Fei nodded her head enthusiastically, clutching the book tightly to her chest. SHE WAS ENTRUSTED WITH A SPECIAL BOOK THAT SHE COULDN'T READ! Fei took off with hurried steps down the hallway to her room, which wasn't too far. Why did she have to share a room with Gabriel anyways? He was kind of lame. He didn't even have very good stuff in his bag. Well, the crossbow was kind of cool, but that's it. She had to remember that it wasn't waterproof though, like the other book she had. Maybe she should store it in Gabriel's bag instead, much more boring things happened to his bag.

She wasn't looking where she was going, too focused on the book she was carrying, and ran into... something. It didn't feel as hard as a wall, which was good. Made her see stars though, even though she was inside. "Whooa..." She sat up. It was... well, a normal looking guy. He was older than she was, but younger than her brother. He looked... like some of the boys she saw around in Oublie. He wasn't one of the mages they came with... maybe he was a boy-maid? She swept up the book from the floor defensively, glaring at him for being in her way.

Joey returned the sudden glare with a look more akin to a smirking confusion. Her glare looked more like an exaggerated pout to him, and he found that somewhat endearing. "You're one of the girls from earlier..." He remarked, sheathing the dagger. "Sorry 'bout that, I should've been looking where I was going." Doing a quick scan of the girl, she clearly had some interesting morsels in her possession. He turned on the ol' Dunst charm, and took a knee at her side. "Need some help?" He held out a hand. "What's your name? I'm Horatio. You can call me Joey, if you'd like." He introduced himself, smiling that infectious smile of his. Or, at least it was a smile he thought was infectious.

Jade similarly stopped with Alexander as he paused after going into his explanation, giving him a look that seemed to be wondering if he wondered what he was quite describing. However, he seemed to shake it off quickly, so she did similarly and looked the door over with Alexander, giving him a small look as he stated his new plan for the door.

"What exactly are you going to do, Lord Alexander? I do...not have the key for this door. It is a private place for the Lord Edgar, and he is the one who holds that particular key with himself. I don't...think he would take your story. He might, because....well, it sounds like something he would want to see." Jade went over slowly, seeming to try and figure something out at the same time as Alexander was looking over the door.

"So...no ill will yet. Yet, being the key phrase there, as we have yet to leave this realm as well to get away from these lords..." Alexander's shadow went over slowly, only to pause when Alexander mentioned how he was going to open the door.

"....Disable the lock? I don't know about these doors, but I never....thought one of the skills you had was lockpicking. What....do you plan? Gods, these artifacts are odd. Why does this one glow like that? Do you think it would glow in all the realms? Or perhaps it is just my eyes....and this one here. I...dread it. It shouldn't be here because of what it does. It doesn't touch this world, as it was not meant for it..."

Alice could only smile as they wandered over to yet another orb. This one in particular in a rather strangely designed room. There appeared to be a collection of mirrors that just were angled all over, along with some shrouded golems in the room as well. As Alice glanced about, she walked over to one of the displays and collected what seemed to be a spear. With a quick spin of the weapon, she paused upon noting how she was doing it in front of Drew.

"Er...for protection, Lord Drew. I do not...like this room. It does not proceed the same as the others and I don't much care being here unarmed...even though it poses no problem, of course! Simply a....precaution." Alice explained, giving it a practiced thrust.

This orb in particular seemed to beckon too, apparently almost seeming to thirst for some form of energy to pull upon as well. The shadows about the room also gave off an odd flickering, since the lights from the hallways were now too far away to effectively light the room much like the others.

[hr]

As Fei had her run in, Eliza wasn't too far away now, having taken it upon herself to keep a close watch on the demon girl...or whoever she spoke with from time to time. It seemed that she had run into one of the guys, meaning that something was going on....especially with the book that she had been carrying that she did not recall her having at the party.

"Oh no...what if its a spell book? What if it calls more demons? That...I would have to do something! Need to...uhm...." Eliza paused in not know what exactly she could do other than watch at this point. But she knew the second that something happened she would do something!

Until then I guess I should....wait, I guess. Maybe I'll find more demons and we can take them out all at once! I'll be a hero! Get a fancy room, and private stuff and...

'I'm not going to pick the lock, I'm going to cut the lock. I would ask Edgar but we may not have the time for that.'

"Jade I want you to listen to me carefully. Once I'm in, run and go find Edgar, tell him what I've done and why. Apologize for me and tell him I will acquiesce to his judgment on the issue. Tell him that I would never have done this if there wasn't the possibility of someone close to me possibly dying."

