I left my girlfriend so I would never have to play another JRPG...

You're the same tosser as the one who hated on Halo? That wasn't good enough for you? You thought 'Hey, let's hate on an entire genre?'
I find your insufferable smugness quite annoying, sir. Perhaps you're making valid points and perhaps not, it's hard to discern them in the swirling, shapeless mass of pure misplaced ego.
one game wasnt enough, hes now going at an entire sub-genre
i dont love all jrpgs, but they do their own thing well, so you cant say theyre bad, and sometimes the plots are original and the characters are good. in FF8, the romance was quite funny as well as heartwarming

I enjoyed FFVIII quite a lot actually. Maybe the romance makes the corset wearing girl in me all giddy and excited, but the characters were endearing and goddamn if the idea of a 4 Dimensional villain isn't original.[/quote]
damn you, now i will have to like you for liking FF8! managed to beat it, the last boss took about half an hour. for one(four) boss(es)!

Are you just trolling now or do you honestly believe having an art degree means you ddon't need to back up you statements?

If you do want to do anything other than annoy I'll ask the question I asked on the last page. Why do you feel the RPG is an outdated medium of storytelling?

You're first post in this thread actually made me respect you, please don't ruin it by replacing logic with elitism.

I haven't seen anything like that in a JRPG (Not bashing them, they just aren't for me).
That means you have a fundamental disagreement with the OP, you realize. He believes they are objectively terrible games.
Well I, too, think they are terrible, but I think a lot of things are stupid that people like. But that doesn't mean they can't like them, right? When it comes to games: I may not like them, but live and let play.

And this hilarious idea that we all subconsciously like the same things (One of his post-OP remarks) is ridiculous and unprovable (And hilarious). I hate 99% of alcohol related drinks I've ever had (Can't stand the taste). I hate smoking. I can't stand JRPGs. I don't like cats. I think Ben Affleck has the acting ability of a broken sandal.

These are all things people may, and do, disagree with me on, world wide.
The fact that archetypes can (And do) exist across nations, languages, and peoples says more, to me, about the international applications of psychology for humanity, rather then suggest a universal subconscious where we all enjoy the same things.

Get a degree in Comparative Literature and come back.
I don't hate myself that much.
Then try Cultural Anthropology, English, General Studies, Philosophy, or a language. Something that qualifies you to speak on literature.

Seriously, when you claimed to have an art degree and then brought up "story archetypes that crossed nations and ethnic groups," I started laughing hard enough to choke. I can't imagine what you were studying earning that degree, but I'm guessing it was either totally modern art, or extremely narrowly focused cultural art.

What a nice way to express your anger for losing your girlfriend.
No, I'm just kidding, you have some very good points.
I never finish a JRPG because I just stop caring after 10 hours, I just don't care about getting new characters or weapons or a new area or advancing trough the story line, because JRPG's are not immersive enough for me because I can't relate to the characters.
In WRPG's I can relate to the character which makes me care if he gets stronger, meets someone, explores a new area etc.
That's the big difference for me.

See, this right here is a great post. And hell I agree with you on most counts. They are very different, but one is better because the mechanical and story components needed to drive it are much better done. A good JRPG is about characters, the problem is that the writers of JRPGs have forgotten how to tell a story in which the characters are lovable and endearing. Every JRPG still feels like an early 90's anime. JRPGs have become more about artistic spectacle and less about characters, and that's my problem with them. All the art direction in the world wont help when your main character is a contemptible shell of a person.
I dunno, I see a WRPG character as much more of a shell of a person. Pretty rarely in good JRPGs do you find a character who's arbitrary, someone without a deep backstory, complex motivations, and complicated interactions with other characters. Not every character has to be lovable or endearing to make a good story. The difference is in whether the character has a personality in and of himself, or whether the player has to make it up.

But, I've not yet played a non-Bioware Western RPG that I didn't get bored and give up on. I don't give half a rat's ass about exploration and an open world on which I can leave my mark. I don't want to tell "me in a fantastic setting", I either want to tell "me in a realistic setting" or "someone else in a fantastic setting".

The story and mechanical elements of Western RPGs are only "better" for the type of person who likes them more. I despise the "blank slate" characters. I loathe a game designer who seems to say "I'm going to leave it up to you to make up most of the game". If I wanted to make up a character, and make up the adventures he'll go on, I'd just get some action figures, and save myself sixty dollars.

Good, I'm glad I wasn't the only one to notice and laugh at that remark.

And don't worry, I do agree. Personal taste accounts for a lot, so I don't take offense at your dislike of JRPGs and our feline lords and masters kitties...and I agree with you on the alcohol. Japanese plum wine and sweet sake are the only things I've found that didn't nauseate me... >_>

I read it all, you're welcome.

1) I agree with you on many points, especially exploration.
2) Wow, an art degree. You're so amazing!
3) Kind of Trollish, but at least you're making a real topic.

A simple /sarcasm would avoid a lot of the hate you are getting for the Art Degree thing.
If I have to spell out sarcasm for you, you're too stupid to understand sarcasm. That's the point of sarcasm, that you don't explicitly tell people you're joking.

WOW that was a lot to read, and yes you do have some good points, but it all depends on opinion whether the genre is dead or not, for example a lot of people think that Kingdom Hearts killed the genre, but i quite like the series and have finished all four current releases 2 or three times each. Another series that i like is Final Fantasy, and yes i know that the are getting ridiculous with the number of titles, but even those have some good games, for example FFVII, Dirge OF Cerberus FFVII, FFX, FFX-2, Disidia FF (i know that isn't really a JRPG but is based on them), so don't discount the JRPG for anyone who hasn't played them, play some of them and formulate your own opinion.

Suikoden Tierkreis is pretty good too

I have no opinion on JRPGs because I never played one, and I dont judge what I dont know. On another hand, I have played many Western RPGs, and like most of them.

Oh, not him again. How long do you think it will take untill one of his threads get him banned? He called halo art and now he's ripping on rpgs, this is just a slightly intelligent fratboy. You wave your art degree like it's a fucking police badge, it doesn't make your opinion any more relevant so stop it. Jesus christ I have only seen this guy twice and he already pisses me the fuck off.
