I don't see how this is only a problem for otakus. Don't other japanese people use Youtube or similar sites? They may not be actively looking for copyrighted material, but they might watch copyrighted material without knowing it's copyrighted, which would result in people getting fined or even jailed for clicking on a link to a video.

Somewhere out there, in a large office building in California, theres a load of suits watching this process unfold and being extremely jealous of the situation.

Its only a matter of time before this kind of thing comes back to threaten the west too. I can't see this passing in either hemisphere, imagine the outcry......again.

It's japan are we honestly surprised?
Yes...

Japan may be "weird" but would you suddenly expect Japan to effectively ban all Anime clips, tribute videos?
Didn't think so...

I hope this kind of stupid law will bite Japan in the ass.
It will.

Take away the Japanese peoples Anime and come next election the offending parties will sever win a seat ever again.
I don't want any ill things to happen to Japan since they already suffered that earthquake and nuclear plant accident but things like this it kinda pisses you off and if they law is passed, it will give justification for those assholes in the US congress to pursue another bullshit censorship law.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just one small part of a big conspiracy to force young Japanese to get off the internet. With the thought being that once their off the internet their young males will start making babies.

I love the article title but laws like these already exist in america as well. The DMCA that was passed in 2010 made it illegal to rip or by pass any copy protection on dvd/bluray/game disc even for personal use. These type of laws are impossible to enforce/monitor, however they exist now for tack on charges if you are caught illegally downloading/uploading copyrighted materials.

Grumpy old men who cannot get it up need to fuck off. I am so sick of this, especially in the USA where I live.
Well that's the problem, they can't. ;P

That said, this is some bad news. >.>;; Better start backing up all my favourite NND videos before they disappear.

More like it would make Youtube dangerous to surf. It's a little like hunting around on Piratebay. Sure, there's legal stuff there, but to be realistic a significant fraction is not.

Youtube isn't so bad, but you can still find clips from shows(or sometimes entire episodes if they haven't been annihilated via orbital death ray yet), copy-written(not the right "write/right", I know, but copy-righten looks stupid) music, video game footage...a million things that could be "interpreted" as copyright.

Honestly I'm just surprised that my own moronic government isn't the one spearheading the stupidity this time.

I may be missing something, but how does this make Youtube illegal? None of the three specific acts mentioned in the article as being illegalized apply to youtube.
it doesn't, it's just a headline to grab attention from people.

Looks to be a lot of fresh meat on its way to those Japanese prisons then.

Seriously, if only the otaku know about this, how many "normal" Japanese citizens are going to be caught off guard as soon as this law goes in effect?

Japan: half-naked jailbait girls weilding guns the size of cars are fine, but youtube? Now that's just weird!

There's a lot of "casual" racism when it comes to Japan isn't there? Stop it, it's not funny, it's not alright. Japanese culture has stark differences to Western culture, but these eccentricities shouldn't be a source of derision, or flippancy when the people face challenges to their freedoms at the hands of corporation controlled governments. Those who disregard these oppressive and dangerous laws, because they perceive the country as "weird", are ignorant; and even the "humourous" advocacy of these beliefs is damaging. Should you ever make Japanese friends, you would surely quickly come to realise that they're individually complex, not crass easily dismissed stereotypes. You might find they have interesting perspectives and beliefs that remind you they hail from a culture that adapted and flourished differently to that which you did; rather than rejecting them as "Japanese wackiness" to stroke the ego of your Western upbringing and mannerisms, you would benefit from considering why these solutions to life's challenges were developed, integrating and adapting your own beliefs when you find wisdom you previously hadn't before benefited from. To avoid this is a insidious form of cowardice, and when it allows this sort of corruption of an entire nations rights to go unchallenged, consigning it as "their problem", you are complicit in the chain of events that ends, in this case, with the privatisation of the democratic process.

Anyway... I for one will fight this in any way I can, as before with PIPA, CISPA, SOPA, and all the other bills that undermine peoples rights and misuse the law for the benefit of avarice fueled corporations that only consider people as means of becoming wealthier, with concern only for as long the current board of executives are alive. If the prisons are full of people copyright "infringement offenders", no one can make anything without express permission from a legal division, and the global economy is collapsing as ancient elderly oligarchs hoard money, in 100 years, they don't care. It's outside of their lifespan, and therefore unimportant. I digress... they'll have my support in any way I can give it, by influencing the hand of the powers I am under the governance through appealing to their lust for votes, so they pressure the Japanese government. The people of Japan will have to amass their own resistance if it's to stand a chance though. Here's hoping.

This is awesome. I can't wait for the world to start banning things like this. The more stuff they ban all around the world the better. Because it will take less time for people to wake the fuck up and say that enough is enough. People are already pissed off at the world. All these new copyright laws that basically ban creativity because someone else thought of something first will not last. They can't last. If history thought us anything it's that you can't stop progress. Banning always leads to liberation. And I can't fuckin' wait for it.

So violating schoolgirl orifices is fine, but not violating copyright?
Makes sense when failing to show up in uniform means expulsion but using plagiarism for a school assignment is just fine.
Well... you should probably also mention the fact that the weird Anime porn is a result of the fact that live-action porn is illegal. They aren't exactly a liberal culture. In fact, they're about as conformist as you can get. The weird stuff is mostly a product of subcultures that are rebelling against the larger orthodox culture. The more extreme the orthodoxy, the more extreme the rebellion. But even given all of that I still absolutely adore traditional Japanese culture. (Not anime, I'm talking traditional Japanese culture like tea ceremony.)