With that said he bent down and saw that the lock went into the well at an angle into the floor. He focused a thin laser between the door and the floor on the metal and held the laser there until the bolt was cut, this was repeated on the second lower bolt and he tried the door to find it was still locked.

Without a word he went to a nearby room in search of something to stand on. He came back with a chair and set it at the door before finding the other two bolts and repeating the process. Upon opening the door he saw something that shocked him and in some way and he actually looked over to Jade to see she had about the same reaction he had.

Alexander could in fact see his shadow but not in the usual manner, a head, arm, and leg were actually physically in existence and this shocked the both of them. He quickly figured it might have something to do with a set of nearby knives which flashed brighter with each cycle. It wasn't long before he was grabbing the arm and leg that existed and dragged his shadow towards the very edge of the room. It seemed to have a good reaction as the shadow once again began to fade.

"Get Edgar now." He said a bit too loudly for his own ears out of the room as Jade immediately ran in the direction they had come from. He took a brief look around the room and a few things caught his eye as he began to focus on putting some energy into his other self. Namely the fact that Nydia's shadow was there at the edge of the room, an ornate box containing crystals, an object which was gun shaped and covered in ornate runes, and something which actually grabbed his attention for a bit. It was a staff that had markings that placed it as something Alexander had read about in a legend at some point in his past. The artifact was said to have been owned by a mage who could use two elements when he held it.

He guessed it at least partially wasn't much of a legend anymore, but he turned his attention back to checking on and aiding his shadow.

"Aha. There we go. An emergency set of armour and weapons in every bedchamber, just in case. It'll do nicely." In Gabriel's peripheral vision, Isa's dress flew - presumably thrown - onto one of the beds. After a few minutes its owner emerged, dressed in studded leather of black and silver, tightening the straps of a small shield attached to her forearm. A polearm of some sort was in a sheath on her back. "Gabriel? Have you found something with which to occupy yourself?"

Gabriel didn't look round. Instead he pulled a couple of textbooks out of his pack and set them aside.

Isa simply laughed. "It's okay, Gabriel, I'm decent."

"Oh." Blushing a little - mostly from embarrassment - Gabriel turned to find that she had armoured up. "I guess I have something to do... studies. Beats sitting around and waiting for someone to happen by, or wandering without cause."

"Probably the best idea. I can't stick around, I have to muster for the battle. Enjoy yourself." Isa made for the door as she spoke. Gabriel noted her weapon was rather short for a polearm... it looked almost like a sabre's blade attached to a thin walking stick. "Good luck to you," he offered, taking a seat in front of the fountain.

Isa just laughed a second time before she left. Gabriel turned to his books, leafing through the pages until he found something suitable. Combative Applications of Hydromancy, Chapter II: The Secrets of Steam... "Using the water present in air to the Mage's advantage, an aspiring Adept can draw their element directly from thin air and condense it. In a flash, the Mage can superheat a condensed sphere simply by separating water molecules at high speed, and thus hurl a scalding steam cloud at a foe... this sounds good."

Raven had a bit of a look through the darkness that Seth indicated at the other end of the hallway. It was a door, as he predicted. Nothing about it seemed very special aside from the black veil shrouding it. It was just an ordinary door. The orb in the center of the room might have been a bit more entertaining, but it appeared to be dim as well. The torches had to be important, but for what? Either way, the room was as bright as a rock in a batch of beef stew. Just the way she liked it.

"I don't think there's anything to concern yourself with over that door," Raven informed him as she came up behind him. "It looks pretty run of the mill. Might even be one of those closets you think our shadows are hiding in. The only thing special about it is that you can't see it." She snuck up behind Seth letting her fingers trace up his arms before settling on his shoulder. As he turned around, she smiled. "And I think I like having that advantage on you."

She pulled down gently on Seth's head, bringing him in for a kiss she was determined to make last longer then the previous one.

[hr]

"And...I think that they'll take us a long ways. When we get to where it is...risky, we'll be safe. I'll keep us safe. Remember, I took the risk, so you don't get to worry.

Shadow leaned back into Seth as he finished following the trail. "I guess it does no good to worry," she admitted. "Besides, you're right. This was worth it. I will walk with you into the Light itself. Knowing I had this."

Nydia remained silent as they were joined by a pair of centaurs followed by the woman from before. Both seemed to be seeking a demonstration of their abilities and though Nydia was grateful to Onyx for lending her the dress, she had no intention of showing off. Thankfully Silvana was willing to display her own powers which seemed to be satisfactory.

