Edit: I didn't even talk about how douchey the high level players of LoL are compared to any other game on this list. Even CoD players are more civil to each other than LoL players.
Figured I'd chime in and note levels in LoL don't really matter too much. They're more of an enforced learning period. ELO is what matters, and high ELO players tend to be a lot more civil and have a lot less trolls.
High ranking* players. For example, I'd say LiquidRet is a high level (high ranking) player in Starcraft 2.
Everyone that I know who plays LoL tells me how douchey the higher ranked players are. One friend of mine got disconnected from his game and when he went to rejoin, he wasn't able to play for 30 minutes because of some temporary ban on him because they reported him for dropping (or something along those lines).

I forget what thread I saw on these boards that supported my claim of LoL player doucheyness.
Uhh yea before you go spouting out that the high ranking players of league are all assholes you might want to look into it before someone like me comes along and points out that you're spouting bs.
If you leave a ranked game (even disconnecting)and the game ends you are temporarily suspended by the game. Your friend must have been gone a while because the game ended, and the system marked him as a "Leaver". It's there so people don't go around trolling others by joining games and screwing over their teammates from the ranking. And it is there as a punishment for rage quitters. It had absolutely nothing to do with anyone reporting him.

Second there are douchebags in every high level game, are you seriously saying the starcraft 2 high players are all angels? Hell you mentioned one notorious dick in your original post, IdrA

Even then while there are some jerks in LoL ranked, Riot actually does care what it's big streamers say, hell there have been cases where a high ranked streamer has trolled someone in game / said something foul during a strea and Riot went and suspended them for it.

WoW is a game played over periods of DAYS. LoL is a "get in play a few rounds get out" game.
That's the hell of it.
It has that "just one more game" appeal.
Then, you notice that one game lasts for an hour.
This is when you notice that you just played 6 games in a row.
That usually means the day is mostly over and you notice that you have done none of the productive things you wanted to do that day so far.

I would completely disagree actually and say that in terms of mechanics LOL is much more punishing than DOTA. The reason I say this is that not only is LOL designed to end much quicker which is why you have such heavy snowballing but the other factor is why the snowballing occurs which is that LOL is based on a gain only system.
Ironically, it's the reason they have a gain-only system that makes snowballing harder than in DOTA. Games are shorter because experience gains are jacked up for minions, and items pack more punch than in DOTA (well...they scale up more linearly. DOTA's end-game items scale up exponentially).

If a Hero/Champ gets a triple kill...
In LoL: They get 600 gold
In DOTA: They get 600 gold, and the enemy loses 600 gold.

No matter how you reason it, in DOTA the retaliating team is always playing further from behind. Gank bounties in LoL decrease exponentially the more you snowball. The bounty price floor in DOTA is much higher and decreases much more slowly (if at all. I'll need to check if it drops in DOTA2).

Compounding that:
In LoL: Minion waves are worth more Exp and gold than ganks. It's more profitable to zone an opponent and free-farm a minion wave than to gank them and miss the wave entirely.

In DOTA: Creep waves are worth a bit more gold than a gank (~300-350, varying), but ganks net you FAR more Experience. Two kills in DOTA is nearly a guaranteed level if you're within 2 levels of the victim. Two kills in LoL is maybe 1/3rd of a level in exp, and decreases rapidly (since the bonus exp is based on the difference in level; greater difference, less exp).
This has HUGE consequences for Snowballing potential (and retaliation), and has in fact lead to games where I've won at level 25 before the 20th minute mark (with the enemy topping level 9, I shit you not. No feeders or other intentional trolls. Just one sick game as runaway Viper.)

Zoning an opponent...
In LoL: Forces the enemy to teleport back to base
In DOTA: Forces the enemy to WALK back to base, and then (maybe) PAY to teleport back to lane.

Denying in DOTA means you have to pay attention to last-hitting both waves AND harassing.
Failing to Deny in lane means you WILL lose level advantage because Denies are worth bonus exp.
(and obviously, Denying doesn't exist in LoL)

Crowd Control in DOTA is unquestionably more powerful, for lacking the Tenacity mechanic alone, nevermind that stun and hard-CC durations are on average, much longer.
There aren't any champs in LoL who can conceivably stun-lock you (Faceless Void. Troll Warlord), or hex chain-you for over 10 seconds (Shadow Shaman. Demon Witch).

LoL plays more quickly because it's scaled that way, not because champs are more prone to snowballing (they CAN snowball as they can in either game, it's just that the effects are more pronounced in DOTA).

