It's just DoA. There is a good game under everything Team Ninja does but just wouldn't be a Team Ninja game without it. Every medium has quite frankly ridiculous stuff and I could probably name a good few things but I don't think that is allowed here. It isn't necessarily a good thing but it isn't something that can just be changed about games or any media over night. If you really want to see bad stuff just go to the strange parts of the internet not that I recommend it in fact I'd rather you didn't go there.

To me as people have been putting up a lot of videos of it for some reason DoA is like Highschool of the Dead of fighting games. You don't compare HotD to Walking Dead nor do you compare DoA to I dunno Tekken. That is where I see the problem. There is no Walking Dead to fighting games and if there was I think this would be a much smaller issue. I can't think of a single Fighting game that is mature with normal watershed levels of sexualisation. That is what I see to be the real problem here no alternatives.

One thing I don't agree with is that they look like kids. They are all made to look more or less barely legal and once again not saying that it makes it any better but still a bit of an exaggeration. Also the episode was fun.

FYI, I fully admit that today's episode is ridiculous and pointless. It was, however, incredible fun to record and edit. Hopefully it's fun for you to watch. <3
Yes Jim. :) This video was very entertaining. (I am aware that this statement can be taken in some very bad ways. To those who wish to do so, the only pre-reply I can offer you is; SHUT UP! Unless you were actually very funny.)

However, I don't think it's completely pointless (again; Shut up). As you said, many people do know this already, but few come out to say it on a "public stage". So thanks Jim, and thank God for you. <3

I kind of liked the breasts...then I saw them in motion and noticed the bizarre movements. When Jim gets his inevitable buddy cop film (co-starring Yahtzee and, featuring Bob Chipman as the crooked chief of Police) Adventure Fantasy-Time Willam Defoe is going to be the fan-favorite character. Just like Vinnie Gognitti.

Thank Jim for Jim!

"Plastic children" - Desperately grasping for a demonized (rightfully) buzz word that doesn't remotely apply. No one looks at DoA girls and thinks, oh what a well endowed child. Your better than that, that's Fox News territory. These are blatantly not pre-teen or early teen models, maybe mid at a reach, if Japan wants you to see a child in porn you'll know it.

Lets face it, this is interactive soft porn. Are you going to go to a porn studio and rant about how big man parts objectify and enforce untrue information about the average man? This is a fantasy game, it's meant for... ::drum roll::... fantasizing. Reality doesn't belong just as much as when your day dreaming about William Dafoe.

Boob render quality - If you don't like one soft porn mag, buy another or don't buy one at all. Team Ninja doesn't owe you your personal brand of realistic jiggle physics and size. They're attempting to supply a particular type of fantasy to a niche market who enjoys it and they've put their time in to produce it.

I feel this is coming from anger about indoctrinating a ridiculous visual standard, please look at it this way...

Porn is like candy and candy will always be around. It's bad for you but it's fun once in a while and if you become disappointed that all food doesn't taste like candy then sooner or later you'll get hit by the reality bus. This is the natural progression of maturity inherit in all experiences and it doesn't make liking candy wrong. Your problem is with a brand of candy you have no taste for and an assumption that everyone's grasp on reality is extremely fragile, grow up.

P.S. Love all your thought provoking videos! :)
Oooh, a voice of reason in this virtual sea of moral panic. I tip my hat off to you good sir.

I completely agree, to each his own. I dont personally find it sexy at all nor am I in the least interested in the DoA-franchise, but I couldn't care less that some people are. The games are being made and obviously there is a market for it, there is a market for porn as well but I'm not going up in arms over that either.

And using children as terminology is just being intellectually dishonest. First of all, children is 1-12 years old, maybe even 13-14 but after that they are teenagers. These are obviously not 10yearolds we are talking about here, so swinging around the "think of the children"-card is just silly.

According to wikipedia, Kasumi is 17 years old, and sure looks older to me atleast. Furthermore, she is a fictional character that is most certainly not portrayed as looking like a child. When you have a fictional character, her age becomes less of how old her creator says she is (he could have called her a 5 year-old, but with that appearance she will still look like an older woman) and more about how she looks. And if the face looks somewhat young, so what? Have you never seen 16-20year olds with young faces? I sure have.

Also worth noting is that while many here like to critize the "culture" aspect, not many realize that they themselves see american culture as a default. Not all countries have 18 as a cutoff-point for when you are allowed sex. Sweden (as prude as we are in other aspects) actually have the cutoff-point at 15 years of age, making the DoA-girls legal by a good margin.

I just want to finish with a small disclaimer, I myself have no interest in DoA, underage girls or huge breasts. I'm just one of those live-and-let-live kind of guys, as long as no one is hurt. Let the market decide what is right and wrong, what is tasteful and what is not. Not some arbitrary morality that demonizes things that you do not like but absolutely not the things you DO like.

These are the kind of issues I'd like to see being dug much deeper into. The Dead or Alive series creeps a lot of people out, but it can't just be the alien breasts. There's something more to it - something sinister - something about the way Team Ninja treats women in their games in general. It's beyond aesthetic, it's beyond fetishization and sexualization, there's something in the way they do it that stinks. In fact, I'd condone someone writing an essay on this subject.