Or so Nydia had thought until she almost fell out of her seat from Onyx smacking her shoulder. It seemed Onyx was curious about her and Cale now and there would be no getting out of it this time. "Well... Perhaps just a bit." She muttered, deciding that it would be rude to not show any gratitude for the hospitality so far. "The opposite of Silvana, I control light." She said, conjuring a ball of light in her hand and gradually shifting it between different colors as she continued, eyeing the battle in the background wearily. "It has more applications than just this of course. I mainly focus on healing magic, which I sincerely hope I won't have cause to demonstrate."

As she was speaking, Onyx was distributing a strange food to them all. Nydia was a bit weary of it as she took it, heeding the centaurs caution. The fact that Onyx didn't find it to "pack a punch" at all was of no consolation to her and only made her a bit more weary. "W-what is it?" She inquired uncertainly, though the battle between Edgar and the centaur came to a close behind them before she could get an answer. "The main show? I take it that's the battle you spoke of earlier?" The majority of the guests were filing out of the room now which Nydia took to mean the party was over now. She was a bit thankful for that as things were starting to escalate out of her comfort zone.

"I'm not hurt!" Fei said defensively, standing up. She decided she could go ahead and introduce herself to this guy, whoever he was. "I'm Fei. Are you a maid too?" Evie popped out from behind Fei, giving an equally scathing glare at the mage. She had seen him with Rosa, and didn't approve.

[hr]

"Ah! A healer then! You would be a wonderful ally in the fight. Such an uneven battle it would be then! Anyways!" Onyx stood up as the others at the table were vacating as well. "My dear mages, it is my DUTY to return you to. Your. Rooms! You do not want to be here if you're not going to be fighting! Attacks tend to be non discriminatory, yes? Your clothes are washed and hopefully dried, if Tammy has been doing her duties and not slacking off." She escorted Silvana to her room, then continued with Nydia and Cale.

"Are you a maid too?" Joey raised an eyebrow at the peculiar question. "Do I really look like one?" He had to question the question with his own question. "Might be the vest." As smoothly as possible, he gently took Fei's hand. "No..." Made his voice as soft and svelte as possible. "But I could be your maid." He gave the hand a slow peck. "Here, i'll even carry your stuff." He motioned towards the book.

Drew took a look over the room, freaked out by the mirrors. By the time he looked back at Alice, she was using a spear. "No problems. Got it." He muttered, quickly shooting a bolt into the orb. "Can't imagine what other freaky stuff is here..." He could feel orb powering up, his eyes darting around to see if something would go wrong. As Drew fired his bolt into the orb, there was a physical pulling on Drew towards the orb itself, much hungrier for the power that Drew was using than the others. With the initial bolt there was a low rumbling in the room, and the shrouded golems in the room shuddered, but didn't activate like the other rooms.

Alice, obviously not pleased with the room, spun the spear around towards the nearest golem, and then glanced at the orb giving off the faint blue glow. "Lord...Drew. Do you think we need to do something else? That didn't...work like it did before." The action dazed him a little, but it frustrated him more than anything else. He took a step back, sparking as he prepared. "I can take this..." he focused more power, firing a much more intense shock into the orb. "Whatever you did before... keep doing it..."

The more intense shock empowered the orb, also causing Drew to stumble a few steps closer to the orb as it again gave a much stronger pull. This time, instead of spinning the spear towards the golems, Alice made a quick grab for Drew. "Whew....I think that...worked." Alice said with a small sigh as the golems in the room began to activate as well. Though, instead of going to some post, they instead seemed interested in the room itself, taking up position at the doors and seeming to settle on watching the pair in the room. He was a bit woozy, but got himself together quickly. "Thank..." he then saw the golems moving. "Some stupid orb wasn't going to get the better of me." he smirked. Alice then asked "....Think it will be safe to leave?" Seeing the golems move, he took another step back. "...That's not a good question to be asking. I have no idea."

"Well, Lord Drew...only one way to find out." Alice whispered, and seemed to stand up a little straighter as she began moving towards the golems. She visibly tensed as she passed by, but the golems made no attempt on her. "Safe....enough to go to the battle then. I believe we should be alright, Lord Drew. Hopefully it will make the difference in the battle...Which, I never did learn if you plan on your and your sister to watch or not."

Drew took a moment to consider the situation. "I was going to watch. And I know that Fei is going to try and watch no matter what I say. Is there somewhere relatively safe we can observe from?"

"Of course, Lord Drew. We will simply need to make our way up from this lower floor to one of the towers....This way please. There is a balcony up above which is good for seeing the stars...and will also provide a good view of the field itself. Even their camp might be visible." Alice chatted, moving forward and glancing behind herself as they went up what could only be described as tons of steps. "Are you....sure, Lord Drew? I know it shouldn't be my position, but I realize it will not be something you have seen before."