I sound like such a fucking fanboy when I say this (and I'm not. I like both games.), but I find DOTA to unquestionably be the more punishing game.

Whenever I see LoL games or any other MOBA, I can't help but think that almost all the heroes look like WC3 sprites; heroes from the ORIGINAL DotA. I played the shit out of that game, Magic Killing Illidan with Butterfly was so much fun zomg.
Heh. Yeah, stacked Anti-Mage is a total asshole. Well, except against certain melee monsters like Sven or Axe (who don't need a whole lot of mana to end you).

Mana-Burn + Crack-Speed = Blink-Murder EVERYONE.
Of course, I was the asshole who frequently ran around with Dagger, Sheepstick and Dagon on Antimage just because I wanted to hear someone snap their keyboard over their knee out of pure frustration (friend or foe, admittedly).
Probably why IceFrog nerfed Dagger of Escape (and made it the most ironically named item in the process, because it could only be used for travel and initiation after the nerf; and never escape).

This feels like tabloid journalism to me.

Take story.
Create sensationalist headline.
Ignore lot's of facts and factors.
Come to a conclusion that is most likely false due to point 3.

If this is only taking a portion of statistics, then it is not accurate, not with the current title of the article.

It should say "League of Legends topples World of Warcraft as most played game by Xfire members" or something similar. But no, that wouldn't make the headline catchy enough.

So like I said, tabloid journalism.

Random forum poster takes numbers from Xfire and makes a theory. Reaction:
OMG noob, everyone knows Xfire is hardly representative sample! OneEleven!

Same thing done by a "consulting company" and reprinted by Forbes. Reaction:
League of Legends has surely beaten Blizzards monster! Lets reprint this all over internet while ignoring the pathetic source of their numbers.

Bravo Escapist! You just reprinted a forum troll. /facepalm

If they put Xfire as source in title all would laugh at them up front. That would be really poor for misleading readers. Forum troll in tabloid disguise!

It'd be interesting to see where tf2 came on that list if they actually used numbers from Steam.

Bit late to the party? Xfire has shown LOL take over WOW like a half a year ago, and other sources also show same trends. Still nice to finalyl get an official recognision for what i was arleady talking about for a while.
What is more shocking in this is how popular minecraft is. Peopel say that gamers want everything on a platter and be hand-held. but its not true. sandbox works and minecrat is the best proof.

Lol, Xfire.

Oh yeah lets ignore the fact the name is completely misleading the content of the post and that D3 is already inherently screwed on numbers on this list because Blizzard stated that XFire or other overlay programs were causing crashes and recommended disabling them. Personally, I blame Korea. I know because I live there. The fact that Maple Story, a game that is totally unknown to those outside of that little peninsular, can make it to number seven says it all. They do like their online multi-players over there, I can tell you that for sure.

Thats funny that you think that IdrA is a dick at all times. I've heard him cast, seen him around other pros, and even heard other pros talk about him, and he seems like a really nice guy. IdrA has the real personality/gaming personality nailed down. He may seem like a massive dick, but he's really not.
Destiny on the other hand, is a dick and troll at all times. From streaming to casting to being around other pros, he's just a douche. Funny, but douchey.

And no, I am not saying that all high level players are angels in any game, I'm just saying that LoL has a very high frequency of them. Maybe not at the top of the totem pole (the guys that go to tournaments and such), but the guys that you see in the high ranked matches.

Wow, impressive.

It is also quite surprising to me that MapleStory is the 7th most played game. Wow.

I'm sorry you both feel that way. That said, the numbers do reflect <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114283-League-of-Legends-Muscles-Past-World-of-Warcraft>official LoL and Wow statistics. Also, even if Xfire isn't representative of all players, the fact that Xfire players did in six months what took the entire Halo franchise years to achieve is a very significant detail. I made sure to include both of these points in the article.

If you do have any figures that I'm not aware of, I'd be happy to discuss them with you.

too bad DotA is not counted in here, because I know that must be up there also. I would like to know if this company counted DotA. because in China alone there would be more than this amount.

Sadly, this was not a comment directed at you or even your company. More at the consulting company that produced it (DFC Intelligence). My apologies. :)

Although I have not seen that here so much, MMO forums are packed full of back and forth like this, only it's usually produced by posters. And the result of those debates over the years was always the same.

That is: Nobody could agree if the Xfire numbers represent a proper sampling method.
That is the same issue as you see with political polling, just amplified quite significantly, as Xfire is even less random than a phone book.

I'm afraid this consulting company purposefully disguised that detail, as the source of their numbers is quite low down in their text. Even most of those endless forum debates would have "based on Xfire" in the title.