There's something very, very wrong with Team Ninja.

They could be those rigid fake breasts that do not move no matter what you do to them

You know, the ones that seem to follow you around the room no matter where you go
Are you sure they're not your own?
Side note: is Team Ninja involved in the Soul Calibur series too? I'm a straight, red-blooded man, but even I find the level of sexualization in those games' women almost insulting and blatantly pandering. Their ads seem to say "BOOBS! Now that we have your attention, buy our game featuring garish costumes on comically unproportioned women and laughably oversized weapons that don't draw a drop of blood! Because unlike SOME Game developers, we're not savages!"

Speaking as a 22 year old straight male whose never seen naked breasts in real life I thank Team Ninja for doing what they do.

Personally, I find the obsession with breasts as a sex symbol to be unsettling, immature and pointless. For starters, breasts are a motherly thing, so basically our whole culture is obsessed with fucking mothers. Very Freudian.
But more than that, why are breasts the only thing that is sexy? Why not try focusing on something that bespeaks of the individuality of the character, like, say, the face? Oh, right, because we don't really want individual characters here. We're just looking for a sex-object, ergo we focus on something that isn't capable of talking back.

There is nothing wrong in having breasts with physics
Similarly to first 3D character models, this stuff will become OK eventually
(at this point they move too slow and keep their inertia for too long)
In perfect case scenario this technology eventually will be developed for various breast sizes/forms/clothes and adapted also for males- pecs and manboobs
FaceGen also started with horrible monsters

On the other hand response of TeamN is kinda... strange (for a lack of better terms)
At this point I'm even starting to believe that they are saying these things to generate buzz
Because I don't think that these guys are THAT stupid.

No, Soul Calibur is Namco-Bandai. Personally, Soul Calibur never bothered me in this respect, since ridiculously designed characters and weapons seems to be the point.

When you have characters like this

in the game, I really don't think being realistic is what they're trying to do. I can see how people are put off by it though and don't begrudge anyone who doesn't like it. Also, that ad where they just showed a picture of boobs was just stupid. What they should have done is release that in addition with an ad showcasing Voldo's codpiece. At least then they'd seem like they were just dicking around and recognizing their craziness instead of outright pandering.

What children?
You can create a digital representation of a child, check age 18 in its biography box or whatever, but it still looks like a child. Feel free to pretend otherwise to alleviate your post-masturbatory guilt, however.

This, however, THIS I can respect.

Also, a general question: If DoA is such a SRIOUS FIGHTING GAME, why the voyeuristic camera function? (Pro-tip: if you think it's for watching replays of the fights to fine tune your technique, you're wrong)

I watched a few episodes of High School of the Dead. I spent the whole time telling myself to be ashamed of how much I sort-of-kind-of enjoyed it in all its awfulness.
If you want a decent justification :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDii4knbtL8
It explores some mildly interesting concepts, aside from strange giggle physics.

I want to buy DoA 5 because I like the fighting style. But I know that the first reaction anyone who seems me playing it will be, "you bought this for the boobs, didn't you?".

Team Ninja, please stop doing this so I can buy your games again.
This is how I feel about the series now.

to be fair the mangaka of that series basically did say "yes we are making a perverted series for 15 year olds." Though the manga didn't have the bullet time part to it.

I just read about this.

See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-young-phd/breasts_b_1910401.html

Basically it's about bonding. Men instinctively exploit the same stimuli that cause a mother to bond with her baby. So it's entirely natural to go nuts for boobs.

captcha: fair and square. Even the captcha agrees. Can't argue with that.

And now I remember this one Gamer comic where someone depicted the situation as something like this...

DOA Girl 1: Ahh, my breasts! what are they doing?!
DOA Girl 2: THEY HAVE A MIND OF THEIR OWN!
*One of the girls Breasts tears off and flies into the air*
DOA Boob: I'm Free!
*DOA Boob continues into space*
...Now if only I knew where I saw that...

I'm surprised Team Ninja didn't put the sentient silicone in Samus during the other M.
Didn't stop Metroid other M from being an exercise in how NOT to to depict Samus. I'm still trying to figure out just who gets the lion's share of the blame for that mess.

This video reminds me why I stick to the shallow end of Japan's weirdness. Mildly weird..sure sprinkle alittle here and there and it's still fun. You go far enough ...you go into things I rather not delve into. At some point I actually start feelign embaressed for whomever made it. That's when you've gone too far off the rails.

The statement that being creepy is cool in our culture and everyone else should back off bothers me. I doubt it's true that mainstream japan is absolutely ok with all that notion as I know there's still plenty of ultra conservative old school japan people out there too. That said as a disclaimer if younger japanese men were all wired to the expectation of that mindset, If ear for the girls of their country if that were true. Ultimately I haven't been there and try to refrain from making sweeping generalizations. I will dismiss as one asshat's defense for being a perv than toss a whole nations values under a bust....I mean bus.

Almost all of the problems with Other M can be traced directly back to Sakamoto.
