dungeons of Dredmore
Cave Story ( i think you can get it free, but support the developers)
Stacking
Rayman origins
Psychonauts
SS Street Fighter ( I heard it has a good number of people plaing)
Battlefield Series
Doom 3 (This is a MUST)

There are a lot more, but those are from the top of my head. Funny, I use to think all PC games were only porn games and strategy games. Pretty much every game that comes to consoles comes to PC except Japanese games, and even that is starting to change since Street Fighter X Tekken, Metal Gear Rising ( It's rising, damn it!), and Carpe Fulgur titles are coming to Steam.

By the way, download Steam and Good ol' Games immediately.

Get a total war game under your belt, strategy is one of few genre the computer has a massive advantage on.

I am sure that most of the current gen stuff has been mentioned but you may want to check out some old gaming goodness like Planescape Torment and Dues Ex. Both games are amazing in their narrative and the game play isn't bad as well, the graphics however are a bit dated and you may want to utilize mods to counteract this.

don't get most of the old games people are suggesting, most of them are completly outdated and just not as fun as you might remember them being.

I already bough Skyrim, redeemed my free copy of Portal 2, and have Starcraft II, just to give you an idea of genre's i like.
Quick list of the Steam games I greatly enjoyed/am enjoying:
Deus Ex - Human Revolution. Purists will recommend the original, which is fantastic, but its age may be off-putting. Just don't get Invisible War...

Killing Floor. Meant to be played multiplayer. FPS with classes and shooting of "we're-not-calling-them-zombies-but-they-totally-are".

Metro 2033. Currently playing after buying it during a sale. Intense as all hell and doesn't have the sandbox problem that Stalker does. Which is to say, in Metro you actually feel relevant rather than some random guy passing through a world where you don't really belong or have any place.

Zenoclash. First person brawler with weirdness and lots of cool things. I would explain, but it's a whole world and trying to explain one thing requires explaining others and you see the problem, yes?

Recettear: an item shops tale. I don't know you as a person. I don't know if you like adorableness. If you do, however, this game is an absolute must-have.

E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy. It's... umm... I... look, it's weird and sci-fi and kind of awesome, but also really problematic. I still have a free copy in my inventory, if you want it.

EDIT: And for the love of jolly Zanzibar, always check the Steam forums of a game before buying; even if you've played the demo. Sometimes games are really buggy or don't work with particular hardware. I've bought several games I can't play and only afterwards realized the forums basically consisted of page after page of other people pointing out the game doesn't work. I'm looking at you King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame.

Is this regional? My Captchas are just nonsensical little phrases like "get well" and "ride the subway". No advertising.

Also, don't be afraid to dip into PC gaming's colorful past, one of the big draws is the backward compatibility. Download ALL THE THINGS on www.gog.com.

u may have joined the PC crew, which im a proud member off, and yes games are generally superior on the PC, but u have to avoid MMORPG's, or as i like to call them Cash cow games. Consoles dont generally have to put up with these games.

Basically a MMO is always

Amazing CGI trailers
Reasonable Graphics
Bad community of angry people
Non existent story
Copy paste quests, Kill 10 wolfs, Kill 10 Chickens, Kill 5 elder wolf -_-
Expensive as hell (monthly fee such as WoW or micro transactions such as League of Legends)
All seem pretty good on face value but the more into the game u get the more things u will hate

As someone who has played lots these 2 stand out as being super bad

League of Legends
The Old Republic

Well, if you want to show the world how big your penPC's graphics card is, Crysis and Witcher 2. Also, those games are actually good, so you get to have fun AND look at pretty foliage!
I always found that weird, because I doubt anyone would pay a couple extra thousand dollars to get slightly prettier graphics, the main reason to get a PC is for the mods. I mean seriously, graphics are like say the difference between Blu-ray and DVD, sure for the first 10 seconds you notice a clear difference, but once an hour passes you don't care.

Rome: Total War (in my opinion the best in the series)
Age of empires/Age of Mythology
I remember Empire Earth 2 being quite good.
Galactic Civilizations 2 (quite epic)
Civilizations 4 or 5 (I preferred 4)

Oh, and Freelancer.

Seriously, get Freelancer.

NO!!! Red Alert 2 is superior!

Well, alright, they're both really good, I've just been playing RA2 recently a lot.

OT: Garrys Mod. I've killed so much time with that "game".

It is always nice to see people get smart.

I would recommend Baldur's Gate 2 as it is the best game ever to be released. Also don't concern yourself with trying to hate on consoles. Once you become a true member then the hate will come natural as you realise how much they ruin potentially good games.

Ohh and do try Dark messiah its an underrated jewel which deserves some more respect than it has gotten.

Giant pile of DRM. If you don't mind DRM and having to run Steam when you play games then its not that bad and their prices aren't too much more expensive then the alternatives.
I would suggest checking out GOG and GamersGate they tend to be the same price or less and they don't require an additional client to run their games. GOG also give lots of extras and GamersGate gives you store credit on every purchase, game rating, and review.
As far as what games to get if you like RPGs check out some of the older ones they tend to be a lot deeper and more open than the newer ones, Fallout 1&2, Arcanum, and Planescape: Torment.
If you are interested in historical grand strategy checkout some of Paradox's games like Europa Universalis 3 and Victoria 2.

Captcha: play hookey
I think its a suggestion.

Get Steam. 5 minutes later, you will have no money, and a lot of games.
Also keep an eye on Steam over Wednesdays (midweek madness sale)
And the Weekend (Weekend sale)

Steam will provide you with the bulk of your purchases I'm sure. It's only through Pure Xmas shopping madness that GAME (UK) was selling Skyrim for 19.99 on the PC and it was not a purchase I made on steam.

Look on Steam. They have a load of sales this weekend. Just looking at the specials list I'm seeing Psychonauts, Civilization 5 GOTY edition, Bioshock 1 and 2, the Stronghold Collection(RTS), and others.

If you're on PC, Steam is almost non-negotiable. There's just too many games for too cheap.
