I'm going to stick to traditional stuff (avoiding the urge to create an awesome hybrid) and say a shapeshifter because...

I would go with the Rakshasa, at least the D&D version I am familiar with. Then you don't have to be some tragic monster who hides in a cave. You could live life as a wealthy, debaucherous human. Who can also read thoughts and control people.

Well, mainly because of that~! Though I'd not want the thought reading, I imagine that'd be stressful. I'd also keep the control as a get-out-of-serious-trouble ability. The main thing for me is that I could keep my current life as a shapeshifter and just spice things up when the time calls for it. Fly like a bird, run like a jaguar and cosplay like a boss be a master of disguise - the possibilities~!

I'd be an entity that invades the minds of people, becoming an irresistible figment of their imagination. I can be a waking nightmare that never gives you respite and that no one else can rescue you from or mass illusions that skew your view of what is real and what is not.

By day, I haunt you trough delusions and surreal imaginings. At night I make your dreams my playground, and torment you with horrific nightmares indistinguishable to reality. I eventually wear down my victim to the point of breakdown, where they are unable to tell what is and isn't real, at which point I manifest into a very real form and steal the life from them, leaving them a lifeless husk.

Yeah, essentially I'm a monster that induces psychosis.

My manifested form is like a shade, no defining features beyond a creeping mass that absorbs light.

Wendingo, a cannibalistic malevolent spirit. It comes from Algonquin Native American Indian mythology.

i wouldn't eat (i'd need to get hungry, and have a non-soapy body, and as time has no meaning, and soap doesn't have a stomach...), but i'd have my super-special tactic (it's fine, you'll see) to infiltrate the human world... the bathromms of women, to be more precise, via my own bath-soap!

If I were to be a monster I would be either a ghost (ala Supernatural series), a vampire (ala Blade or Hellsing), or a humanoid dragon capable of breathing fire and flight.

Should I become a one of the aforementioned creatures, I would take a different role to the default roles of these creatures (i.e. haunt properties, hunting humans, guarding treasure, etc.) or even the mainstream "modernization" of these creatures (you know what the f*** I'm talking about so there's no need to mention it!).

I would want to be a vigilante to dish out justice against criminals and injustice in the world in the most frightening and grotesque manner (cus' I'm a monster, right?), making them fear something that "isn't" real and hard for them to understand.
