Odd. The most "hardcore" game I can think of off the top of my head is Dwarf Fortress. Here's a screenshot:

I mentioned my set up in The Secret World general chat when guys were measuring e penises and everyone went silent. The day after my male best mate bought a new 6 series graphics card. Men are weird.

He still doesn't get as good FPS as me. Bwahahaha.

Wait, wait, really? But when I signed up to be a gamer, I was told that the hive mind will soon be released to the public (they were still doing beta tests back then) and soon after, we'd all be assimilated and become one with the games. Are you telling me the Gamers Association lied to me? Shees, why do I even bother paying my membership fee.

Yeah both of my male grandparents were colourblind as was my Dad so I got a bit genetically screwed there.

OT: I think a lot of 'hardcore' games these days are the ones with the low graphics while the more mainstream triple A games go overboard and need 5 million in sales to make up cost...-.-

I'm a graphics whore and play games all day long and I hate the whole "hardcore gamer" idea. The very concept that something like "hardcore gaming" exists is utterly idiotic. AAA and Mainstream exists, casual games exist, but hardcore just doesn't. It's a stupid term thought up by stupid people to make themselves sound cooler - which, incidentally, is incredibly lame.

Also, as a proper graphics whore, 16-bit graphics can be as amazing as the newest tech demo. In fact, I never thought Crysis was all that special. Ok, maybe the engine can do some neat stuff, but boy do CryTek have no frickin idea what the hell to do with it once they built it. Aesthetics and level design, people, look it up. (The zero-g alien portion in C1 was kinda neat though).

Also... if "hardcore gamers" really were graphics whores... CoD wouldn't break sales records 5 times in a row. CoD's graphics are lame, but CoD is THE "hardcore" game. Apparently. It's difficult to define this nonsense because it's... well, utter nonsense!

Nonono. Hardcore is a vague term at best, there are different sorts of people who are really into games. Yet people into "hardcore" strategy games; "hardcore" first-person shooter players, and "hardcore" MMO ers share little in common. You just can't lump them all together, because there are different dynamics which push gamers to play.

I'd think someone is really superficial if they care too much about graphics, but then again for some people pushing their specs and maxing out their gaming capabilities is a part of their meta play style. For them, having the best graphics card and the most graphically superb games is part of being a pro gamer or maximising immersion.

I'm poorly at the moment, need an op but when I'm better I'm getting back to a college course that leads into a clerical job and I write games reviews on the side.

The way everyone talks about Dark Souls like it's hard. (I mean yeah I died quite a bit, but I never got stuck anywhere. It's just a game that requires you to know what you're doing. That's not the same as hard.)

Well from what I get from your posts, you liked the games like metroid where to advance you have to blow up a specific unmakred random point on the wall?
Because that's hard, I get stuck, but it is in no way fun or interesting to spend half an hour shooting at walls.

Also, one of the games typically associated with hardcore by people who actually mean it (ie, not 24/7 public server cod players) is league of legends. Another is dwarf fortress. You're telling me people who love those games are graphics whores?

This incredibly sweeping generalisation makes no sense.
Hell, the term hardcore barely makes any sense either.

I dunno, as someone who like new and old games alike, I would say that there is a little graphics whore in everybody, games are an artform and are judged on artistic merits.

Although I understand the what the OP means for some gamers, gameplay trumps graphics while others won't even look twice at a game that doen't have a certain so called realistic look like CoD (which isn't realistic as it's all grey filtered)

I think realistic graphics matter most in FPS games because they add to the immersion. Although I don't think it's worth buying a high end PC for but that Crysis frog looks tasty and not in a French way btw)

Plus the best HD 2D games out there like the stuff CAVE Co puts out gives me a woody as much as any realistic game
