They might consider a deal. On the other hand, Kotick has no leverage at all with which to challange the way Microsoft currently do things with XBL. So I see no reason for them to suddenly try to accomodate Activisions attempts to get in on online income that might impact their on their own revanue.
Thats the thing, he can't step into Microsofts business and XBL, but he can still put a Subscription fee on it. As in, you go on Xbox to play the game, but Activision is getting money from it. Microsoft doesn't suffer at all while Activision is getting money. Essentially, you are paying for a gold membership and a CoD membership.

The funny thing is that is what probably will happen. The average CoD player probably won't pay for it. He is digging his own grave of the franchise.

Between November 2009 and April 2010, gamers have logged 1.7 billion hours of online play on Modern Warfare 2, and Kotick believes that the majority of Xbox 360 owners are playing for Gold memberships on Xbox Live because of the Call of Duty series.
God, how stupid can a person be? Kotick sets new records for stupidity every single day.
If he tells Microsoft to give Activision some of the profit, I hope they tell him this: "You and your company can fuck right off."

They don't make money on PSN, neither does Sony, I can't see Kotick complaining about that. Though he will find a way to.

So, because he thinks that Xbox Live keeps his games from being accessible, he would replace their subscription with his own? Good luck with that you fucking moron.

So pointless! Why would people pay for something they've gotten free for months? That's like putting a monthly fee on a pair of pants after you buy it! Even if you love those pants why would you want to pay monthly to use them when you can get potentially better pants that don't have a fee for the same initial price. Even Kotick should be able to put 2 and 2 together and figure out the flaw in this foolish plan.

Geez, Kotick is really trying to scrape every penny out of consumers, eh?
Nevermind already having a hefty profit at the end of each quarter, he just wants more.

Somebody on the board of directors make a motion to shut this guy up. He is not someone who should be talking to media, or anyone with access to the outside world. Going from "We want to change our image of being jerks!" to "We want to rip every cent from our customer base with over-priced map-packs and needless subscription fees." isn't smart PR.

I earnestly hope that Infinity Ward's departure, and eventual new game development, teaches Kotick some humility.
I'm surprised that they already haven't sacked him for gross incompetence yet. The man is Emperor Palpatine in disguise.

Really?

And all this time I figured people had gold accounts for Netflix, DLC, demos, and a whole bunch of other neat stuff. There's also this little game called Halo that also one of the most played games online.

This is classic greed.

"We filled 5 giant money pits, but I want MORE!"
Greed isn't the problem... there is nothing wrong with wanting more money.

It's just THE WAY that Kotick is going about it is exploitative, controlling and devaluing.

He is using bad capitalism or control and limitations to FORCE a value rather than create an inherent value to justify a price.

He wants a part of the online network that MICROSOFT maintains! They set it up, it is managed by their servers, hosted on their consoles and with their infrastructure and

Microsoft SHOULD give access to Live Multiplayer for free, the cost per user is not 1000th of the $60 fee per year. But Microsoft control the water well, they can charge whatever price they think they can get away with to let people drink there.

If people are forced later on to play CoD online, its just gonna drive away more customers then it will bring. They are just gonna end up losing more money and Kotick won't be so happy.

The funniest part of all this is he wants to make even more money off of CoD and it's all profit, except for what is payed to the people who develop the patches. But with what I've seen from the patches, they probally hired illegals for it anyway. So basically he wants more profit, I can understand companies that release DLC that cost money, when they have to keep up dedicated servers for the game, but MW2 is P2P.

Edit: Didn't mean to quote.

While I dislike Kotick just like the other guy, remember people that they aren't there for public service. They are there to make money just like any other company in the world.
1) Yes, of course they are.

2) Look at Valve - totally different business model (i.e. treat your customers with care) and they're rolling in it.
Well yes, but it is still a choice they have to make, and they have the right to do whatever they want.

Don't like don't buy it.

Agreed - but it's still better for everyone when there's not a huge rift between developers and their communities.

Ofcourse, I totally agree about that but then again, we are not the one who can make shitloads of cash out of this. Wouldn't you like shitloads of cash?

How about improving it by paying the people who made it?

Or not kicking their asses about?

Seriously, Mr. Kotick, do you actually know what a computer game is?

Meaning he doesn't want Microsoft getting a slice of the pie that would be a monthly subscription for playing CoD online.

What's next?

Are porn sites going to want more control from internet service providers because 60% of internet traffic is used for porn?

That statistic is made up, but you get the idea.
Kotick's stat is probably made up too.

Maybe if they actually had DEDICATED servers to pay for, he could pull this strategy on PC.
Is there a complaint thing on the Activision site? Cause it'd be awesome if Escapists could just flood their inbox with requests to FIRE Bobby Kotick :D
