Edit3: I'm putting this at the top because it's probably important to know going in. I apparently had an understanding of the term hardcore gamer not shared by many members of this community. So I use the term too specifically here. If you don't feel that this stuff applies to you, then I probably wasn't talking about you, and I'm sorry for misusing the term.[/edit]

I've been wondering for a while now why I can't identify with hardcore gamers. I spend an unhealthy amount of time playing games, and I get into some really obscure ones. Gaming is obviously my main hobby, so why don't I identify with the hardcore crowd?

Well, I was recently trying to have a conversation where the other person and myself were just not communicating somehow and suddenly it dawned on me. You're all graphics whores. I mean, that's a terrible term. Obviously there are other things you care about besides graphics, but back when I was your age that's what we called you. We weren't being particularly fair. You were the ones that were going to ruin gaming forever when I was your age. (Haha, I'm old now!)

Obviously it was the whole 'PCs are better because they have better graphics' thing that tipped me off, but there are other things as well. The average hardcore gamer's inability to tell the difference between complicated and interesting has always irked me. (Seriously, the words 'dumbing down' fill me with so much rage.) The way idolized games always seem to involve some sort of weird combination of twitch reflexes and spreadsheet maintenance. The way everyone talks about Dark Souls like it's hard. (I mean yeah I died quite a bit, but I never got stuck anywhere. It's just a game that requires you to know what you're doing. That's not the same as hard.)

Hehehe. Man, I never really could get worked up about the whole casual gamer thing, but now it's kind of filling me with a sadistic sort of glee. I'm kinda sorry for you, but mostly I just find the realization that gaming is moving on past the people that it went to after it left me to be amusing. I kinda want to get a smartphone so I can buy a dozen copies of Angry Birds now.

Sorry, I don't normally enjoy the unhappiness of others. I'm sure I'll get over it pretty quickly, but well... you are kinda the reason behind gaming veering away from my tastes over the last couple decades, so you'll have to forgive me (Or not. Up to you.) for enjoying this for a moment.

Edit: Sorry, I was a bit tired when I posted this. It came across as insulting the reader when I didn't really mean for that to happen. It's supposed to be addressed to just the most annoying of hardcore gamers, not everyone on the Escapist, and even then it's not supposed to be seriously insulting. You know I like you guys, right? That's why I post here, you know. This was just supposed to be an amusing observation to discuss. Sorry I failed to get my point across.

Edit2: Took the maniacal laugh out of the title. That was more than just a bit overboard. I'm leaving reference to it here because it seems dishonest to remove things without saying so.

Why would you assume we're all graphics whores? I know I'm not. Hell, I literally just bought Way of the Samurai 3, Knowing that it would have PS2 graphics. I, Mean I play Europa Unviersalis and Crusader Kings. Those are essentially just maps with small sprites. I buy games from Greydogsoftware, and they've made nothing but spredsheet games. I think it's a bit much think that everyone is a graphics whore. Maybe these gamers, like from 8-12, but even most of those just want to enjoy a GOOD game.

Most generalizations are incorrect. Even though that statement is the definition of irony it accurately represents what I'm trying to point out.

I'm primarily a PC gamer, but it's not uncommon to find me playing 8 or 16-bit console games. I personally draw the line at ASCII but I don't then go and find Dwarf Fortress players to belittle.

I'm not sure to who (whom?) your directing that to, the escapist or the other person you mentioned. But anyhow, I do like good graphics I'll admit but it's not a requirement for a good game. Aesthetics over graphics and all that jazz.

I'm very much enjoying swords and sworcery at the mo.

I... what?
What exactly are you saying and who are you directing it to?

I'm really confused.

Holy generalisation, Batman. Before going on a rant, why not give us a proper definition of hardcore and casual? Leaving aside the whole definition, I highly doubt that a lot of people, especially those who write and argue about games on forums, don't play a bit of both kind of games.

Gaming isn't "moving past" anyone. If you just took a second to open your eyes, you'll see that even to this day there are tons of different games being developed to cater to different sorts of people. Just because there's a big market for casual games right now doesn't mean that more serious and time-consuming games will die out.

I think you qualify as a "hardcore" gamer. Or rather you are the same type of hardcore gamer as most of us here, who resent the term. Perhaps a better term would be video game hobbyist or something. Unfortunately the term "hardcore" puts us in with the same category as the type of people you talk about.

I also agree with you about the whole "dumbing down" thing. You're game isn't better and you aren't a better gamer because you like overly complicated and obtuse games. Cutting out unnecessary crap and making the game easier to understand is not making it worse. A game that's more streamlined doesn't necessarily have less features. More features doesn't mean more quality either. And having your game played by more people because it's more understandable does not make it worse.

Some games have been dumbed down, but the majority of games that are accused of it are not at all.

You, yes you, specifically you.

Now, are you more or less confused?
I... but... I don't... but what if...

I have no idea what's going on.

I'm a PC gamer with a ridiculous set up that often plays games like Cave Story, Recettear or Minecraft.

I also play Metro 2033, Dark Souls and Crysis.

I think gaming elitism is ridiculous but I would go completely insane if all there was to play was Farmville and Angry Birds. I mean, they are okay for playing for five minutes on a train but gaming is my main hobby. I've played Skyrim (not that I'm saying it's difficult) for 285 hours. Can you imagine playing Angry Birds for that long :|

I'm pretty sure you took a wrong turn somewhere on the way to the annual flame bait meeting, you should always keep a look out for the 4chan sign, it will take you to the right place.

Hey! Just because I sleep with lots of different graphics doesn't mean you have the rights to call me a whore! Well, yes, maybe there is some money exchange but I assure you I'm not charging them, they just like me.

It's not actually possible to fail any harder than this thread, OP.

So, I guess that's...something. Good for you.

I think I'm a hardcore gamer. But do to my lack of a gaming PC I don't give a shit about graphics. Right now I'm absolutely in love with Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the world, and Earthbound.

I mean sure, once I get a gaming PC I'll crank settings up to high, but only because why would you put them to low?

As someone who considers himself a hardcore gamer, and has a passionate love of the Minecraft aesthetic I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit. Hell, I often find myself rallying against better graphics because I feel that they tend to discourage innovation. Obsession with graphics doesn't make you a hardcore gamer, it makes you too shallow to see past the surface.

Odd. The most "hardcore" game I can think of off the top of my head is Dwarf Fortress.
Here's a screenshot. [http://www.techsupportalert.com/files/images/dwarffortress.jpg]
Along those lines, we also have nethack.

Both waaay too hardcore for me. I'll stick to this [http://www.llstudents.org/sjudds/screenshot-page/scfa-screenshot-12.jpg] for my hardcore gaming needs.

As for interesting versus complicated... I suppose that would all be down to personal taste. I grew up on tabletop D20, so CRPGs tend to be dumbed-down by default. Man have they ever gotten far in that direction lately!

Graphics whores. Hah!

Oh, and why would you pay for angry birds when you can play the game it was based on [http://armorgames.com/play/3614/crush-the-castle/] for free?

Is this directed at someone, or at The Escapist in particular?

I think you may have confused us with a different gaming site, IGN perhaps?
