Is Skyrim Multiplayer possible?

whiel i absolutely love single player to the max, and normally hate multiplayer...

i wouldn't mind having it borderlands style co op, having a bud and myself roaring away at a dragon together for better loot?

i could really get into that...

It will require a large change in engine (well maybe not as Gamebryo can do a lot of stuff but a change in speech mechanics, AI etc) to allow for mulitplay and co-op. If you go down the multiplayer road you will probably end up with something like a MMORPG but the co-op path could be interesting (I love Dead Island and I am in the process of finishing it this weekend with friends at a LAN at my house), again changes would have to be made but what you have to remember is that story may not be noticed and you would most likely have to have a system for deciding things as a party and to stop them form stealing the hypothetical armored truck and go joy riding for 10 minutes around the resort on Banoi while the others wait furiously until they get back so the story can progress

I think co-op would be very fun and also it would make for a better experience than Dead Island as a key in co-op is that each new game, something changes and Skyrim and the TES series has this in choices you can make.

Yes there is I suppose, you could hold half the controller and the other person would hold the other half, one would play the right hand the other the left, one would jump the other walk and dash.

The game is fine as it is. Yeah, I said it. And I mean it.

It does NOT need multiplayer fucking it up. And yes, multiplayer WOULD fuck it up for innumerable reasons. The mere broaching of the topic of multiplayer for ANY Elder Scrolls games smacks of the person broaching the topic "not getting it".

If you really want a swords and sorcery multiplayer game, PLAY WOW... or any of the other thousands of MMORPGs out there. Keep your dirty hands off of my Elder Scrolls!

It would have required little to no effort to make an area where you and your buds could pit your characters against one another. It didn't even have to be online it could have been system-link/split screen. Me and my friends have wanted to see who's characters are stronger since Oblivion, it's really quite sad that Bethesda doesn't feel this would be a fun little add-on.

Eh, I'm going to be honest here. In my opinion, all games are better with multiplayer... for the most part. But I feel that Skyrim shouldn't be co-op or up to 4 players. That would ruin the atmosphere of the game.

Having trouble? Go online and get people with endgame gear to push you through that quest.
Sucky weapons and armor? I bet there's a few people who'll just drop their unwanted +x tiers-higher-than-your-gear gear for you at no charge.

In such a large world, the player should be given as many choices as they want to solve a problem. And, when all else fails, the map is large enough, they can leave and come back later. With a partner, the potential for game breakers is endless.


On the other hand, if done right(Difficulty scaling, actually requiring two or more people for things, etc), it might be fun. I just believe that a game like this should, if anything, restrict itself to duels or fights. Things that are non-canon with the actual game. Maybe exclusive side missions or main story reenactments...

Not for me. It'd kill immersion. I have enough trouble with companions as it is... On that note, is there a way to have your followers NOT prioritize using their bows? Every follower prioritizes their bows over close-range... Even the swordsman and those big gruff axe-wielders.

Hah it feels like we're playing multiplayer right now anyways. we'll get in an xbox live party and share information, tips, things to check out and how we leveled our characters. Considering I left Lydia to die though,(she was stupid and in the way of my sick ass fireballs and couldn't mule enough of my stuff to be worth my time) it would be fun to hang out with someone who isn't completely retarded in enclosed spaces. they would enjoy me randomly murdering people for fun and profit too.

me and a friend where saying how awesome itd be if they had a game with the entire of the Elderscrolls world in it, especially even if it wasnt MMORPG (we dont need another) but had some sort of coop or adversarial mode.

Alright I'm not saying it wouldn't be a bad idea, but at the moment I'd prefer the developers focussing on the single-player experience rather then attach a multiplayer experiance which wouldn't be as good. plus the resources for a Elder Scrolls game is always focussed on the single player experience. but i don't think it would be a possible aspect for Elder scrolls because i really don't see it as a game that needs multiplayer.

Dungeon-delving with your friends? Only one of you having to take up armorsmithing to make all the armors you need? Hunting dragons together?

OT: Is it POSSIBLE? Sure. I bet if the Skyrim team worked on it they could have something playable in a couple of months. Modders? That'd be released around the time Elder Scrolls 6 comes out, if they get crackin'. Unless of course there's already some multiplayer framework Bethesda left in, but I doubt it.

