Here's a point that people just don't get, no matter how many times we beat it into your heads.
The first and main thing that the boycott wanted to accomplish was the further and total support for L4D that almost all other Valve games get.
It was not to ***** about L4D2 and what they did or did not know about it.
The boycott wanted further support for the game, which at the time of the boycotts conception, there was little mention of.
-No announcements of further campaigns
-SDK promised with release, but not released nor given a date of release (SDK base is essential for modding)
-No announcements of further additions to the game
There was however talk on Valves side of the type of support that games like Team Fortress Two had (new levels, new weapons, new abilities and achievements for those of you that don't play TF2) being given to L4D.
Those things in TF2 were announced and in progress of being added to the game.
Where was the same level of support hinted at for L4D, nothing was announced, but L4D2 was announced.
The fact that L4D was a hit on PC and now the consoles, the lack of announcements for updates, the promised things not being provided (SDK base), and the announcement of L4D2 and its features, were all pretty good signs that Valve was moving on.
This is a logical conclusion (not the only one, but still one) that the boycotters came to.
I'm not gonna lie, there were demands made about L4D2 in the boycott. But these were mostly if Valve in fact did abandon L4D and had moved on. In that case the boycotters wanted some concessions to be made.
So this boycotts resolution has nothing to do with the main boycotters getting to play L4D2, the upset was with L4D! And though the chance of this boycott actually effecting Valve was slim, it got media attention enough to get the attention of Valve. They did start announcing and working on more content for L4D, and reassured the communities that they were not being left behind. These are things that Valve would not have done if the Boycott wasn't created and got attention. In this matter, the Boycott was effective (not all of the Boycotts demands were settled), but when its the Gamers vs. The Company how often is anything done, Hardly Ever. So I consider the boycott a success.
