There was a mod for up to three-way multiplayer on oblivion, but it was kinda buggy. So, sure I suppose. Should be posible.

Skyrim's good enough and it would be a huge pain.

There is one single reason why this idea is terrible: resources. If a development team takes resources away from developing the single-player experience to make a multiplayer component, the single-player mode will inevitably suffer from it. That's simple mathematics.

And this problem is made even worse if you merge single-player and multiplayer - like what you're proposing. Games like Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, F.3.A.R. or Call of Juarez: The Cartel proved that. It would be close to impossible to balance the game for every type of match: single player, two players, three players AND four players.

And there is also the problem of immersion. There is no possible immersion in multiplayer. Immersion is what The Elder Scrolls is all about.

they should make a multiplayer for it, the people who want it can play it and the people who don't want it can just NOT play it..

You people talk of resources whenever multiplayers brought up like every single game the developers make they pour all of the companies fortune into it, and also like you actually know how they allocate resources in the company.

Maybe they would allocate additional resources to multiplayer that they otherwise wouldnt have, since they figure that adding multiplayer would increase sales and expand the longevity of the game(which means you can make more dlc to sell)

With the current engine, no. It's all programmed to function for a single player, the way data saves and the way things react.

As a concept; Yes, I guess borderlands-ish

Must EVERYTHING have MMO potential or have multi-player? I thank God that TES is still single player. If a game has a multi-player and a single player mode from its inception, then generally things work out alright. It's a well known fact, however, that the single player mode almost always suffers when multi-player is added into a franchise at a later date. TES is good at what it does. Why is it so difficult to appreciate the game for what it is, a very well conceived single player sandbox, and leave it at that? I know that multi-player modes and MMOs hold a lot of appeal, but I find it very difficult to roleplay when other people are about messing with my character's world. It is nice to know that the TES series remains a safe haven for those of us that want to retain the complete single player experience.

Thank god there is nomultiplayer. I really cant fathom the desire for such.
Dungeon-delving with your friends? Only one of you having to take up armorsmithing to make all the armors you need? Hunting dragons together?

That's just off the top of my head.

OT: Is it POSSIBLE? Sure. I bet if the Skyrim team worked on it they could have something playable in a couple of months. Modders? That'd be released around the time Elder Scrolls 6 comes out, if they get crackin'. Unless of course there's already some multiplayer framework Bethesda left in, but I doubt it.
Riiight, but what exactly is the purpose of playing a game if you let someone else do half the work for you? Where is the sense of satisfaction in knowing your every accomplishment is shared with someone else? What is the point of even playing a game like Skyrim if the role your playing is diminished from being the all powerful dragon born salvation/damnation of the world, to what amounts to the equivalent of a zerg rush. Much as I stated.. I sincerely dont get the allure personally, but then again, I am not a ME, which might well be the dividing line.
I disagree. It might be about your own personal accomplishments to some degree, but to me it's much more about how you role-play the game and experience it on a deeper level. In multiplayer it would be an extension of that, giving the player a unique and fun experience that will also be quite memorable. NPCs can also accompany you normally, so a lot of your accomplishments are already diminished in much the same way.

Also disagreeing with the all-powerful thing. I think that's boring. I hate being the center of attention, the big badass, the ultimate, all-powerful or extra-special guy who is the only one who can save the world. It's not my style. I really like to play as a unknown character. Nobody knows me, nobody cares about me, and I have to prove my worth around every corner and watch my back because the world doesn't revolve around me. I much prefer that to being the "chosen one". Not that I can't be a major player in turning the war around or stopping the dragon menace or whatever is happening in a given game. Perhaps I just end up in the right place at the right time. Basically, I don't need to be the world's only hope i every damn game. If I die, maybe someone else goes on to do what I failed to do myself?

So you sign onto the server and the players that came before you already did all the quests, cleared the dungeons, slayed the dragons and saved the world ... now what?
While that would be a much less stressful gaming experience it would also not be much of an experience.

OT: If people like it or not is up to them so I'll just cover the technical stuff.
A 2-4 person co-op experience could be done with the current game, but only one of them can be the main world mover.
You haveto understand this game was never designed with multiplayer in mind and it lacks all the necessary components, you got no netcode, no data flow, no exact character control, no data synchronizing,... all of this would haveto be done from scratch for this engine, we are talking months worth of work here and even then the question is if the game is open enough to allow for all the needed features.

Maybe if Bethesda pitched in with some insight as to how things mesh together people could be persuaded into bringing this to life, but Bethesda shouldn't be wasting dev time on this, let's be honest there is a shit ton of things to fix in Skyrim before we even start considering extra features.

Yes it's possible

Would I want it or actually play it? No. The Elder Scrolls has always been a singular rpg experience for me. Just like Baldur's Gate or Kotor, I'd never want to see multiplayer for them.

Plus it would detract from a lot of things, like the singleplayer campaign and everything. It's more trouble then it's worth. There are a lot more fantasy games that have multiplayer people can latch onto.

(I also know that Baldur's Gate did have multiplayer, but to my knowledge no one ever really played it. Most players I know used the multiplayer just to have a party of player generated characters)

I always wished they did the same for Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3. Alas, no such thing happened :(
Don't get your hopes up.

SKYRIM IS GOOD ENOUGH *foam foam foam foam*
Sorry, I had to.

Ahem. Anyway, for Oblivion there was MultiTES4 : http://csusap.csu.edu.au/~mloxto01/
I suspect there will be something for Skryim if someone is ambitious enough.
But not soon I'm afraid. Stuff like that takes time to do.

Keep your multiplayer out of mah Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls have always been a single-player experience. Not everything needs multiplayer tacked on.

No, for the sole reason the game would have to be tweaked too much just for the basic setup of multiplayability. Any more than that and it stops being an Elder Scrolls game.

Engine-wise, no. This "Creation Engine" is really just a heavily modified version of the Gamebryo Engine, which is designed from the ground up to be single-player only.
