For my first one that'll be Fallout 3. All of my friends keep telling me how awesome it is and how they love it, but I just couldn't get into it. Not sure why exactly. Going to try giving it another shot though, if only because I recently got the GOTYE from Amazon, so hopefully that goes well.

Pretty much the same thing with Dragon Age: Origins, just couldn't do it. Will not be trying that one again though.

You should maybe try KOTOR...although it has a similar combat system to Dragon Age...but it is my personal favourite RPG because the story is fantastic and I much prefer sci-fi to medieval (I still like medieval themed games but I like sci-fi more).

Even then that game took me a bit to get into...the first half hour or so was bad and I didn't really understand the controls. After that though I understood the controls and was so immersed in the world that I decided to put it down because I was hungry...I had played the game for 8 and a half hours straight (never have I done that before or since) and still hadn't even half-finished the tutorial planet (not because it was long but because I just kept finding stuff to do).

Give it a go and if you don't like the combat then thats the reason you don't like Dragon Age either...the combat is pretty strange but if you give it a chance it becomes fun.
Do I need KOTOR to enjoy KOTOR2? I'd rather skip straight to the game developed by Obsidian. I consider them far better story-tellers than pretty much anybody else in gaming atm.

If you think Dragon Age 'sucked' I wouldn't recommend either of them, the combat system is the same and it's based on D20 just like Neverwinter Nights. kotor 2 uses a lot of context from 1 but it's sadly extremely plagued by a mary sue syndrome with the main character and a few disagreements with canon, I think it's quite a bit below kotor but still a good game. If you wanted to fully enjoy and understand both games I'd recommend reading Tales of the Jedi: Knights of the old Republic which is where they were based in the first place, the games being what happens right after the comics.

OT - Well... Can't really name a game I wanted to like but didn't, I thought Fallout 2 had a very slow start that could have been better but the game's still awesome overall. If there's a genre I kinda wanted to like I guess it's JRPG's, since Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger few if any has managed to be decent at all for me. But it's more "I used to like it and it utterly sucks now."

Does anyone else find that a lot of the posts in this thread come off as rather... mean spirited?

And now I've said that, I guess I can't ***** about that one game for fear of being a hypocrit.

Suffice to say, I think your favourite game is a worthless piece of shit and I resent you for liking it. So there.
I have to say this is the first post on the escapist that has made me laugh aloud in a long time, well done!

Tomb Raider. The new one, that is. I tried SO hard to like this game, because I really wanted a Tomb Raider where Lara isn't tiger murdering bimbo to be awesome. Such a shame that the game is nothing but one big quick time event with some narration tacked on. Fo shame!

Bioshock. Played through it twice because I was convinced I must have just somehow missed the genius of it the first time through, but just couldn't find it. Having non-regenerating health is fine, but not when it's combined with having about the same maximum health as CoD on veteran (virtually none) especially with basic enemies that can take more small arms fire than most armored vehicles. Plasmids were horrifically situational at best and completely useless at worst. Plot was dull and predictable (the only thing I didn't predict was the mind control, the betrayal and Fontaine thing I figured out immediately). The only thing I really liked was the atmosphere, but I play games for more than that, like gameplay. Worst five dollars I ever spent, should've bought some candy bars. Tried out Infinite at a friends house though, which is far superior, limited weapon handling non-withstanding.

Soooooo many, so I'm not going to try and name them all. But here's a few:

1. GTAIV. I've given this game more chances than it deserved, and I intend to give it a few more. But what a piece of shit. I can't play a single minute of that game without thinking "I wish I was playing Saints Row."

2. Bastion. I'm currently working on my latest effort to convince myself this game is as fun as the hype says it is. And it's not bad. I guess I just don't see what the big deal is.

3. Guacamelee. I wanted to love this game because of the whole "Metroidvania" thing (which is grossly overstated). And for a little while I did. But the ultra-steep and sudden difficulty spike late in the game means I won't be finishing, and that really annoys me, so now I'm bitter about the game.