Drew followed closly behind her. "Look, just sitting around and waiting for everything to wrap up would just be a waste of time." he said, looking up. "That being said... please tell me there's a faster way down..."

She smiled and responded "Of course there is, you simply ju-" Alice paused, realizing with a glance at Drew her mistake. "Oh...uhm, unfortunately not. It is the stairs simply for yourself. Unless you turned on something extra I'm not familiar with.."

He took a moment, groaning with frustration. It wouldn't actually take as long going down as it would going up. At least there was that... "Funny. Even a day ago, that wouldn't have been a problem." he said, hoping the top of the stairs were close.

"Well, it will be fine for you, I'm sure. Besides...maybe a bit of running would help you in the future, Lord Drew." Alice said as she finally arrived at the door and flung it open to show a large balcony with a collection of flowers along the edge. Taking a few steps, she pointed towards some woods and the mansion that had been seen before with the torches lit.

"That is likely where you will want to go next. A good point to take a break while you head....well, where Lord Edgar is likely to point you. Iron Mistress territory." Alice said, seeming to take note that they could only see some smoke rising from the centaur camp, not the camp itself.

Drew looked at the balcony before looking out to the mansion. "From everything I've heard, we might want to avoid that place. But we might not have a choice..." he muttered to himself. "Uh... thank you, Alice." he said, looking over to see if he could spot anyone else. As Drew looked upon the landscape, he saw the tower with the larger top from before, along with the Manor with lit torches. Even further out he could make out some distant smoke trails rising, and some mountains a bit further on. Otherwise, the woods looked mostly normal from this angle. As normal as otherworldly woods with multiple trees and different creatures going around. Directly below seemed to be the forming battle lines for the formerly dressed maids, many of the rock troops, and the Lord Edgar himself laughing as they prepared to fight.

His sightseeing was interrupted by Alice. "You are welcome Lord Drew. I take my leave now, I have a battle to attend to." And with that, Alice turned and began to make her way back down the steps. However, Drew spoke up "Wait! Uh... look, could you get someone to tell Fei where I am? Don't want her wandering around the castle."

Alice simply nodded, waiting to see if that was all. "And... uh... one last thing." he said. He hesitated, but leaned forward, giving Alice a kiss on her cheek. "Good luck."

Horatio was kind of cheesy, and plenty of suspicious to Evie. She unleashed a torrent of warnings at the mage, all of which were ignored. He was a mage... wasn't he? Evie knew the other ones could see her... Now that she thought about it, this guy didn't have a shadow that she could see. Instead, Evie had to appeal to Fei, who was a melted puddle of conflicting emotions. She giggled and blushed when Horatio kissed her hand. It was like a page out of the Lightdweller Princess! She was like the HYDROMANCER PRINCESS!-
"Here, I'll even carry your stuff."
"AH!" Fei punched Joey in the face when he reached for her book. "YOU'RE JUST AFTER MY BOOK!" She looked at him with a face of disgust, glaring. "Who are you!? D-don't make me hit you again! Are you a thief!?"
"Lady Fei!"

It was that maid that had been with her brother, cept she was all dressed up in armor. The one he kept making eyes with. "I wasn't going to give him the book! Honest!"
"Afternoon, Horatio." Alice crossed her arms, adding another pair of eyes to glare at Joey. "Your reputation as a poor romantic and a kleptomaniac precedes you. Come Lady Fei, I'll escort you... safely, to your room. Afterwards, your brother would like you to meet him. And Horatio, I advise that you come with the Lady Fei. As much as I would like to meet you on the battlefield, I doubt Lord Edgar would like to see you harmed."

WHAM! Joey barely had enough time to brace for the straight jab right to the nose. He chuckled and held his face as the young girl threw agitated questions at him. "Hehheh, not bad...ow ow ow ow OWWWWWW." He managed to shake away some of the pain. By that point, one of the maids approached the girl. It was one of the girls he ran into earlier...right? She totally knew his name, so I guess it's good for something."Maybe...I forget."

"Your reputation as a poor romantic and a kleptomaniac precedes you." She sneered. Joey chuckled again and shrugged. "Hey, heh, well, you know me..." He was basically replying to their backs, Alice and Fei already proceeding forward, leaving Joey alone in the hallway. "Ahh...that went nowhere." He cursed under his breath and sighed.

"Well, I got hit by two girls so far! Today has be very productive, maybe I should see if I can beat my old personal record...of being hit by females in single day." He always considered it a fun little challenge. He was ready to go off in the opposite direction, but then the maid stopped his gait. "And Horatio, I advise that you come with the Lady Fei." He slumped a bit." "Aww, but that means I have to stick with the humdrum-no-fun crew..." He sighed in exaggeration. "Okaaay..." He dragged his bare feet, not having to do much in order to catch up to the two. "What's in the book, anyway?" He asked Fei.

