I'm not interested in Christmas

I'm considering saying I'm of a religion that doesn't celebrate Christmas until I have a stable career because the crushing guilt I feel around Christmas time when I can't afford the presents I feel I need to buy people.

I also feel terrible - no matter how much I spend - on presents if I have a girlfriend on Christmas, because it never feels like I've given enough.

Honestly, I love what Christmas is supposed to be about, but the pressure is soul-destroying.

The way I see it. Christmas is a mixture of family and/or close friend parties with gift exchanging.

I like the social get-togethers. once you get passed the stigmata that Christmas is magical it gets enjoyable. Unless your family actually sucks and/or your friends are terribl, then you have every right to hate Christmas.

The media coverage it gets is appaling (at least here in Australia), with a number of terrible christmas specials being played on TV. All of this is extremely off-putting.

The thing that disgusts annoys me the most is the spoilt children. A lot of these kids get a ridiculous number of presents, when neither them or their families understand what christmas is actaully about. It all just seems like another excuse to receive gifts, and another excuse of a holiday.

I'm not saying we should get rid of Christmas once and for all, i just don't like what it has become, and it just doesn't excite or interest me at all.

So am i the only one feeling this way?

EDIT: what im saying is that it seems to be too much about the gifts now. and the media ruin it.

.........ok first off if your watching TV on christmas your doing it wrong. I never even turn my TV on christmas day and the days leading up to it tend to get really good old movies because they are all family friendly(IE:all the disney movies,its a wordfull life ecst...)as four the "spoiled" children, all i can say is thats only a small few. christmas is the one time of the year were kids actually have a chance to get what they've wanted all year because parents tend to save up and buy their gifts 3 or 4 months in advance. So what im trying to say i guess is celebrate the holiday in your own way and just ignore people i mean its is the time of giveing just give the rest of us patience.

There's multiple reasons to like and hate Christmas.

Love:

-After a shitty year, it's nice to have a few days off to do actually nothing.
-Dude, Free food and left overs.
-With all the crappy christmas special, you get a few good ones. Case in point: Die hard.
-Family is nice if you haven't seen a few of them in a long while.
-Christmas parties with friends.
-Christmas themed drinks.
-EGGNOG
- Being a student at university, I rarely have the chance to celebrate my birthday since it's the 17th and there's still exams at that time of year. Christmas is nice to have to make me feel better.

Mixed feelings:

-Presents are a bit of a love/hate relationship. My dad and mom always ask what I need and not what I want. I'm probably not going to get the "Back to the future" trilogy on DVD because they don't see the point of it. I'm never going to get something game related. Although, I did have a coffee machine and toaster last year.


Hate:

-Every time that I get clothes, I'm depressed. There's nothing more that kills my hopes than having socks. I consider socks to be a christmas insult.
-The annual visit to the church. I hate hearing those babies cry for an entire hour.
-The annual comment that I need to get to the gym after christmas.

Instead of being one of those douchey guys that you see in a beatnik coffee house, where they do poetry readings on Tuesdays and Fridays, listening to there Ipods and surfing on Ipads or going on about corporate America ... be happy!

Jesus, for one fucking day of the year stop acting like you have the shittest life 9'cos you don't!) and just forget about the huge debt you have/ relationship problems/ you have a dead end or no job and just tuck into some great food, while catching up with family members you never see!

I wish I could have one those magical christmas's you see on TV where after a choatic day they have a nice family meal with no arguments but no, I spend it alone except for 4 hours when I have a lukewarm meal in a pub with meat so think you could blow a hole through it that costs 10 times more than it should do!

Forget how tacky, cheesy and camp it all is and get on with it .... or if you're Corey Taylor take this stance! (Actually I just wanted to post this song 'cos it's awesome!)

I belong to one of those weird families where, not only do we all get along, we actually all like each other pretty well. It helps a lot that we have no ugly divorces, no raging alcoholics, nothing to really mess things up. I am the big fuckup in my family and the worst thing I ever did was not finish college. I know these days it's tremendously unfashionable to have a well-adjusted nuclear family who you actually care for but there you have it.