Brutal Legend. I love everything about the game (the style, the entire idea of it, Jack Black, etc.), but the actual gameplay sucks a fat one.
Yes, I agree with you on this. Not only that, the writing ad cutscenes were top notch, and I wanted to continue to see more of it, but I just....couldn't...

For me its Dragon Age 2, I had so much hope for that game, it's the only game I ever preordered. I loved Dragon Age: Origins, it may have had the old BioWare go to X places and complete objectives to advance to next stage of the game mechanic, but any game where I can play all the way through and want to start over again is a winner for me. Then came DA2, combat replaced by button mashing, every location in the game used in the first couple of hours then endlessly recycled, and then the god-awful ending. I mean, come on, yeah both factions can be essentially evil if thats the way the developers want to go, but to change the series of events so that whichever side you pick turns out to be that much more evil than the other side is just a dick-move. I completed the game once and unlike its predecessor, not only did i not dive into a replay, but i havent even picked it up since.

Yeah... Guild Wars 2 :(

The beta's and hype left me completely burnt out by the time the game was released, like a flaccid penis right after a wank. I couldn't get myself to play the game for longer than a month. It's a real shame. The fuzzy feeling I got from playing the first Guild Wars was completely gone for me. Hopefully they rethink their plan of not making expansions.
I too really enjoyed Guild Wars 2 until I got to the end game and realised the only thing you could do is grind for a legendary.

That meant either getting REALLY lucky or amassing an incredible amount of wealth. My girlfriend still plays it but I can't bring myself to pick it up again. I actually wish the game had the holy trinity (tank, heal, damage/CC) to make the instances more engaging.

Any Final Fantasy game ever (yes I've tried every single one that everybody says is the best, which is primarily six and seven, apparently). I just can't get into them, and I hate the combat. If I play turn-based combat, I prefer it to be more like KotOR. The stories weren't particularly gripping either, though to be fair I've never gotten past half of a Final Fantasy game.

Grand Theft Auto 4 tried as hard as I could to get in to it but it just seemed to realistic for a Grand Theft Auto game.

Dark Cloud 1 and 2 was the other way around loved the game but the game must not been into me sense a total of 6 copies broke on me.

Wow, SO MUCH Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I want to love that game SOOOOOO BAAAAADDDD! From the little I've played, I'm really liking the story, the atmosphere, the tone, and the characters, not to mention the B-E-A-U-TIFUL amber and black color scheme.

But every time I try to get back into it, the gameplay always completely stonewalls me. I just can't enjoy that kind of cruel, unforgiving, trial-and-error gameplay.

Whoo boy, Borderlands 1 and 2. I must've borrowed or rented the first about 5 times. Even played it with my best bro, and neither of us liked it much, we couldn't get into it at all. That's really saying something. I tried Borderlands 2 back in March. It was better, but still didn't grab me. I just don't get the hype behind the game. They're not bad by any means though. I just don't get why people like them so much personally.

Almost every game since Duke Nukem Forever has let me down, including ET:Quake Wars, Battlefield 3, Diablo III, XCOM:EU, The Cave. Several dozen games I've completely refused to purchase. Now that I think about it, a large majority of games since the year 2000 have been awful in my opinion. I might be too old to appreciate current video games. Most of it is mind-numbingly monotonous hand holding crap.

Skyrim, I've a computer that runs it. I bought it in a steam sale before I had my laptop because I knew I'd install it. I just don't like it. The story seams non existent, the combat is lame but I feel like I should like it. I did pay more money then I usually pay for a game.

Skyrim you beautiful waste of money you.

KOTOR 2

I bought the game last fall and was ecstatic at first. I'd heard all about the bugs and glitches that had originally made the game a cluster f*** but the final modification package that cleared all the bugs up was downloadable and so I did that and jumped in...

Only to find myself wandering around in circles.