"I dunno, I can't read it." Fei was more confident that he wouldn't steal the book with the maid there. She felt kinda bad for him now. "Um... sorry about your nose. Uh..." She took a small blue handkerchief out of her pocket and awkwardly smacked it onto Joey's nose. "Here." She used a little healing magic, mostly involving making his nose cool/cold to put down any swelling, and kinda numb it to the point that all you really felt was frozen instead of the throbbing pain of being punched in the face for the second time. An easy-peasy spell. Fei misunderstood his lack of enthusiasm though. "It's OK, Joey. I think you're an okay romantic!" she beamed, still clutching the book tight. He could be an EXPERT KLEPTOMANIAC.

Seth wasn't much to be dissuaded from things that he wasn't quite allowed into. However, as Raven stepped up behind him and traced him, he couldn't help but be distracted. As he turned to see Raven smiling at him, he couldn't help but smile back, forgetting the door as she pulled him downward for a kiss that he already knew was going to go a bit longer.

After sharing what was several long moments, Seth pulled back, taking a few moments to catch a small amount of breath. Still wearing his smile, he leaned forward again to give another kiss, but this one he pulled away from a bit more quickly. He heard....footsteps?

"Mm...I think that the rest of the world might be coming. I'd like to think we'll have more opportunities later..." Seth whispered, gently tracing Raven's cheek as he turned towards where he assumed they would be seeing their guest. And as it turned out, he was not disappointed. A woman with black hair and a red dressed approached the pair, appraising them as she entered the room and then nodding to herself.

"Ah, Lord Seth and Lady Raven....there you are. I was asked to hunt you two down, since you had wandered off from the party....You may call me Rosa." The woman said, giving a small bow in her red dress. "I am happy to make your acquaintance. Now, I won't be wondering what you've been up to around here, but I'm here to make sure you are accounted for, along with making it to the view and your rooms as necessary....whichever you would prefer more, of course. I'm not here to judge, just to make sure you are...behaving." Rosa seemed to be implying quite a bit with her last words.

"Hmph. I guess we are going with you then? To our rooms then. I'd like to be able to see what you did to my things, thanks." Seth replied, obviously not going for what he considered to be bait. As they began to follow the finely dressed woman, Seth gave a quick backward glance and with a small flourish, lit the candles around the orb. "For luck..." Seth whispered with a smirk as they walked towards supposedly their rooms.

During their journey though, they came across Fei and a couple of others, one of which caused Rosa to obviously sigh and roll her eyes as they got closer to the group. Seth thought that they looked somewhat familiar, but he didn't really care for the others except for Fei. Still, they were along for the ride, so Seth figured they were at least worth regarding.

One was the girl that he was pretty sure he had seen Drew was lingering with before, but in some kind of armor or something. Much more different than what he expected her to be in. The other was a man in a bit of a suit who seemed....out of place. As in, even with the finer clothes he seemed to be not suited to be in it. Fei was trying to do something to the guys face, leading Seth to a raised eyebrow as he approached, wondering what Fei had done this time.

[hr]

"Besides, you're right. This was worth it. I will walk with you into the Light itself. Knowing I had this."

"And I would follow you to the coldest of depths because I know you would be with me like this."
Seth's shadow gave a low sigh, feeling an odd...tugging. Like something needed to be taken care of. Or a nagging child. "Do you...feel that? Seems that things are about to change again...But, I would like to linger a moment longer..." The shadow hesitated, not knowing the consequences of staying away for too long, but not wanting to ruin the moment either.

He could always hope that it was just in his head, and that it was nothing at all but his nerves playing tricks on him. It was unlikely, but he could hope all the same that they could remain in the dark spot a little longer.

[hr]

Meanwhile, outside, it seemed everyone was anxious to go at this point. Former maids dressed in all kinds of armors, with some wearing less than great things after likely losing a bet here or there, while others not having weapons, to some being armed to the teeth. Meanwhile in the distance were the centaurs and spirits, many of them in similar outfits as the maids. Many appearing well armed and armored, but others looking foolish or downright ridiculous in likely lost bets.

Edgar was laughing as the centaurs all seemed ready to start charging. He almost seemed to encourage both his rock guards and ladies to sit back and relax as the battle line of the centaurs got prepared. As the lines got ready, an object was brought out towards the middle of the battlefield. A glowing box, which seemed to have a collection of crystals inside which when the box was opened it gave off an odd glow, and for a moment the sky color changed from a red color to a dark blue.

