Honestly, I'm kind of pleasantly surprised at where MS seems to be going with Kinect. They seem to just maybe be realizing that it's not something that will interest the hardcore, at least until they come up with some sort of solid idea for it, so they're focusing on what it actually can do.

Sony with it's Move, on the other hand, seem stuck on the idea that their motion control will somehow benefit the hardcore.. and are shoving Move support into whatever they can get their hands on. This despite the fact that Nintendo has already proven motion controls don't really play nice with hardcore games.
Pretty much this. I love "hardcore" gaming (I love the smell of n00b in the morning), but I also love busting out The Sims 3 and just fucking around for a while. And I think Kinect is perfect for that market. A lot of people have written it off far too early. AND YOU'RE ALL CYNICAL FUCKS. (lol, I jest... Not really. You're all cynical)
yeah it's not even out yet, why keep slamming it.

just because we're all a bunch of fat balding nerds, sitting in our wanking chariots pretending to be industry analysts.

guess what due to the gimmick factor the wii PRINTS MONEY or used to and the gimmick has lasted YEARS and has made MILLIONS/BILLIONS.

so er... yeah while you guys scoff at anything less than a mmofpsrprts from golden scrote studios my 8 year old kid brother goes "HOLY CRAP IM WAVING MY HANDS ABOUT AND IM IN THE TV! LOOK DAD, MUM, THE GUY IN THE TV IS ME AND IM GIVING THAT AVATAR THE FINGER!" and so do all their buddies and their yuppy parents.

imo it is breaking into the wii market but only because ITS A GOLDEN FOUNT OF PROFIT.

tbh as soon as a game comes out that lets me do martial arts sparring against a tv I will break out the ninja suit I swear....

I've blatantly buffed the kinect not because I think it is good but because I want to be objective. I also think it's pretty good.

+ using that paint program to make a human dong stencil out of some pillows and an afro wig.

A lot of people are doing exactly what they did before the Wii came out.

"It will never catch on, people dont want to flail their arms around to play a game, people want to relax when playing games"

We all know how well the Wii did whether we like it or not. There are just more people out there that like this kind of thing than we care to imagine. To me Kinect is more like a Wii style add on to the Xbox. At the moment in my family me and my brother are the only ones who play on the PS3 and 360. Add PS Move and Kinect to the equation and i have no doubt the audience will grow.

Woo. Kinectimals on my 360... looking forward to that... damn younger sister.
I would actually argue the opposite, so many people who played the Wii for only 5 minutes were going "OHMIGOD, IT'S LIKE SO ACCURATE IT WAS LIKE I WAS REALLY PLAYING BOWLING OHJESUS IT'S GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE WHOLE WOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRLDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!"

After the initial buzz of the Wii to wear off, say about 6 months to a year or so, people just didn't care anymore because the motion controls were rarely properly implemented and didn't provide any real feedback. Kind of like the touch screens, the iTouch was going "OMIGOD, TOUCH SCREEEEEEEEEEEENS!" and now everyone's doing it so who cares. Sales notwithstanding of course, after all, platform shoes sold really well I'm sure :p

Way too much irrational, "MOTION CONTROLS ARE RUINING VIDEO GAMES," crap in this thread.

OT: I would most DEFINITELY get Kinect... If it didn't cost $150. That's just too much for something that I don't see myself using very much. I'm very glad it works as well as they had claimed it did though.

Yeah screw kinect. Honestly i just want the new "slim" xbox and them to make online playing free and have the special shit that ps3 is doing
So you'll pay $300 for something that doesn't add any substantial benefit to the gaming experience... But not half as much for a new program that overhauls the dashboard interface and allows for an entirely new way to play party games?

3 Things From This Thread I Need To Refute:

1.) You can't make "deep" games with Kinect is total BULLSH*T

2.) "Deep" games are the only games worthy of time or money is personal OPINION

3.) Motion control games are going to hurt the industry is unfounded SPECULATION

Like I've said quite a few times before. Kinect is fun. Of course it's fun, how could it not be fun? But what it isn't is deep. You can't make deep, complex games using Kinect. It just won't work with today's technology.
I don't think you can rule out any game having a deep or complex story based on the controller it uses, Silent Hill Shattered Memories is a great addition to the series and motion controls don't cheapen it at all.
Yes, but Silent Hill Shattered Memories is on the Wii, which has buttons. Kinect does not have buttons, Kinect has a camera. You couldn't make a Silent Hill game on Kinect unless you massively simplified it, because for a start, how would you move? Walk in front of Kinect? That would get incredibly tedious and totally break the atmosphere. This is why the Wii and to a lesser extent, Move, at least are able to create reasonably complex games, annoying as they may sometimes be. They have buttons. Movement buttons, action buttons, stuff like that.
Before I even read this thread I had imagined that Kinect would be a great platform for survival horror games; by their nature these games are slow paced, with bursts of action interrupting a lot of exploration. Here's how you could make a great hardcore style survival horror game on Kinect using controls that have already been demonstrated from other Natal/Kinect games:

Kinect Survival Horror 1st or 3rd Person: (Try to picture this or act it out as I describe it)

In your avatar's left hand you hold a flash light. Your left hand will correspond to this control. This will be used to illuminate in-game areas but also be responsible for directional control explained below.