I loathe the commercialism of Christmas. The blinky lights, the gaudy lawn ornaments, the nails-on-a-chalkboard music, the nine inch stack of catalogs I get from every company under the sun, the hype hype hype telling us the more we spend the more we care....yeah, that can all take a flying leap into Kiss-My-Ass Canyon and fuck itself raw on the way down.

Don't much care for the "put Christ back in Christmas" crowd neither. I've never researched this, but my understanding is Christmas is not a Christian holiday. It derives from a pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In an attempt to stamp out pagan ritual and promote Christianity, a Roman emperor declared the day to be about Christ. Jesus -- whether dead, alive, newborn, or zombie -- doesn't have any more proper a place in the day than any other figure of myth. It might be tradition, but it's also nothing more than the word of some dead Italian guy.

But Christmas morning at my folks' house -- fire in the fireplace, laughing over mountains of French toast, Nat King Cole on the stereo, all of us sitting around the tree together -- everyone should have days like that.

Christmas saturation is no different in the states than it is in Australia. Christmas music fills the radio the day after Thanksgiving here, which is the last Friday of every November. Christmas specials fill the air all the time, with some specials being put on 24 hour loops throughout Christmas day. The commercialism is rampant, with people often getting trampled and beaten up in stores trying to fight crowds to get popular toys and other stuff on sale. The little nieces and nephews and cousins in my family are given a mountain of presents to unwrap, which they do at the speed of a starved hyena. It's a ridiculous holiday, but I still love the hell out of it.

To me, Christmas is both about the gifts and the time together as a family. I've always loved getting oddball gifts for my friends and family. I've been brought up to be generous, and Christmas lets me go nuts with it.
At the same time, Christmas remains the one time of year when my family, strewn across the country, comes back to my grandparents' tiny old house to visit, eat some great food and get drunk and play card games. I love seeing them all, and by proxy the holiday that makes it possible.

I'm not really sure the "True Meaning of Christmas" necessarily applies to the holiday anymore. I know that it is primarily to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but the holiday has become so secular that non-Christians still celebrate the holiday all the same. My parents, who are proud Buddhists (Don't ask) as well as my proclaimed atheist aunt and uncle all take Christmas with the same amount of bravado that anyone else does. Hell, even the Japanese celebrate the holiday, with less than one percent of their population being Christian...

For whatever reason, you don't like Christmas. That's fine by me, everyone can't enjoy everything. If I may say, perhaps try looking past the commercial and overexposed TV aspects of it, and take it for what it is, a holiday where you can spend time with family and maybe give something nice to someone special. A saccharin-sweet mentality to be sure, but not a bad one.

I admit that even though I am not materialistic, and all about giving for Christmas... getting socks is an insult. I mean, out of all the gifts, socks are probably the only clothing that really isn't desired to get on a holiday ever. I enjoy cloths, I like jackets.. but give me socks and I can't put on a smile I'm sorry.

At least with socks the person is trying to keep your feet warm as shower kits are by far the worst. Then the person is saying that you are a smelly bastard and probably need the shower gel.

Everything is about material possessions. While in terms of business Christmas is just another holiday and a chance to cash in, it's really about having this feeling of love for everything and everyone you hold dear. A magical time of year. I mean, you can complain about it being about gifts, but if you personally love Christmas on a deeper level then why do you let these trivial things bother you?

I understand your point, commercialism and all that jazz... but seriously? Really? You can't get over the fact that half the world, and mostly the western half, is christian or celebrates christmas, the rules of supply and demand effect tv.

I get sick and tired of seeing coverage of the royal wedding, we (americans) went through a lot to get away from that and there we are eating up every bit of info. I also dislike the Twilight series but I stand it being shoved down my throat for years because it is what's popular.

Thanks for the laugh, but ritualized happiness through materialism is just as bad.

Because having family over, going out with friends or just generally getting together with people and having a good time is just terrible! People just shouldn't celebrate things period! And heaven forbid I give my mother a box of chocolates or something!

Next year I think I'll just sit alone in my apartment! that will be better for me than all this putrid materialism!

It's not nearly as big a deal to me as it was when I was a kid, but I just like giving people things because it makes them happy (it's about the gesture not the gift, stfu about all this materialism crap everyone >.<). Also, I like seeing my nephews having fun.
