Am I the only one who is imagining the people who just implemented the anti-hack feature in Steam fist pumping right now?
It was just a misunderstanding by the reporter, hardly a devious plot to stir up controversy when we haven't even made up facts to support that argument.WilliamRLBaker said:So you just wanted hits so you made a sensationalist article backed up by no facts...damn escapist what happend to you? *and yes I know you've updated said article doesn't change the original intent and you updated just to make out you weren't expecting massive hits*
Don't say that! Don't even FUCKING say that!Waffle-Speed said:Get ready, Steam is next...
You clearly do not understand the point of my post. I am not saying I don't understand why these titles have been so over-the-top, I'm saying that the idea that news networks HAVE to do it is idiotic. Yes, it draws in viewers, but it's dishonest and doesn't actually improve understanding of the situation, especially for individuals who don't take the time to read entire stories.killamanhunter said:You clearly do not understand news. Thanks to being a communication major I know all about the crap news stations do to get viewers.Raeil said:Good God, Escapist. Please stop with the idiotic, over-spun headlines. The PSN has been hacked, yes, but you'll notice that they've specifically said that "there is no evidence" that credit card info has been stolen. Thus, Sony did NOT state that all of the PSN data has been stolen. With regards to this, it's a phishing scam, which does NOT entail "their credit cards have been compromised."
I understand you have to get hits on the site, but you're helping no one by exaggerating the truth here.
I still think the original information release was clear, and pretty hard to accidentally construe in the way it was, but at least it was changed.Kross said:It was just a misunderstanding by the reporter, hardly a devious plot to stir up controversy when we haven't even made up facts to support that argument.
We can make much better fake news then this is what I'm trying to say.
I completely agree with this. The Escapist has some of the best editorial content around, but it bleeds into the news articles all too often.Mouse_Crouse said:I must admit I am really starting to get annoyed with the News from The Escapist. Honestly guys, I come to the 'news" section for NEWS. Not for some opinion piece. More and more news articles are getting opinions interjected into them. I started to notice more and more bias and opinion recently and thought about commenting, but it is getting to ridiculous levels.
Example by John Funk in a recent News Article (notice it's not game review)
"I'd also say that the difference between the Street Fighter series and the Mortal Kombat series is that one is great and one is mediocre at best, but that's just me."
I'm sorry but I don't care what you think about which game is better, because it's an article about Western Design Philosophy. If I wanted OPINIONS about a game being good or not. I'd find a review. Not an unrelated news article. This kind of stuff has no place in news. And before someone jumps on the "oh you are just a butthurt fanboy" wagon, I have played NEITHER of those 2 fighting games.

Since when does "Users may receive potential phishing attempts" equal "their credit cards have been compromised by hackers" or even "you've been hacked"?
Phishing is commonplace; the only notable factor here is that it's being executed in a relatively closed environment. It's hardly the same as being directly hacked, and it's not an immediate compromise of your credit card details; it only works if you fall for it.
I hate to be one of those people waving the "bad journalism" banner, but this article makes a lot of arbitrary leaps that look somewhat like an attempt to cash in on the PSN controversy.
You fail to see how it's newsworthy? Good, then I got my point across.Kalezian said:danpascooch said:If you follow his source, it says these are "phishing" attempts, meaning you have to actually be stupid enough to send them your credit card number on purpose. Making this article completely fucking incorrect.Kalezian said:Proof that Call of Duty will ruin your life.
Seriously though, now people can claim how buggy CoD is and not be laughed at.
unless you are like me, and will laugh at them anyways.
But really, I would love to know how exactly someone could access that information from a simple message on XBL. That sounds interesting to say the least, its one thing to break into a server containing the information, but to target individuals through a game exploit itself?
Documentation please.
if its just phishing, I fail to see how this is news worthy then.
But then again, I did have the unfortunate honor of playing a World at War zombie map with someone who had modded their 360, and thus giving me the achievements I actually wanted to try to get.
So maybe what happened is the modded 360 player resets your rank and scores and then demands you to pay him back to get said ranks and scores back.
either way, it now sounds more like doucebaggery than actual exploitative players.
I mean, its like if someone here got an e-mail from a Nigerian millionaire and then are shocked to learn that the person was fake.
As many times as it takes for you to go back and edit your post to specify these hackers instead of saying all hackers.Ilikemilkshake said:Jesus how many times am i gonna be quoted on this, Im talking about THESE hackers. I did that quite a while ago actually, well before i made the post you quotedmjc0961 said:As many times as it takes for you to go back and edit your post to specify these hackers instead of saying all hackers.Ilikemilkshake said:Jesus how many times am i gonna be quoted on this, Im talking about THESE hackers.