Riiight, but what exactly is the purpose of playing a game if you let someone else do half the work for you? Where is the sense of satisfaction in knowing your every accomplishment is shared with someone else? What is the point of even playing a game like Skyrim if the role your playing is diminished from being the all powerful dragon born salvation/damnation of the world, to what amounts to the equivalent of a zerg rush. Much as I stated.. I sincerely dont get the allure personally, but then again, I am not a ME, which might well be the dividing line.

Someone has clearly never played D&D or any table top RPG before.

Multiplayer would be beneficial if there remains only one Dovahkiin. The other player could assume the role of a hired henchmen or something. Maybe replace Lydia and those kinds of people. I'm pretty sure implementing Cooperative like that would not even need the story tweaked, but the difficulty might need to be.

With the mod community around Bethesda games there's a very real potential PC Skyrim players to see limited multiplayer (though I have no idea what kind of technical limitations there are). I'd love to be able to invite a friend or two into a game and go dragon hunting, though a highly structured multiplayer like were going to get in ME3 I do not want for Skyrim.

Not really. It has been tried many times before, but it is way too difficult. Closest someone ever got was making a new NPC that responded to the keys on the other side of the keyboard, but you could only have one screen, the controls were pretty difficult to use and unresponsive, and it was basically unplayable. Not much chance of Skyrim getting modded multiplayer, especially since this a new engine entirely.

As for adding in multiplayer for Skyrim, I can 100% promise you it won't happen. Even if they wanted to (which they don't - Todd Howard has repeatedly said he doesn't want multiplayer in TES) it would be extremely difficult, if not downright impossible, to add in multiplayer. Too much is hard coded that they'd have to change. In addition to that, Bethesda hasn't made any multiplayer games (excluding their very early work decades ago) so I don't think they have anywhere near enough skill to do such a thing.

Also, most TES players don't want multiplayer. It just isn't that sort of game.

EDIT: if you want it, more power to you, but multiplayer in what has always been a single player, narrative driven affair it really doesnt make a lot of sense to add multiplayer, and we have already had too many games with illogical, senseless multiplayer tacked on

I think he means just having the ability to play co-op, which doesn't change anything at all.

I mean, some people have valid opinions, but some people really, really, are just being a little bit stupid.

First, the idea of it's there, so therefore I must play it!

No. If it was there, no one is forcing you to play it. No one. You can still explore on your own, doing whatever the hell you want, AWAY from co-op.

Second, the idea of Raaan0mn00b65 and dragons7ay3r joining your game and ruining it.

Again, No. In every game I have ever know, there are simple ways to stop people joining your game if you don't want them to.

1. Private Server = Just you and whoever you want!
2. Password = Just you and whoever you want!
3. LAN = Just you and whoever you want!
4. Kick/Boot = Just you and whoever you want, and you can boot the people you don't want!
5. The Mighty Ban Hammer = Just you and whoever you want, and you only have to kick people once!


Listen, my point is, I know a lot of you have very valid opinions, but please, other people, you know you don't have to have random people connected and you don't HAVE to play co-op.


I like the idea of co-op. Hell, I'd love the idea of an server style setup, with up to one hundred players! (It worked for ArmA) Just think, you and your crew set up shop in a nice fort, building your own armor and weapons, taking turns to patrol and keep a watch, when some bandits (other players) come and lay siege to your fort. Then a group of friendly soldiers might come along and have an epic battle worthy of song at the gates of the castle!

But, that is my opinion, and not relevant to this topic. Why?

It is possible. It would be better if Beth coded it in, but some modders back in Oblivion did it. Hell, I even used it. It was good, but you couldn't enter houses yet because he hadn't coded it in. Guess what his last post related to the houses was?

Sad. But, with Skyrim, the new engine and the updated, well, everything, it should be easier.

Skyrim's good enough and it would be a huge pain.

There is one single reason why this idea is terrible: resources. If a development team takes resources away from developing the single-player experience to make a multiplayer component, the single-player mode will inevitably suffer from it. That's simple mathematics.

And this problem is made even worse if you merge single-player and multiplayer - like what you're proposing. Games like Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, F.3.A.R. or Call of Juarez: The Cartel proved that. It would be close to impossible to balance the game for every type of match: single player, two players, three players AND four players.

And there is also the problem of immersion. There is no possible immersion in multiplayer. Immersion is what The Elder Scrolls is all about.
