No, i never have played blood. I'm not opposed to violent video games, just the attitude and insensitivity that this mod seems to have.

That guy at Destructoid put it to words pretty well (source: http://www.destructoid.com/school-shooter-the-case-for-sick-videogames-195296.phtml ) :
"It's a violent digital playground in which you're encouraged to take out your aggression on soft human bodies. In essence, this is the premise of hundreds of videogames. All this game does is take out the weak excuses for the violence."
I'm not sure I agree with that, though I do see what the author was getting at. The fact is, it's a deliberate decision on behalf of those creating this mod to place it in a school and to dress it up as a student massacre scenario. That's a far cry in my mind from simply taking what is a somewhat common place premise in games and placing it in a totally generic or non descript setting.

Whether the developers want to say this mod has a message or meaning or not, their deliberate choice of time/place gives it an inherent message/meaning. Would, say, making the game about a no named space marine on a distant planet killing what are possibly alien children in a futuristic looking but unidentified building until such time as the alien security forces overwhelm him change the basic gameplay? No, of course not, but if that's all the developers were really honestly interested in then why not use that scenario instead.

I don't like this. I think it is a bad idea and will probably get some people in the government to hell at him. On the upside if people who actually understand the game industry come up and bash this we might get some credit from the rest of the world... Probably not though.

To hit on the comparissons with GTA IV, in GTA mass murder is an option but it isn't the ONLY option, you can go around and work to AVOID civillian casualities if you want. For this game mass murder is the only option and I think for that reason most people will avoid it. Sure it is fun to snap every now and then and go on a killing spree but it isn't fulfilling.

Could somebody please put the sick degenerate developer out of his misery, before he bans videogames as a whole?

Why? This is the type of thing that sets us gamers back. He seriously can't think for a second that this is a good thing and if he does hes messed up in the head.

Interesting guy. Possessed of great insight occasionally, but also profound ignorance, preconceptions, and whatever else there is in the human psyche that can make a person personify the trope "Completely Missing The Point".

Ignoring the obvious gaps in his personality, it is interesting to note that his idea of a well-made mod, as opposed to something that some guy with a message just shat out, features NPCs pulled straight from the parent game. A school shooting where the students or staff are City 17 refugees, and the police are Barney Calhoun and Civil Protection? I wonder who put more work into their respective projects- this guy, or the makers of Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing?

And I like how its target audience is the crowd that gets a thrill from catching defenseless NPC civilians by surprise. I suppose they're out there. Maybe there's someone out there whose been shooting at paper targets in the tutorial stage of an army game and decides he's ready for slightly more of a challenge- but not too much more.

Actually, some of those targets move whether they're surprised or not and can be a little difficult to hit if you're not paying attention and have your mouse speed set to, like, 0.1 or something. Ok, maybe the target audience is the group that would like to play those tutorials, but they're not sure they're ready for something that hardcore yet.

He seems to fail at understanding gamers in exactly the same way he accuses the media of doing. He bought the same story he accuses them of spinning about us. Truly, those who send death threats constitute the majority of our demographic, and it's just so goddamn hard to find a gamer who wants some actual thought to have gone into his/her game. Because really, that's what we're after: A shoot-the-targets-before-the-time-runs-out game. It's what we've been waiting all this time for, wondering why it's never been done, when if you think about it, it really would have been simple for hundreds of existing games to have included it as a minigame or something, right?

Well, may the maker(s) of this mod remain as lost as they are, and never rise to positions of prominence in their current field of endeavor, or any other. And may those who point to this game as proof of the medium's unholiness be as mocked and irrelevant as those who point to Postal now.

I won't be playing it at ALL, but I do have to say:

GOOD FOR THEM

Being offensive and unapologetic about it is not a crime. Western culture has been increasingly pussified since the 70's, to the point that games and cartoons make us cry and wet our pants. Not to mention hypocritical since people here seem to be saying that killing innocent digital adults in GTA is somehow less offensive than killing digital children? Why? They don't exist. 1's and 0's don't have feelings or know the difference in ages. What is the difference between beating a polygonal hooker to death with a bat and shooting a polygonal teenager?

They're drawing a line in the sand and standing their ground, they're making a point about the creative freedoms guranteed to them and how it's wrong for society to scapegoat them, games, and any attempt to censor them for doing so. It's a lot like Carlin's "7 dirty words" battle, where what he said was not considered speech because it was offensive.