This alone seemed to spur the centaurs to charge, which in turn seemed to make the castle itself suddenly shake as it seemed to realize it was under attack, and it would bring its defenses to fire. Suddenly icy crossbow bolts flew from the castle itself, seemingly not manned by any person. While the centaurs seemed to take the flurry of arrows in stride, what did not get taken in stride was the sudden launching of boulders that began to rain from higher up on the castle, again striking many more centaurs down. They still continued their charge, obviously still energetic but not quite as many had been initially started.

As they finally reached the stone golems, they were met by a force that seemed largely unyielding to the few centaurs that made it. As more centaurs finally managed to get to the battle line, the castle again seemed to retaliate, with suddenly a few small bolts lancing from the castle itself, striking randomly among the groups of spirits and centaurs still charging.

Finally, the ladies got to do fighting of their own, which proved to be just as cruel as the centaurs were in their fighting. Leaping over blades and slashing, cutting, and sometimes even punching at centaurs as they got in striking distance. The battle was obviously not going at all in the centaur's favor, and it showed no signs of turning as long as the castle continued to rain its own form of death upon the fields.

"Here."

"Wha, no, i'm finmnph-" As Joey had his face stuffed full of numbingly cold cotton, the three had collided into another little group. The only familiar face of the three didn't seem all that happy to see him. "Hehheh, there goes another one...BOY I am just making such a reputation for myself!" That infamous smile of his was hidden behind the freezing kerchief currently being held to his face.

"Wonderful, you've found more human-shaped people. Good going Rosa!" His voice came out stuffy and muffled from behind the cloth, but it did little to mask the lil' scamp's enthusiasm. "Gonna assume you two're mages too? Boy, is it refreshing to be in the company of like minded individuals! I'm Horatio, but you can call me Joey!" The overall enthusiasm was fake, by the way. With one hand occupied on handkerchief duty, he used his free hand to shake with. First the guy, then the- "Helluuuuoh~" He sidled up to the dark robed girl, as smoothly as he could given his current status. He took up her hand, similar to the way he took up Fei's just seconds ago. "And what might your name be, beautiful?" His eyes quickly took a scan of her person as he attempted wooing her.

For best results, a Mage seeking to learn control over steam should find a Pyromancer willing to assist in the following experiments. If a suitable Pyromancer cannot be found, a bonfire or campfire is recommended. Gabriel glanced around... there was a fireplace set in one of the walls, opposite the fountain. Firewood and paper scraps were neatly arranged inside, waiting for someone to set the stack alight. "Okay, the fireplace will do."

A water source is also recommended for the first forays into steam spells. Set yourself up a base camp, if you will. The fountain covered that quite easily.

The first thing a steam-inclined Mage needs to master, before one can begin learning to produce steam independently, is the ability to keep a steam cloud contained, before it can be allowed to expand and lose its temperature. The simplest way to carry out such an experiment is as follows:

Gather a small water sphere of medium density, no more than two inches in diameter for the first attempts. Bring it to your fire source, and hold the sphere close enough to the flame to heat it. Allow the water to increase in temperature and gradually evaporate while maintaining a hold over it: the sphere will decrease in size as water turns to its gaseous state. As the water evaporates, you must maintain a hold on it and resist a portion of the heat impacting on it. With practice, you will be able to keep larger bodies of water in an evaporated state until the steam cools - which is not long.

Practical Application/Task: Master containing the steam cloud generated from a four-inch sphere.

Gabriel hummed. Applying fire was the easiest method, of course, but how to prevent the evaporated water from stifling it while it remained in proximity? That question was probably why the book recommended working with a Pyromancer: in fact, working together probably created a better end result, much like Fei and Drew did with their combined lightning. Although steam was more about heated water than a combination of water and fire. So it couldn't hurt to try on his own, Gabriel reasoned. He cast about for something to light a fire... there were candles about the place, but none of them were lit. Maybe a matchbox? He began searching the room in a bit further detail, only to find nothing suitable. "Dangit... and everyone's outside for the fighting, so I can't get someone to help out," he thought aloud as he emerged from the bathroom.

There was a genteel tap on his door before one of Edgar's ladies entered: a red-haired girl wearing a maid's outfit and looking thoroughly miffed about something before she noticed the room's occupant. "Oh! Master Gabriel, I'm sorry. I didn't expect you here. It's just that I've been assigned the post-party cleaning duties... again. I'll come back later, when the room's empty, if that's all right."

"It's fine. Um... would you please light the fire before you go?"

"Why? It's not even close to evening, master Gabriel; the room will be stifling hot in minutes." The girl produced a matchbox from her pocket all the same.

