And why did they choose the PS3 over the XBox?

Oh God, my head...
1: I have to agree with your wonderment on that one
2: one of the guys only had a pistol so I guess he wanted to be more badass
3: asking why they bought a PS3 is like asking why anyone has ever bought a PS3
OT : i guess they needed to steal SOMETHING, or else they would look reaaly stupid.

why didnt they keep the kid, ask 100.000 $ for him and BUY a ps3 (and some games)?

This sounds like a huge cover for:

"Sorry, dad, I was forced at gun-point to steal your credit card, to buy a PS3, even though in actual fact I really just want one and am now keeping it at a friends house and needed an excuse, didn't think you'd actualy GO for it though..."

Watch out kids or armed men are going to make you buy shotguns and PS3's for them. Set up neighborhood watchs and special police divisions.

Bethca Jack Thompson was one of those guys so he can claim video games made him go violent for the PS3.

i can see this

but no they would have been the stupidist if they tried to get ransome money

that never works.......
if you go to the cops it never works. But for those people who are dumb enough to comply with the takers demands it usually works because they never report it.

Also in mexico. works alot there.

From what i get, the console is gone in unknown direction. He could have made it up as an elaborate gambit to get it for himself, but it could be true just as well. I have three versions:

A) The kidnapped teen was a huge Microsoft fan, and they MADE HIM DO IT. For the lulz.

B) It's a new marketing ploy by Sony, because come on... many of those PR guys are batshit bonkers.

C) Those armed goons wanted to play Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time THAT desperately. If that's the case, i can understand them.
I can see their defense right now: "Your honor, we plead guilty, but we really wanted to play Uncharted 2"

Seems like Yarkosky made up some imaginary friends to steal some jewelry, take his stepfather's credit card, and buy himself a PS3.

Stepfather of kid: Kyle, why do I have a $300 bill on my credit card for a "Sony Playstation 3"?

Kid: Er...see...well I was just driving over to a friend's house, and these guys, they...um...kinda kidnapped me, and they forced me to take your credit card and buy a PS3 for them- all at gunpoint.

Stepfather of kid: Kyle...that's the most truthful thing I've ever heard! There is no questioning the veracity of your statement, and I will call the police immediately.

Kid [thinking]: Phew. That was a close one.

Mother of kid: Honey, what's this big black box next to the T.V.?

Kid: Um, that's a blu-ray player. I got it for you guys because I love you.

Mother of kid: Aww, you're so sweet, Kyle.

Kid [thinking]: Well I guess I'm not completely lying...

I can see this happening.
I know of one guy that had a money clip stolen from him from some guy that was next to him in a convenience store. He claims that he pulled out his clip which had a $1 and a $5. Paid with the fiver and put the change of $4 back onto the clip. He walks out and then a teen that was in the store and watched him pay, hit him over the head with something solid from behind and then stole his clip. The cops caught the idiot since the teen frequents the store regularly ... but that was just five dollars. Why would you steal that?

So yeah, I can see this as being true. People do stupid things for little payoff.

Playstation 3: The alternative to guns, doing its part to keep streets safe since 2009.
I guess it is true that gaming is a true lifestyle. So much so that it has its own criminal niche. Some people just have to have one.

Oh God, I hope the criminals didn't make him play Lair. That'd scar the kid for the rest of his life.
Then the criminals can be tried as terrorists! Off to Gitmo with them!