Seriously, the game isn't as straight forward as KOTOR I was. I had to look up walk-throughs to get out of situations time and again because I missed some particular part here or there. Given that I'm the type of player who went through KOTOR I about 50 times so I could milk any and every bit of play from it I'm not exactly given to missing leads.

Finally I just gave up. I'd made it to something like 23rd level and I'm basically wandering around in circles trying to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do. And this is after leaving one or two planets/areas behind because I got fed up trying to figure out what I was supposed to do there.

I suppose that I'll go back and play it again, but I'm guessing that I'm not even half way through the game--but I'm 23rd level? What the heck?

Oblivion. One of my friends was playing it and I thought it looked pretty cool. I read up on it, and decided to purchase.
As much as I wanted to, I just couldn't get into it.

I was also really excited about Fallout 3. I've started it maybe a dozen times but so far haven't managed to play long enough to get past that first town with the bomb in the centre.

Whenever somebody raved about a Bethesda game I just tuned out after that, soured by my Oblivion and Fallout 3 experience. Recently though I was compelled to give Skyrim a go (that and it was also $20) which I love.

Oblivion. I just couldn't ever deal with the inconsistent levels+level scaling.

Also I'm currently beating my head against Space Pirates and Zombies, which has a lovely brick wall difficulty curve I can't seem to get past.

Endless Space. I love the style, I love how you can personally customize your ships and fleets to give yourself an edge in combat, I love how the space battles are more than just two sides bashing each other over the head in a quick animation, and the UI is probably one of the best in the 4X genre.

That being said, the game is way too hard to play. I've played over a dozen matches of it and cannot get even close to beating it, and that's even after bumping the difficulty down to the level where "the enemy thinks the Maginot Line was a great idea". Whoever programmed that game's AI advantages needs to go back and rebuild it from scratch because the AI factions seem to have every advantage going for them even when it makes no sense at all. They ignore every negative happiness modifier, even if it would effectively be a mass depression that would otherwise bring their entire economy down to their knees. You could have twice the star systems and economy power as they do, yet they can still build 5 times the number of fleets as you canin a fraction of your time. Heck, I read the game's recommended play manual several times over and done everything I can to increase the efficiency regarding my race's specific win condition, and somehow other races beat me to the finish line by 50 turns or more.

It's frankly disheartening. I mean it's not like I'm inexperienced with 4X games. I've clocked in over 200 hours with Civ 5 and regularly win at it, yet I simply cannot make any headway with Endless Space. It makes me think that I wasted my money getting the game, because a no win situation is no fun at all.
I actually consider Endless Space to be the ONLY game I have ever wasted money on. Things like "A game of dwarves" cost so little and got some enjoyment so I do not really care.

Endless space was A) Expensive and B) Boring. Everything that it does well, Galactic Civilizations 2 does better, bar the combat, and that game is ancient. I have won one game. That was on an incredibly small star system where I locked down the ways across from one system to the other ASAP as it was the only way I could stand a fucking chance at building up. Essentially, I have only won by rushing the AI on the easiest difficulty setting.

But I have more gripes with the game then the difficulty of the AI. The tech tree makes me want to eat my own chin. GalCiv2 had an AWESOME tech tree. Endless Space does not.

Other then Endless Space (Which covers this neatly. As you can see, I love Gal Civ 2 and I really wanted to love Endless Space.), Sins of a Solar Empire falls in here. I wanted to love it. I really did. But somehow it felt SLOWER then its turn based brethren. Yeah, the battles look AWESOME at first. But after a while? It gets meh.

Mass Effect also comes in here. With one, I found the gameplay so dull that I simply could not play it. With three? Two things happened. One, the same problem with the game play, I just found it dull. Two: I screwed up with the character creator and only noticed an hour in my guys chin entered the room about a minute before he did and he looked like he had been beaten with a wrench. Never start games drunk kiddies.

Plus I just CBA to restart after the whole Wrench Face Man.
