Why not? Playing golf, tea time, and other fancy rituals that meant absolutely nothing used to be considered "civilized". Sex has always been common, and has always had detractors crying about how the kids of today have no morals. Orgies used to be common amongst the "civilized people" in some eras, so did things that were actually wrong like affairs, pederasty, and pedophilia. Nothing has degenerated, people are just blindly nostalgic.Thaius said:When I say "civilized," I mean in this specific era, not humanity in general. Excuse my nerdism, but when Obi-Wan said that the lightsaber was "an elegant weapon, of a more civilized age," he was referring to an age where everyone was still killing each other: it wasn't like that age was more civilized completely, just that their ways of doing battle, the specific subject which he was talking about, was more civilized.ReincarnatedFTP said:Not going to argue with your views, but when was this "civilized time"?Thaius said:There was a more civilized time where sex meant something, where people saved such physical interaction for the one they really loved, for marriage.
Because if you're arguing for like the 1950s or the Victorian age or the Medieval times, I have to say I'm glad I didn't live around then, and I consider us more civilized today than we were then.
We may be more civilized in many ways now, but definitely in the area of sex. Sex is worth nothing anymore: it's just a simple, meaningless pastime, and that can hardly be considered "civilized."
"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers."
-Socrates
See what I mean?
There's nothing immoral or uncivilized about making sex trivial if you want to. The reason it seems so widespread is because it's become accepted and morons aren't burning/hanging/arresting "heretics" and "sinners" over it anymore. Really, it means we have choice. We can choose to make it something important, or choose to see it as something common, or just something trivial that doesn't matter at all. People can use birth control, have safe sex, or abort an unwanted fetus.People can be gay openly and women aren't property (yeah I know gays can't marry but we're working on it, hopefully the old coots who still care blocking this will fade away soon) I consider this world of choice and openness better than the two-faced logic of the past where the Church had control and said "sex is bad lulz" while the upper class would commonly violate the "moral rules" regarding sex in their societies.
Society has always been sex saturated, it's part of being a human being. We're just free to choose what meaning we give to sex now without the Church going "lulz no wrong horrible". If you think sex shouldn't be cheap and you get made fun of by your peers because of it, ignore them or find better peers.