"I need a heat source as part of a project I've just started working on, while my friends and I wait for the battle to conclude outside," Gabriel explained. "Couldn't find something to start the fire myself. As for the heat, I'll leave the door and windows open."

"If you're sure... well, I'll light half of it for you and leave the other half for when it dies down." The maid knelt before the fireplace, removing some of the firewood and setting it aside before she struck a match and breathed on it, sending a thin stream of fire from the match into the fireplace. Gabriel raised his eyebrows, but said nothing.

The maid straightened up, tossed her hair to clear it from her face, and curtsied before she left the room with Gabriel's thanks. The Hydromancer placed his book down by the fireplace, scooped a sphere's worth of water out of the fountain with cupped hands, and set to work.

Drew looked up as the sky turned blue, shocked to see such a drastic change. "What in the world was in that box?!" he said, looking down to the field to discover the battle had already begun. Seeing the castle itself retaliate against the centaurs astonished him, but he couldn't help but smirk, thinking that this was what Alice was referring to. "Glad I could be of some assistance..." he muttered, surprised at just how one-sided this seemed to be. He recalled that it had been said that Edgar had lost the previous encounter. With stuff like this, it was hard to imagine him ever losing.

Once the inhabitants of the castle actually started battling, Drew took a moment, trying to see if he could spot any of the maids from here. Some did somewhat stand out, but the distance combined with the hectic battle made it hard. After a few seconds, he decided it wasn't worth the effort, sitting back and just viewing the bigger picture.

"Seeeeeeeeth!" Fei would have ran up and hugged him like usual, but that weird girl was next to him. Instead she inched around to his other side, keeping a careful eye on Raven. "Look what I got..." she whispered, showing him the book secretly, before putting it back in her bag, throwing another look at the kleptomaniac to be sure that he didn't swipe it while she was, and also to make sure he was still distracting the scary woman. "Where have you been? I haven't seen you in a while. Guess what?? My shadow is named Evie now! We decided that it was kind of weird for us both to be Fei, so... her name is Evie now, OK?"

"Your rooms are right over there, mi'lady. If there's nothing else, I must be getting to the battle..." Alice bowed and took her leave.

Jade looked around the room for a while. She had only seen snatches and glimpses of it when Lord Edgar had gone in. There were several artifacts, many of which appeared... dangerous.
"Get Edgar now."
The maid took her place next to Alexander, dusting off her skirt. "Mi'lord, I understand your concerns, but the Lord Edgar is currently on the frontlines in battle... but I shall try to relay your message as soon as possible." she bowed, walking off.

Drew could see most of the maids they had met in the castle. Alice was found easily due to Drew knowing what she had been wearing, but... was that a... veil on her head? Perhaps more interesting were the crags of earth that seemed to shoot up when she thrust her polearm out. It was quite a surreal scene, with the gusts from the rocks throwing her veil around her. From its pristine condition, he could tell that she was not wounded yet.

Isa had a different style with her polearm and shield, spraying what looked like daggers around when she swung. On closer inspection, they were icicles, which froze part of the centaurs it hit. She looked like she was having significantly more trouble fighting, but she didn't look injured... Gabriel might have noticed that she was using her weapon in her off hand, and her shield in her dominant one. She seemed to be doing ok so far.

Onyx, who still looked surprisingly normal, was fighting with an ax. She paused to blow plumes of fire at her opponents, singeing the grass.

The shadow did a small amount of stumbling as Alexander helped it get away from the glowing artifacts, and sighed as he finally began to fade slowly back to one general coloration and existence. Looking himself over, and giving himself a few reassuring pats to make sure that he was all there, he gave a small smile at Alexander.

"I'm not sure what I owe you at this point, Alexander, but it is important that I pay you back for this. These....things. They do not belong here Alexander. I do not know why they are here, but they do not belong....anywhere, if I could have my say. Yet here they are, and I am not sure what we can do to them. They are...wrong." The slowly disappearing Alexander said, glancing back worriedly into the room.

"I only hope the others did not encounter things like this. It is...strange in this world, and I did not expect this, and I imagine the others did not either...."

Seth shook the hand of the strange fellow that had gone with Fei, apparently knowing who the lady they were with was, and apparently not gifted in the arts of fire from the handshake. It struck him halfway familiar the way that the apparent mage carried himself. He obviously wasn't....official? Whatever he could call it, it seemed that the mage had quite the interesting way of introducing himself to the ladies, which might have explained the rolling eyes look that Rosa had given him upon approaching.

