They're all mass-produced, stereotypical crap, but there are a couple of good directors. I don't think there has been anyone new worth mentioning for about a decade, and there will be still fewer in future.
Damn ninjas... I was really hoping I would be first when I decided to recommend this... However Welcome To The NHK is far from the stereotypical anime. It contains a lot of dark humour and great drama. It's one of the best ones out there and I would recommend it to everyone even those who aren't interested in anime.cerealnmuffin said:Welcome to the NHK is another anime I highly recommend. It is definately different as it focuses on hikkomori (nerds who are obsessed with anime who hide themselves off from the world). It follows his story as a girl tries to help him come out of his shell while his nerdy friend tries to pull him deeper in by convincing him to make an eroge visual novel. It actually has a lot of depth to the characters as the series goes on and has a lot of funny moments (poking fun at pyramid schemes, falling for someone in an mmo, trials of game development).
F' Yeah to this one, not so much to the other one you mentioned.oddball250 said:Hellsing Ultimate
Yes, this one! It is a really good anime. Though I kinda dislike how they ended it. It felt unfinished and according to the Manga theres a whole lot more. I hope they continue it.Verzin said:For Anime that's aired recently, I'd suggest Deadman Wonderland, that is, if you don't mind a dark, cynical, and moar dark, though exceedingly well written plot.
EDIT: and violence.
I personally loved the Manga, but thought they really overplayed his "I need to be stronger to protect my friends" mentality in the anime, which pretty much killed it for me. Seeing someone cry and whine for so long in an anime is not quality entertainment as far as I'm concerned, which makes me profoundly sad, as I really wanted to like this show. And as far as the Manga goes, it's wrapping up it looks like, but it's still taking awhile. Good stuff so far, though still a little confusing...Nile McMorrow said:Yes, this one! There has only ever been a handful of good anime to come out each season.galaktar said:I've spent a good chunk of my free time these past years watching the animes that caught my attention. At first it was refreshing to see new ideas, settings, and plots explored. As time went on though, I started actively searching for new things to watch. I stumbled upon a few hidden gems, but things progressed, the pickins got slimmer. I'm sick of the cliches. I'm sick of the stereotypical characters. I'm sick of the wasted storytelling opportunities that Japanese animation revels in.
I've seen too many to list here, but I want to ask if the internet has any other recommendations before I swear off the medium entirely. Is there anything left for a jaded anime fan?
