Japanese Nier Hero was "Too Girly" for Americans

Funny that, because I quite literally didn't bother looking further into the game, because its main character looked like another run-of-the-mill meat-head. Most games with 'run-of-the-mill meat-heads' seem to irritate me, so I tend to avoid them like the plague.

I kind of find the uglyness in Bethesda's character models kind of refreshing myself. More 'real' less 'beer commercial'.
What is it with people wanting realistic FANTASY heroes?
The entire cast of DRAGON AGE wants to speak to you.
Also, if you have to make an emotionally tortured character, James Sunderland or MGS4 Raiden
I actually felt for them. FF7 to FF-whatever, I hope they drop dead

Wow. when did gamers become so homophobic? 'He looks like a girl!'. Sheesh. Grow the heck up. And the irony is that these people only want the 'manly man' because of how big they imagine his **** to be.

Actually the attitude makes me laugh. Some slender long-hair weilding a giant sword is apparently 'gey', despite his penchant for girls that the critics cream over. Yet some muscle-bound meat head from a bullet bro-mance, with both hands on his (man)canon is 'AWWWWWWWESOME!'.

I didn't like Dragon age, loved Raiden in MGS2 and thought they killed his character in MGS4 and I really only liked FF Tactics.

Just so we know where I stand here.

What is with the japanese fascination with androgeny. I don't want to sound narrow minded, but it seems they go crazy over characters who's gender could go either way.
Basically it is them saying they aren't obsessed about gender by... being obsessed over gender. It is why I avoid these titles and studios altogether.

Because the unrealistic ones have become clichéd?

OT: I think this could be perceived as rather patronising. I suppose their hearts are sort of in the right place, though it is a shame they went from one stereotype to another.

I'm not. I have the same problems with Marcus Fenix types. Even with females.
Once again, I want/need/demand more everyman types.

Regular people in amazing situations.

That doesn't surprise me. I don't like Anime games, most of the characters look like children and I would feel like I am 15 if I played them. No thanks.

I do like Animes..there are some really good ones out there. Keep the Animes on television not in games.

The character design of the original is a lot better than the Americanized version. But yeah, Americans hate Tingle [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AmericansHateTingle] so from a marketing perspective it's not a bad choice.

I wonder if they'll ever release the original version through DLC or something. Id much rather play as the girly man. The main character right now is ugly as sin and I hate it.

I knew there was American hate towards girly men, but I didn't realize there was Japanese hate towards the beefcakes. I wonder if either side will be able to mix it up a bit, and branch out away from there cliches.

Don't bunch Anime's together. Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist looks pretty normal, as does Alucard from Hellsing (A stylized Steven Tyler?). It's the mainstream ones that have the girly types

Japanese Nier Hero was "Too Girly" for Americans
"A heated discussion ensued once the American and European staff were gathered to discuss it," explained Nier director Taro Yoko. "It was said that 'a slender and girly protagonist like this couldn't possibly swing a huge sword like that, it's ridiculous.' Certainly, if you look at American games it's always muscle bound mains who look like they play American football."

"A lot of people were arguing for making only the macho old guy version for cost reasons, and we were saying, 'But if we don't make a girly version we'll lose heart and it'll take even longer'," he explained. "As a result, the Japanese PS3 version only became the girly version, and both PS3 and Xbox 360 international versions were the macho old guy versions."

Hey, "the macho old guy" might be silly too but when it comes to cleaning house, I'll take that over the skinny emo child any day.
It understandable in a commercial standpoint. We gave developer a hard time for each Girly man in video game. While Final Fantasy got a free pass because of the franchise or Metal Gear Solid 2 that is considered the HIGHLANDER THE QUICKENING of the franchise. I'm not the first one to say that, (and if you don't believe me ask MOVIEBOB.) Video Game come from (in majority) from Japan. There, women consider Raiden of Cloud more attractive than Solid Snake and Barret. We take video game for granted and don't really care about what it is, if we can't dream to be like the Hero. We WANT to be Snake and not Raiden! Well, Metal Gear is a special case, so that another thread all together.

Yes. If you played JRPG, you might have. So, is there a chance that the japanese liked Gears of War?

Raiden had a VERY VERY good reason for being angsty. He was being played with, a puppet
But Final Fantasy characters... urgh!

Personally, I'd love to be like Raiden, he's the ultimate survivor alongside SNAKE!

In this age of multiple costumes and models (not to mention systems with gobs of storage space) why not just give us the choice and save themselves the boring marketing meeting? For that matter, give us both genders, so you play as Yonah's buff mom/angsty big sister?

I don't know about anyone else, but I had a bigger problem with the costumes, and changed to the (very slightly more practical) samurai ones as soon as I unlocked them in the DLC...

So in the world of gaming today I can either play as a gritty ugly behemoth of a man drowning in violence and misery, or I could play as a bitter androgynous teenager. Is it too much to ask for some kind of third option?
Irridium said:
Agreed. Can't we play as, you know, someone who's actually interesting?
Like, maybe, a gas-masked catlike alien? Heh heh heh. Not that i disagree - seriously, more options please.

Hi. Yeah, gay here. I think the character design looks pretty fucking shit. Nothing homophobic about it.

I agree 100% with this statement. Raiden was an angsty effeminate character done right.....if that makes sense.