In your avatar's right hand you hold a blunt weapon (bat, crowbar, knife) Your right hand will correspond to this control.

Your avatar will always face forward and forward movement will be controlled by placing your right foot forward.

NAVIGATION: Think of this like running in Shenmue on Dreamcast. In Shenmue you hold down the right trigger to move and control direction with the analog stick. Your right foot is the Dreamcast trigger while your left arm is the analog directional control.

Moving your character forward is triggered by placing your foot forward (demonstrated to work with Burnout demo). To stop moving take your foot back and stand in place. This handles forward Z-axis movement.

Direction is controlled by where you point your left hand. This handles left/right X-axis movement. (see Kinect Hub control)

Camera (up/down Y-Axis) is controlled by where you point your left hand. This means your avatar will always face forward and always point the flashlight beam in the direction you are moving or looking. The flashlight beam serves as your cursor or focus point in the game world.

If camera control with left hand is not satisfactory a more complex camera control in Kinect Survival Horror could include head tracking (see Forza Kinect). This would give you freedom to look in one direction while moving in a different direction.

ACTION:

In your avatar's right hand is a crowbar or any blunt object you discover in the world. You control this attack with your right arm. This is pretty straight forward attack like you would in Condemned Criminal Origins or Half Life 2. Automatic weapons can also be used in this hand simply by pointing your right hand in the direction you want to shoot. (See Child of Eden) Place right hand at your side to stop firing your weapon.

Your character may be limited to only holding a few weapons at once in his inventory. To change weapons put your right hand behind your back. When you pull out your hand you have a new weapon from your inventory.

If your avatar is attacked by an enemy from behind you can do a 180 degree turn by quickly swinging your left arm across the screen. (similar to selecting menu items in Dance Central) The in-game avatar would swing around 180 hitting any enemies with his flashlight.

EXPLORATION:

Your avatar can crouch to inspect things on the ground by you crouching (See Forza Kinect) and hovering one of your hands over the item you want to pick up. A menu choice will then pop up to keep the item or leave it. Which you confirm by hovering.

That covers most of the basic controls of attacking, exploring the world, and 3D movement. Just see the Burnout Project Natal demo [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_jeIpCJv1U] where you could move the car in any direction that you wanted (forward, back, left, right) just by stepping forward or backwards with one foot. This idea that all Kinect games need to be on rails is completely false.

And quickly points 2 and 3...

2.) I have spent just as much time playing casual arcade games like Geometry Wars, Pac-Man CE, and Peggle on my Xbox 360 as I have Halo multiplayer. The idea that a game has to have a deep complex story or control scheme to be worthy of your time and attention is garbage. I would not describe Geometry Wars, Peggle, or Pac-Man CE as "deep" games but they are extremely addictive. If I was stranded on a desert island and could only play one game for the rest of my life it would be any of those arcade games before something like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. So if something like Kinect Sports scratches that addictive arcadey itch, I just may end up spending more time playing that than any game released this year (save Plants vs. Zombies).

3.) Nobody knows what the fallout is going to be of the casual game revolution Nintendo started with the DS and Wii. The DS and the Wii have brought both a ton of unpopular shovelware and some great innovative games that I never would have thought could be so popular. So long as the cream of the crop continues to rise to the top I think the industry will only become more profitable over time. I haven't felt that hardcore games are disappearing because of the Wii. Personally I appreciate the fact that the game industry is getting more variety. The PS3 and 360 have a bad case of sequelitis and desperately need more variety.

Real "hardcore" gamers play every type of game and enjoy the variety.

I just wanna be able to navigate through the dashboard like Tony Stark.
Suddenly, I feel immense desire towards a PC release of Kinect.
Get ready for it. This IS going to happen and is probably no more than a year away. Ballmer has already stated that Xbox is only the beginning for the Kinect technology. They are going into it with both feet, similar to the 360, and have faith that this kind of "natural user interface" is the future for PCs.
