You guys do realize that there are more than one group of hackers and that most hackers are independent of one another right? You sound as though you believe that "Hackers" is one group of ten guys that run every illegal computer activity in the world.
Jesus how many times am i gonna be quoted on this, Im talking about THESE hackers. I know not all hackers are bad, im talking about these ones. People keep quoting me saying not all hackers are bad, all im trying to say is not all hackers are good.

NO ONE HAS EVER SUPPORTED HACKERS WHO STEAL OTHER PEOPLES MONEY OR IDENTITIES!

Im talking about the hackers that have been in the news this week, people still seem to think they're the good guys and Sony and MS are the bad guys.
Sony IS a bad guy in a lot of ways. Sony is infamous for taking DRM as far as they possibly can, often to the point where you're effectively leasing whatever they market without any of the consumer protections afforded to normal lessees.

I don't mean to imply that attacking Sony's infrastructure is an appropriate or even effective way of dealing with their customer hostility, because it isn't. I suspect that whoever's responsible for the latest attack on sony isn't ideologically motivated.

I don't really see MS as bad so much as incompetent. have you been to windows support lately? most unhelpful place I've ever seen.
I don't know if that's incompetency, more like apathy.

They just want to piss you off until you leave them alone, so it's worse, lol

Proof that Call of Duty will ruin your life.

Seriously though, now people can claim how buggy CoD is and not be laughed at.

unless you are like me, and will laugh at them anyways.

But really, I would love to know how exactly someone could access that information from a simple message on XBL. That sounds interesting to say the least, its one thing to break into a server containing the information, but to target individuals through a game exploit itself?

Documentation please.
If you follow his source, it says these are "phishing" attempts, meaning you have to actually be stupid enough to send them your credit card number on purpose. Making this article completely fucking incorrect.

What the fuck is going on here?
How are both Sony AND Microsoft so incompetant that hackers can stroll in like this (IN UNISON) and take up shop in their networks.

I find this funny after all the Xbox fanboys trying to say "PSN is shit because it's free" and now there's a possibility that their personal info was stolen....on a service they paid for.

Wonder if it's the same people who got the PSN...

Lol, this is just hilarious seeing how xboxfanboys bashed PSN the other day

Crap, I've been playing cod recently as well. At least I didnt give my bank details to Microsoft and so far I haven't received any messages.

Here's hoping we get an all clear by the time the new map pack comes out, I want-I need, my badass Robert englund zombie killing action.

I need it.

Also, can anyone give me a clear idea of what kind of stuff I need to look out for? I'm not good with technology, and I'm paranoid, so I want to be on my guard.

This is totally Microsoft's fault
Now where are those guys who called the security in PS3 incompetent?

so first im seriously worried about my credit card on PSN and NOWWW after playing a long session of cod and seeing people that are trying to sell phishing scams i read this so either way im fucked :( thanks a lot internet

EVERYTHING GETTIN' HACKED!

What dark wizardry is at work here?
Everyone listen the fuck up, because this article is blatantly wrong. If you follow his source, it says this is a "Phishing" scam. Which means that they send you an XBL message asking for your credit card number in exchange for 10th prestige or something and you have to be stupid enough to send your credit card number to them in a message

That is not hacking in any sense of the word, the article is built to scare people, probably by someone who is a PS3 fan and pissed at the hate Sony is getting.

This is beyond annoying. Why do people feel they have the right to invade the one area of life that feels safe from the outside world? (ignore the fact it's a FPS for a second) First the PSN and now this? Seriously why cant hackers just put their computer knowledge to something useful instead of messing about with something that spreads joy, which they clearly don't have.
we do do that (note I'm not a xbox or ps3 hacker I'm a corporate pen tester tho its almost the same) but one of the first rules of the Internet is -nothing is safe! if you have a console with 20 mill (as a example) users you are painting a fairly big target on your back even if only 10% of the 20 mill have credit cards active
my point is you cant avoid ageing consoles get hacked but what you can do it be aware of mails you get like if you use Gmail right click and press view source if something looks fishy don't open it mark it as a phishing attempt after all its better to be safe then sorry

my last point is we are not all bad people but in all walks of life there are those who chose to do evil instead of do good we cant do anything about this but we can start by not lumping all hackers together

Nice secure system there Sony. Way to fuck up. At least RRoD only killed your system and didn't give out all your information at the same time.

Oh and I am still supporting the people who did this. How do you leave such a glaring issue in the system without fixing it? Thats asking for trouble. At least now Sony has to get their system together. If it didn't happen now, it was going to somewhere down the line and Sony still would have done nothing about it until then. Great company.
what kind of stupid argument is that... that's like saying you support the 9/11 attacks because it highlighted apparantly not up to scratch airport security.
Two different things first of all, but it did awake the country to the problem. Now Sony is awake to its problem, it failed to protect its information on a massive scale. You don't fuck up more then that.

this what i feared the most, as society becomes more dependent on the internet the more vulnerable we become when it's been compromised.

well, good thing i buy Microsoft points in person instead of over the net with my credit card.

Hey, sorry to bother you with something really off-topic, but mind if I ask which anime your profile picture is from? Thanks.
Black Lagoon. :p

OT: Um, that is not the case at all, as several of my bros have pointed out. This is Phishing, not "Direct Access To Credit Card Info While In Game". :/

As you are a new contributer, I forgive you this time, but please do not make misleading titles like that in the future. :L

Thank joo. :p

Are you kidding me? Did you have a memory lapse or something where you entirely forgot the fact that you edited half of that post in afterwards? I quoted the entire post as it was when I first saw it too. Am I a jackass too?

Wow, there's sensationalist journalism and then there's this, I know The Escapists newsroom isn't the most reliable or trustworthy but wow - this is a whole new level of manipulating reality.

Icehearted said:
Almost seems like there's a full blown coordinated attack at work here. Maybe 'anon' could use it's super powers to find these turds and bring them before the people.
No, this is nothing of the sort, regardless of how much The Escapist is trying to push the angle of "hackers got your details" all the actual story is, is that Microsoft have issued a security warning regarding phishing attempts in Modern Warfare 2. They regularly put out these announcements once activities in games get to high.
Well, yeah, I knew that. i saw this story on two other websites already. i was playing along with how overblown things are... you know, melodrama for melodrama. Truth be told any reaction beyond commons sense precaution at this time seems premature. Still, it is fun watching this whole thing unfold, with politicians in at least two countries jumping in.

Pardon me for being a little amused by these thareics.

I can't help think this 'news report' is a fake. It isn't on the front page, there aren't any reliable sources, and the OP isn't a news contributor.

EDIT: It's permalinked. Hadn't noticed that.

The messages received are not 100% aligned with when posts are quoted. I assure you I quoted the entirety of your post and my points still stand. You can edit it all you want, it doesn't change that fact.

*sigh*
What the crap is going on? I never thought Microsoft would let a Phishing scam like this fly so far under their radar. This isn't anywhere on the scale of the PSN thing, but I think everyone needs to crack down a little in the security department.

Yes, yes you are.

Maybe you can request time stamps from the Escapist's servers because you care so much about something so trivial.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are also at a really boring office job, and normally something this stupid wouldn't garner your attention, and that you aren't normally some loser sitting in a forum hitting f5 to respond to every post that comes up as soon as it comes up.
Just as a note.. When you edit in some more information put in a quick marker saying 'Edit:' before the info. Just like that extra insult of a paragraph you added to the end of that post.