Seth couldn't help himself but laugh as Joey tried to be smooth upon his approach to Raven, and wondered what she would do at this point as he hoped the Nightshade would make sure that Joey would need the handkerchief where he had it now. But, for now Seth was willing to see what was going on in the stay of the castle for Fei, especially as she apparently had a book to share, which struck him as a little odd.

"Hey there, Fei. Good to see you are finding all kinds of things to keep busy." Seth replied with a grin. "Guessing its a special book....but I've been doing a bit of exploring. It is good to hear that your shadow finally has a good name like yours! I haven't gotten one for mine yet....and I haven't seen him in a while."

"Excuse me, my lords and ladies, but you should be getting to your rooms before the battle gets in full swing? I can't have you all wandering about....Especially you, Horatio, as I would rather not be responsible for any trouble that you might cause." Rosa said somewhat pointedly, obviously intending to cut the conversations short, and get the mages to their rooms.

As each mage was guided to their room, they would find their clothing and other effects all there, all seemingly have been thoroughly cleaned, fixed up, and almost...enchanted. Something was obviously better about the clothing that they had brought there, and the rooms themselves were simple guest rooms. A bed, a closet, and a mirror in each room. As the battle continued on outside, Drew eventually grew bored of his waiting about and eventually made his way down to his room.

[hr]

A few moments later...

As Alexander stepped from the artifact room, he saw Edgar and Jade, along with Onyx and a woman bearing a large sword. While Edgar did not appear to be in the worst of moods, it was quite apparent he was not pleased upon seeing the door open that Alexander stepped through.

"Alexander." Edgar said, giving a small gesture to the door. "I do not much...appreciate the destruction of well worked doors, especially to more private chambers. I've been told that it was important, and some life or death situation. Though, I wonder as to what kind of life or death situation is happening behind a locked door." Edgar continued somewhat coldly.

"So, I can't let you or your comrades stay here, and must send you out of my castle. I do not see this life that you apparently needed to save, and I don't see how things in that room would do any harm unless someone had decided to start trying to...tamper with my devices. Now, I have a battle to attend to, so I expect you to do your duties and make sure your comrades are aware that they will need to be leaving as soon as possible. Now, if you'll excuse me..." Without leaving much more of an opening, Edgar turned and began to head back to the outside of the castle, and back to the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Onyx and the swordswoman, seemed more interested in making sure that Alexander and Jade made their way back to the guest rooms and not wander off anywhere else as they got back to that location. The swordswoman said a quick suggestion that sounded more like a command.

"Gather them up and get ready to leave. We have a battle outside to tend to as well, and can't waste time being here."

Drew had made it down to the ground floor, finding his shadow hovering around. Something seemed to stir it from its comfortable position. "Oi. Good to see you've been having fun. So what say we head back and wait for this battle to finish u-" he was interrupted by the shadow floating over to where Alexander and Edgar were speaking. "What the hell?" he muttered before speaking up.

"Hey, Alexander, what the heck happened to the shadow?" It was then he heard Edgar's response. "W-wait! Hold on!" He had to admit this was hard to argue against. Fucking hell, Alexander, couldn't you have used your damned head? Some smart guy... "Look, I get it. My companion has messed up. But he did have something he needed to do. That shadow there is clearly in pain and..." Edgar's puzzled look really said everything Drew needed to know. "You can't see it, can you? So that's what Fei was talking about." He took a second, hesitating to try and think up what to say. By now he probably looked insane. "You're sure you can't see them? Nothing at all? Like, one that looks like me is literally an inch in front of your face." he said, and sure enough, Drew's shadow was waving his hand in front of Edgar, amused by his perceived status of invisibility, testing his luck and trying to poke him on the forehead.

Drew sighed, but managed to improvise a quick response. "Ok, my companion broke into a private chamber. I can assure you he didn't tamper with anything. He perceived a great danger, but that's not an excuse to act impolite." He said, glaring angrily at Alexander. "Negotiation would probably be a waste of time, and I know you're a busy man, so I'd at least like to request one last private conversation with you AFTER the combat has resolved." As much as he wanted to stay the night and rest, he knew that current circumstances, along with Edgar's sudden change in demeanor would make convincing him far more difficult. "A simple audience alone. My companions will leave as you have ordered." He said, once again glaring at Alexander.

He then decided to try and use what leverage he had. "The battle is currently very much in your favor, thanks in no small part to my assistance. I would like to think that could grant me at least some moments of conversation." He gave a respectful bow, hoping he would listen. By this point he was almost convinced they couldn't stay the night, but if he could get one last audience he could assure them safe passage, and maybe even some supplies. And maybe even patch things up so there weren't an particularly harsh feelings left over.