People need to be reminded that just because someone doesn't agree with them that doesn't mean they have to be punished for it. We are too eager to look for something to be outraged about instead of ignoring it, like the Westboro baptist church. The news gives them air time to spew their idiocy when they don't have to. If you don't like this mod, then stop giving it free press! I wouldn't have known about if The Escapist didn't post their interview.

I may not like it, but if someone feels the need to draw a picture of hitler raping a little jewish girl while jesus and mohammud high-five as they watch while giving each other handjobs, they should be able to do it without fear of litigation.

Besides, Why should a stupid mod get people worked up when they pack theaters to see THIS shit? This is more disturbing than any game I've played.

I really hope that something happens to that guy, and that he changes his mind. This mod is disgusting, and exists only to attract attention.

/edit
to clarify, I don't want anything physically bad to happen to that guy. I don't want him to wake up and find someone close to him dead in a shooting, or anything like that. I just want something to happen that'll humble him, and make him realise how sick the project really is. From that interview, he sounds about as detached from reality as you can get.

This guy really does come across as if he's out to troll, what with his comments about the California Games Bill and all.

A lot of people seem to be leaping to his defence though: I really can't fathom why. There's very little worth defending about this mod other than the creator's right to freedom of expression - it seems to have no artistic value, it primarily lacks the undercurrent of parody that is rather crucial to GTA being more than a tool to vent your frustrations on passing civilians. It's not even a good mod - it looks like what any teenager who's just got his hands on Source editing software would do. The only reason it's even making a feature article on here is because the creator is obviously skilled enough at riling people up that the internet has exploded around him.

Make no mistake, he has every right to make this kind of thing: what he lacks is clearly the tact to decide that doing so is inappropriate. Will this damage the medium as a whole? You bet. Wait until Fox News gets a hold of this story: they'll probably give the impression in their coverage that the game is actually being developed by Valve, just to further stir up angry sentiments from the kind of people who want more videogames taken off the shelves.

Although what compelled him to create this mod still doesn't make sense to me, and while it has great inflammatory potential, it's likely going to just be sidelined because it's a mod and not a game in itself, it seems difficult to accused gamers as a whole of something that some guy (guys?) made all by his lonesome in Source.

He brings up the good point of the problems gamers (and those on the internet in general) have with being overly defensive and angry towards those who don't share their point of view. It's a sad fact, but even if I disagree with his other thoughts, I agree with that statement at least.

Honestly though, it's not like he's going to sell millions of copies that will be owned by people all over the world. It'll likely be maybe a few thousand, tops. To use an analogy, if someone said that a few thousand people buying/downloading this game are representative of all gamers, that's like saying everyone whose ever watched porn in their life is a child-molesting bastard.

Who knows. It's not like it will be advertised or anything, so the only ones who download it are those who hear of it through the news or word of mouth. In other words, the general public likely won't know or care. And honestly I'm fine with that. He's a strange man for making a mod like this, but I support his right to make what he wants, just as all artists deserve the right to create what they like.

I get the feeling the creators have been planted and they're out to make gamers and game developers look like cunts (pardon my french)

So you as a gamer hope something bad happens to this guy in REALITY, for making something FICTIONAL because it makes gamers look bad for wanting violence?

Wow, way to be hilarious and hypocritical at the same time *clap clap*

Somthing being a fictional representation of a person's thoughts expressed in any medium has artistic value by default.

Those obscenity laws were made for real life situations, not cartoons or video games.

this SHIT cannot happen it will completely fuck everything the video game industry has worked toward it just becomes cannon fodder for video game censorship groups. if we want video games to be a beacon for the potential of interactive media then this kind of bullshit has to end.

as a member of the ECA I refuse to buy games that shed a bad light on the industry and you should too.

i have boycotted
dead space: because of the dead space ad campaign

The thing is that he's right. We do like jumping a room full of defenceless NCPs.

I also can't think of a moral difference between this and any war game.
It's the context that makes it so bad. Realistically, you're shooting lines of code, and that's fine. Intuitively, or emotionally, you're excitedly murdering dozens of innocent children, which isn't so acceptable.

I don't want anything physically bad to happen to him - I'm not a complete dickhead - but I want something to happen that'll humble him, or make him realise just how wrong he was. What he's doing is sick, but I don't think he should actually be harmed for it.

Oh, hoping for disease or personal difficulty is so much nicer than hoping he gets hit by a car.

Anyone that wishes harm or death for disagreeing about politics or fictional material is a shitty human being and I'll say it again if I have to.

Didn't one, if not both, of the Columbine kids create mods like this for Doom?

Jesus Christ... I can't even think right now. I'll probably edit this later...
